In the positive change of 0.1% in industrial production in April, in the seasonally-adjusted series, eight of the 15 areas surveyed showed positive rates. Rio de Janeiro (5.9%), Santa Catarina (3.3%) and Bahia (3.0%) had the highest increases, with Rio intensifying the positive result recorded last March (2.3%); SC eliminated the 3.5% drop seen in the previous month; and Bahia marked the third consecutive month of growth in production, accumulating a gain of 5.2% in this period.

Pernambuco (2.0%), Pará (1.9%), Northeast Region (1.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.5%) also recorded increases above the national average (0.1%), with Amazonas (0.1%) completing the set of places with positive indices in April.

On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-4.7%), Paraná (-4.3%) and São Paulo (-2.8%) had the highest declines this month. Mato Grosso eliminated the 2.8% expansion registered in March; while Paraná and São Paulo interrupted two consecutive months of growth in production, a period in which they accumulated gains of 1.8% and 5.1%, respectively. Ceará (-1.5%), Espírito Santo (-0.6%), Minas Gerais (-0.6%) and Goiás (-0.5%) had the other negative rates in April.

The quarterly moving average index for industry grew by 0.5% in the quarter ended in April compared to the previous month's level, after registering a negative change of 0.2% in last March, when it interrupted the upward trend that started in November 2021.

Eleven of the 15 areas surveyed showed positive rates in this month, with a highlight to the sharper advances in Pará (6.3%), Minas Gerais (3.3%), Pernambuco (3.2%), Amazonas (3.2 %), Ceará (2.7%), Rio de Janeiro (2.7%) and Northeast Region (2.5%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-2.2%) and Espírito Santo (-1.5%) recorded the main declines in April 2022.

This month, Espírito Santo (-7.3%), Paraná (-6.6%) and Santa Catarina (-5.6%) had the most intense reductions.

The drop in Espírito Santo was mainly driven by the negative behavior of mining and quarrying, basic metals and non-metallic mineral products. In Paraná, the decrease was driven by  food products; motor vehicles, trailers and bodies; and machinery and equipment. In Santa Catarina, the fall was mainly due to the sectors of textiles and electrical machinery, appliances and materials.

Pará (-3.5%) and Goiás (-2.2%) also registered more intense negative rates than the national average (-0.5%), while São Paulo (-0.5%) and Minas Gerais ( -0.4%) completed the set of locations with negative indices this month.

On the other hand, Bahia (22.0%), Mato Grosso (15.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (14.4%) showed double-digit advances and the most intense ones in April 2022. The growth in Bahia was largely driven by the positive behavior of the coke, petroleum products and biofuels activities. In Mato Grosso, food products, coke, petroleum products and biofuels and beverages collaborated to the result. In Rio de Janeiro, the highlight goes to the coke, petroleum products and biofuels; mining and quarrying industries; and pharmaceuticals.

In the cumulative index of the year, compared to the same period in 2021, there was a reduction in production in 11 of the 15 surveyed locations, especially Pará (-10.2%), Ceará (-9.0%) and Santa Catarina (-8, 1%).
