In February, industry records increase in 11 of the 15 areas surveyed

With an increase of 0.7% in national industry in February, in the seasonally adjusted series, 11 of the 15 areas surveyed by the IBGE recorded positive rates.

The most significant increases, and, with two digit, were those in Pará (23.9%) and Pernambuco (10.2%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso, with a decrease of 4.4%, recorded the most significant decrease in the month, followed by Rio de Janeiro (-0.5%) and Espírito Santo (-0.4%), whereas Rio Grande do Sul (0.0%) had null change.

The quarterly moving average with an increase of 0.4%,was positive in 10 of the 15 areas, led by Espírito Santo (2.4%), Bahia (2.1%), Amazonas (1.6%), Goiás (1.4%), Northeast Region (1.1%), Pará (0.7%) and São Paulo (0.7%).

In the cumulative index in the year, there were decreases in nine of the 15 areas surveyed, among which Ceará (-20.1%) and Pará (-14.5%) stood out. The cumulative rate in the last 12 months advanced in nine of 15 areas surveyed.

Considering the advance of 0.7% in industrial activity in February, in the seasonally adjusted series, 11 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive rates. Pará (23.9%) and Pernambuco (10.2%) recorded two-digit increases and the most significant ones, with increasing results again after decreases last January and in December 2021, a period when there were cumulative losses of 17.6% and 7.6%, respectively. Amazonas (7.8%), Minas Gerais (7.3%), Ceará (6.0%), Northeast Region (5.1%), Bahia (3.4%), Goiás (1.4%), Paraná (1.3%), Santa Catarina (1.1%) and São Paulo (1.1%) completed the group of areas with positive indexes in February.

On the other hand, Mato Grosso, with a decrease of 4.4%, accounted for the most significant decrease and interrupted four consecutive months of output increase, with a cumulative 32.8%. Rio de Janeiro (-0.5%) and Espírito Santo (-0.4%) recorded other negative rates in February 2022; whereas Rio Grande do Sul (0.0%) had null change.

Thequarterly moving average index for industry recorded an increase of 0.4% in the quarter ended February against the level in the previous month, after an increase of 0.2% last January and 0.7%in December 2021, when the index interrupted a downward trend observed since January 2021. In regional terms, 10 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive rates this month, with a highlight to Espírito Santo (2.4%), Bahia (2.1%), Amazonas (1.6%), Goiás (1.4%), Northeast Region (1.1%), Pará (0.7%) and São Paulo (0.7%). On the other hand, Ceará (-1.6%), Mato Grosso (-0.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.3%) recorded decreases.

Compared with the November 2021, the national industry fell by 4.4% in November 2021, with ten out of 15 areas surveyed reporting negative rates. It is worth mentioning that February 2022 (19 days) had one business day more than in the same month a year ago (18). Ceará (-14.7%) had a two digit decrease and the most significant, mainly due to the negative behavior of leather articles for travel, and footwear; manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories; and electric machinery amd electric material.

Santa Catarina (-6.6%) and São Paulo (-5.4%) also recorded more significant negative rates than the national average (-4.3%), whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-3.3%), Northeast Region (-2.6%), Pernambuco (-1.5%), Pará (-1.4%) and Paraná (-0.9%) complete the group of areas with negative indexes this month.
On the other hand, Mato Grosso (12.6%) and Amazonas (11.3%) recorded the most significant decreases in February 2022, influenced by the positive performance of food products in the former; and of beverages and other transportation equipment, in the latter. Bahia (4.4%), Goiás (3.4%), Espírito Santo (1.6%), Rio de Janeiro (1.4%) and Minas Gerais (0.7%) accounted for the other positive results this month.

In the cumulative index in the year, against the same period a year ago, the drop in national output reached nine of the 15 areas surveyed, mainly in Ceará (-20.1%) and Paraná (-14.5%). Ceará was affected by the drops in leather articles, Travel articles and footwear; manufacture of apparel and accessories; electric machinery, appliances and equipment; and coke, petroleum products and biofuels. Whereas Pará was affected by the sector of mining and quarrying industry, Santa Catarina (-8.0%), São Paulo (-7.3%), Pernambuco (-7.1%) and Northeast Region (-6.2%) also recorded negative rates below the national average (-5.8%), whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-4.8%), Minas Gerais (-4.4%) and Paraná (-2.7%) completed the group of areas with a decrease in the cumulative index in the year.

On the other hand, Mato Grosso (26.5%) accounted for the most significant increase in the cumulative index in the first two months of 2022, mainly due to the positive performance of food products and coke, petroleum products and biofuels. Espírito Santo (3.6%), Amazonas (3.4%), Goiás (2.6%), Rio de Janeiro (2.1%) and Bahia (1.5%) accounted for the other positive rates in terms of the cumulative index in the year.

The cumulative index in 12 months having increased 2.8% in February 2022, remains on a downward trend as observed since August 2021 (7.2%). Nine of the 15 areas surveyed recorded increases, but six of them had lower dynamism against the indexes of last January. Santa Catarina (from 8.5% to 7.3%), Ceará (from 0.4% to -0.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 7.4% to 6.5%) and São Paulo (from 3.8% to 3.0%) accounted for the main losses; whereas Bahia (from -11.9% to -9.9%), Amazonas (from 7.0% to 8.9%), Mato Grosso (from 3.9% to 5.2%), Espírito Santo (from 5.4% to 6.5%) and Pará (from -6.8% to -6.1%) recorded increases.
