In October, industry shrinks in 5 of the 15 areas surveyed

With a decrease of 0.6% of national industry in October, in the seasonally adjusted series, five of the 15 areas surveyed by the IBGE recorded negative rates.

Santa Catarina (-47%), Pará (-42%) and Minas Gerais (-3.9) accounted for the main losses. São Paulo (-3.1%) and Espírito Santo (-1.0%) are other areas with negative results. The Northeast (5.1%), Mato Grosso (4.8%) and Ceará (4.1%) accounted for the main increases.

In relation to the quarterly moving average, eight of the fifteen areas surveyed in the quarter ended October recorded negative rates, with a highlight to Minas Gerais (-2.0%), São Paulo (-1.7%), Santa Catarina (-1.4%) and Goiás (-1.0%).

The cumulative index in the year was positive in ten of the 15 areas surveyed, with a highlight to Santa Catarina (13.8%), Minas Gerais (12.0%) and Paraná (11.2%). As for the cumulative index in 12 months, ten of the 15 areas surveyed also had positive rates in October 2021.

Regarding the decrease of 0.6% of industrial activity in October, in the seasonally adjusted series, five of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative changes. Santa Catarina (-4.7%), Pará (-4.2%) and Minas Gerais (-3.9%) recorded the most significant decreases. Santa Catarina and Pará, had worse decreases of, respectively, 1.4% and 1.1% recorded in September; and Minas Gerais had the fifth month of production decrease in a row, a period with a cumulative decrease of 10.1%. São Paulo (-3.1%) and Espírito Santo (-1.0%) complete the group of areas with negative results in October 2021.

On the other hand, the Northeast Region (5.1%), Mato Grosso (4.8%) and Ceará (4,1%) recorded the biggest increases. The Northeast repeated the increase as observed in September; Mato Grosso and Ceará made up, respectively, for part of the drops of 5.5% and 4.6% cumulative in the period August-September 2021. Rio Grande do Sul (2.7%), Bahia (2.7%), Pernambuco (1.6%), Paraná (0.6%), Amazonas (0.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.1%) accounted for the other positive rates in October 2021; whereas Goiás, with a null change (0.0%), remained at the same level as in September.

The quarterly moving average index for the overall industry dropped 0.7% the quarter ended October against the previous month and has remained on a downward trend since January 2021. Eight of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative rates, with a highlight to the significant decreases in Minas Gerais (-2.0%), São Paulo (-1.7%), Santa Catarina (-1.4%) and Goiás (-1.4%). In turn, Rio Grande do Sul (1.7%), Bahia (1.0%) and Amazonas (1.0%) recorded the main increased in October 2021.

Compared with the same month in 2020, national industry fell by 7.8% in ctober 2021, with 13 out of the 15 areas surveyed reporting negative rates. It is worth mentioning that October 2021 (22 days) had one business day less than the same month in the previous year (21). Pará (-14.2%), Santa Catarina (-12.5%), São Paulo (-12.3%) and Amazonas (-11.9%) recorded the most significant drops.

Pará was mainly affected by the negative performance of the mining and quarrying sectors. Santa Catarina was affected by decreases in the sectors of electric machines, apliances and equipment, manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories and food products. São Paulo fell due to the decrease in the sectors of food products, motor vehicles, trunks and trailers and pharaceuticals; and Amazonas, due to the decrease in the production of computer, electronic and optical equipment, and beverages.

Bahia (-10.3%), Ceará (-9.8%) and Northeast Region (-9.0%) also recorded negative rates below the national average (-7.8%), whereas Pernambuco (-6.9%), Goiás (-6.6%), Mato Grosso (-5.3%), Paraná (-4.9%), Minas Gerais (-4.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-2,2%) complete the group of areas with negative results this month.

Rio de Janeiro (6.6%) and Espírito Santo (6.1%) recorded increases in October 2021, mainly due to the increases recorded by coke, petroleum products and biofuels, in the former; and pulp, paper and paper products, in the latter.

In the cumulative index in the year against the same period a year ago, the drop in the national output reached ten of the 15 areas surveyed, mainly in Santa Catarina (13.8%), Minas Gerais (12.0) and Paraná (11.2%). Rio Grande do Sul (11.0%), Espírito Santo .(9.6%), Amazonas (9.4%), Ceará (8.9%) and São Paulo (7.2%) also recorded positive rates above the national average (5.7%), whereas Rio de Janeiro (3.8%) and Pernambuco (0.7%) complete the group of areas with increase in production considering the cumulative index in the year. On the other hand, Bahia (-13.1%) recorded the most significant decrease in the cumulative index in the first ten months in the year. Mato Grosso (-5.2%), Northeast Region (-5.0%), Goiás (-4.7%) and Pará (-3.7%) recorded the other negative decreases in the cumulative indicator in the period January-October.

The cumulative index in the last twelve months having increased by 5.7% in October 2021, reduced the pace of increase against the results of September (6.5%) and August (7.2%). Ten of the 15 areas surveyed registered positive rates, but 11 with less dynamism against the September indexes. Santa Catarina (from 16.1% to 13.9%), Amazonas (from 11.4% to 9.4%), Pará (from -1.4% to -3.2%), Ceará (from 11.2% to 9.4%), Pernambuco (from 3.9% to 2.3%), São Paulo (from 8.7% to 7.3%), Paraná (from 13.0% to 12.0%) and Northeast Region (from -2.5% to -3.4%) recorded the main decreases between September and October 2021. Espírito Santo (from 6.6% to 7.9%), Rio de Janeiro (from 0.9% to 2.0%), Mato Grosso (from -6.7% to -6.1%) and Goiás (from -4.7% to -4.5%) recorded increased between the two periods.
