In November, retail sales increased by 0.6%

In November 2021, volume of sales of retail trade in the country increased 0.6%, in the seasonally adjusted series, after an increase of 0.2% in October. The quarterly moving average changed by -0.1% in the quarter ended November, after a decrease of 1.6% in the quarter ended October. In the unadjusted series, retail trade recorded a decrease of 4.2% against November 2020, fourth negative rate in a row. The cumulative index in the yearincreased 1.9%. The cumulative index in the last 12 months, having changed from 2.6% in October to 1.9% in November, indicates deceleration in sales.

In extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, volume of sales increased 0.5% from October, after three consecutive months recording decrease (-3.1% in August, -0.9% in September and -0,8% em outubro). As a result, the quarterly moving average ended November (-0.4%) was leveled off against to that of the quarter ended October (-1.6%).

Five of the eight activities recorded negative rates, in the seasonally adjusted series

There was an increase of 0.6% in volume of sales in November, in the seasonally adjusted series, but five of the eight activities recorded negative rates: furniture and household appliances (-2.3%), fabric, apparel and footwear (-1.9%), fuels and lubricants (-1.4%), books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-1.4%) and office, computer and communication material and equipment (-0.1%).

On the other hand, Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.9%), Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (1.2%) and other personal and household articles (2.2%) recorded increases.

In extended retail trade, the increase of 0.5% in volume of sales, in November, was influenced by vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (0.7%) and construction material (0.8%), after the negative results of the previous month, -0.4% and -0.8%, respectively.

Seven of the eight retail activities recorded decrease in relation to November 2020

In comparison with November 2020, retail trade recorded a decrease of 4.2%, with negative rates in seven of the eight activities. With the biggest impact (-2.8 p.p), the segment of  furniture and household appliances recorded a decrease of 21.5% in volume of sales against November 2020. The sector recorded six months of consecutive negative results in the interannual comparison. In the year, the activity had a cumulative change of -5.7%, third consecutive month with negative results. The last twelve months recorded the second negative rate (-0.7% in October and -4.8% in November), after 24 months recording positive results.

Fuels and lubricants fell 7.1%, third consecutive decrease (-4.2% in September and -7.6% in October), after five positive rates in a row. The price rise of fuels, above the average change of prices, was the relevant factor that has been influencing negatively the performance of this sector. The cumulative index in the last twelve months shows stability against the previous month (0.2% in both). In the year, deceleration was intensified: 2.9% up to September, 1.7% up to October and 0.9% up to November 2021.

In the segment of Other personal and household objects, which encompasses department stores, glasses shops, sporting goods stores, toy stores, etc., the decrease of 2.6% in the interannual indicator in volume of sales against November 2020 was lower than in October (-7.2%). The result of the cumulative index in the year, up to November (an increase of 15.4%) is the lowest since the result of January-April 2021 (27.7%). The cumulative indicator in the last 12 months increased 13.7%%, with a loss of 2.2 p.p. in relation to the October figure (15.9%).

Fabric, apparel and footwear fell 4.4% from November 2020, second consecutive decrease after eight positive changes in a row. As for the cumulative index in the year, with a change from 20.4% in October to  16.9% in November, the sector shows deceleration. The cumulative index in 12  months, in turn. remained high for the third consecutive month: 11.8% in September and 11.9% in October and November.

The sector of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco , recorded a decrease of -0.5% from October 2020, and accounted for the ninth negative rate in a row in this comparison. The cumulative index in the last 12 months, having recorded -2.3% in November, kept its pace in relation to October (-2.4%). 

The segment of Office, computer and communication material and equipment fell 11.0% from October 2020, fourth consecutive result and seventh in the year of 2021. The cumulative indicator in the last 12 months (decrease of 3.2%) kept the pace of decrease in sales against September (decrease of 3.3%).

The activity ofBooks, newspapers, magazines and stationery decreased by 7.9% against October 2020, second consecutive decrease, after -3.5% in September. The cumulative index in the year went from -18.5% in October to -18.1% in November, with 22 months of decrease of negative rates in a row. The cumulative index in the last 12 months kept, in November, the same figure as in October: -21.2% and has been negative since March 2014 (-0.2%).

Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries was the only segment to record increase in sales against November 2020: 2.5%. That took place after a change of -0.2% in October against the same month in 2020. In terms of the cumulative index in the year (10.0%), the sector decelerated against October (10.9%), which is also observed in the cumulative index in the year, with a change from 11.2% until October to 10.4% up to November.

In extended retail trade, the sector of , o setor de Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded an increase of 1.7% against November 2020, after a decrease of 4.0% in October. However, the cumulative index in the year (16.6%), still presents deceleration of increase from October (18.4%). In the last 12 months, this activity had a cumulative increase of 15.1%, same level as in October (15.1%).

The decrease of -4.1%from November 2020 represents the fifth consecutive rate in the segment of Construction Material. In 2021, the sector has a cumulative index of 5.6%, lowest increase in the year. As a result, the cumulative index in 12 months, having changed from 8.5% in October to 6.6% in November, has been on a downward trend since June 2021.

Sales fell in 14 Federation Units against October 2021

From October to November, in the seasonally adjusted series, sales in retail trade grew 0.6%, with negative results in 14 dof the 27 Federation Units. The most significant decreases were those of Paraíba (-3.1%), Piauí (-3.0%) and Bahia (-2.8%) Among the 13 Federation Units, the main ones were those of Roraima (3.7%), Rio de Janeiro (2.8%) and Federal District (2.7%).

In the same comparison, extended retail trade recorded an increase of 0.5%. In 14 of the 27 UFs, rates were negative, and the main ones were those of Paraíba (-6.8%), Tocantins (-6.1%) and Alagoas (-5.1%). In five Federation Units recorded increase, with a highlight to Rio de Janeiro (2.1%), Amazonas (1.9%) and Rondônia (1.7%). Amapá was leveled off (0.0%).

Against November 2020, retail trade fell 4.2%, with negative results in 23 FUs, mainly in Sergipe (-14.9%), Bahia (-13.8%) and Maranhão (-11.7%). Espírito Santo (3.3%), Roraima (3.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.4%) recorded the main increases.

In extended retail trade, from November 2020, ther was a decrease of 2.9%, with negative figures in 19 Federation Units. With negative results, Acre (-10.0%), Paraíba (-8.6%) and Maranhão (-8.5%) stood out. Among the 8 FUs with p Pernambuco (9.3%), Roraima (6.2%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (4.9%).
