Volume of services up 0.9% in May

In May 2022, volume of services in Brazil increased by 0.9% from April, in the seasonally-adjusted series, resulting in a cumulative increase of 3.3% in the last four months. As a result, the sector is 8.4% above the February 2020 level (pre-pandemic) and 2.8% below that in November 2014 (peak of the time series).

In the non-adjusted series, against May 2021, volume of services had its 15th consecutive positive rate (9.2%). The cumulative ijndex in the year hit 9.4% against the same period in 2021. The cumulative index in the last 12 months went from 12.8% in April to 11.7% in May 2022, with deceleration for the second month in a row, since it had recorded 13.6% in March this year.

The increase of volume of services (0.9%), from April to May 2022 , was followed by all the five dissemination activities investigated, especially transportation (0.9%), which recovered part of the decrease (2.5%) of the previous month, and information and communication (0.9%), a sector that accounted for the third consecutive positive result, with a cumulative gain of 3.4%.

The other increases came from other services (3.1%); professional, administrative and complementary services (1.0%) and services rendered to families (1.9%). Whereas the first two subsectors doubled losses of April, -3.0% and -0.5%, respectively, the last activity registered the third positive result, with a cumulative increase of 8.1%.

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average (0.9%) in the quarter ended May 2022 against the previous month, has had positive results since July 2020. The following subsectors also recorded increases: services rendered to families 92.6%); information and communication (1.1%); professional, administrative and complementary services (0.8%); transportation (0.6%); and other services (0.5%).

In comparison with May 2021, the volume of the services sector, having increased 9.2% in May 2022, recorded the 15th positive rate in a row. This month’s result was marked by increase in four of the five dissemination activities and in 62.0% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (12.5%) and services rendered to familes (39.0%) accounted for the main positive contributions to volume of services, driven by the increase of revenue of companies innthe sectors of road transportation of cargo; air transportation of passengers; collective road transportation of passengers; maritime and port support navigation and mailing; in the first subsector and restaurants; hotels; catering services; and physical conditioning activities, in the last one.

Increases were also recorded by professional, administrative and complementary services (9.6%) and information and communication (4.0%), which recorded increments in revenue in: car rental; electronic pay services; engineering services; allocation of temporary workforce; organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions; and charging activities and cadastral information, in the former; and portals, content providers and other information services on the Internet; information technology consulting; development and licensing of software; data treatment, application service providers and Internat hosting; developemtn of computer programs on demand; other telecommunication activities; and cinema broadcast activities, in the latter.

On the other hand, the only negative rate in the month came from other services (-4.0%), mainly due to the revenue from recovery of plastic material; administration of stock markets and over-the-counter markets; insurance, social security and health insurance brokers; and support activities to agriculture.

As for the cumulative index in the first five months of 2022, against the same period a year ago, services increases by 9.4%, with positive rates in four of the five dissemination activities and an increase in 67.5% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, the most relevant positive contribution was that of transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (14.9%).

The other advances came from services rendered to families (37.8%); professional, administrative and complementary services (8.4%); and information and communication (3.4%).The sector of other services (-4.1%) recorded the only negative rate in terms of cumulative index in the year.

Services increase in 16 of the 27 federation Units in May

By area, 16 of the 27 Federation Units recorded increases in volume of services in May 2022 in comparison with the immediately previous month, following the increase observed at national level (0.9%). Among the areas that recorded positive increases in the month, the most important impacts came from São Paulo (0.6%) and Minas Gerais (3.3%), followed by Santa Catarina (3.3%), Mato Grosso do Sul (5.3%) and Amazonas (3.7%). On the other hand, Pernambuco (-3.1%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.2%), Mato Grosso (-1.7%) and Paraná (-0.4%) accounted for the main negative contributions in regional terms.

The main positive contribution came from São Paulo (11.1%), followed by Minas Gerais (15.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (14.8%), Ceará (24.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (2.4%). On the other hand, the Federal District (-4.3%) recorded the only negative result in the month.

Tourism activities recorded an increase of 2.6% in May

In May 2022,the index of tourism activities increased by 2.6% from the previous month, third consecutive positive result in a row, with a cumulative increase of 11.7% in the period. the index of tourism activities increased by 2.6% from the previous month, third consecutive positive result in a row, with a cumulative increase of 11.7% in the period.

Only four of the 12 areas surveyed recorded increases as observed in the national tourism activity (2.6%). The most relevant contribution was that of São Paulo (2.5%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (3.9%), Bahia (1.5%) and Ceará (2.3%). On the contrary, Rio de Janeiro (-2.8%), Goiás (-9.6%), Paraná (-4.4%) and Santa Catarina (-4.8%) recorded the main decreases in regional terms.

In the May 2022/May 2021 comparison, the volume of tourism activities in Brazil increased by 45.6%, 14th positive rate in a row, mainly due to the increase in the revenue of comoanies working in hte segments of air transportation; restaurants; hotels; car rental; collective road transportation of passengers; catering services; travel agencies.

All the 12 Federation Units where the indicator is surveyed recorded increases in tourism services, with a highlight to São Paulo (50.5%), followed by Minas Gerais (80.1%), Rio de Janeiro (24.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (58.7%) and Bahia (45.8%).

In the cumulative indicator in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities increased 50.2% against the same period in 2021, mainly due to the increases in revenue of companies in the segments of air transportation of passengers; restaurants; hotels; car rental; collective road transportation of passengers and catering services.

All the 12 areas surveyed also recorded positive rates, being the main highlights the increases in: São Paulo (56.7%), followed by Minas Gerais (82.1%), Rio de Janeiro (27.9%), Bahia (47.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (68.0%).

Transportation of passengers changes by -0.3% and cargo transportation increases by 1.8%

InMay 2022, the volume of transportation of passengers in Brazil recorded a negative change of 0.3% against the previous month, in the seasonally-adjusted series, after a cumulative growth of 27.2% between November 2021 and April 2022. This way, the segment is, this month, 0.4% below the level of February 2020, prior to the pandemic and 22.0% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).

Volume of cargo transportation, in its turn, recorded an increase of 1.9% in May 2022, with a cumulative increase of 13.0% since October 2021. This way, the segment hit a new record, peak of its time series this month. In comparison with the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 25.9% above that of February 2020.

Against the same month in 2021, without seasonal adjustment, transportation of passengers recorded the 14th consectutive positive rate (42.6%), whereas cargo transportation increased 13.7%, its 21st consecutive positive result.

In terms of the cumulative index in the year, transportation of passengers increased 51.3% against the same period in 2021, whereas cargo transportation increased 12.4% in the same interval investigated.
