Retail sales change by -0.1% in October

In October 2021, national retail trade changed by -0.1% againts September, in the seasonally-adjusted series. The quarterly moving average decreased 1.8% in the quarter ended October.

In the seasonally-adjusted series, retail trade fell 7.1% from October 2020. The cumulative index in the year stayed at 2.6% and the cumulative index in 12 months, at the same rate.

In extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, volume of sales retreated 0.9% in relation to September. The moving average of the quarter ended September was of -1.7%. Against October 2020, there was a decrease of 7.1%. In the year, extended retail grew by 6.3% and, in 12 months, sales rose 5.7%.

Volume of retail sales, from September to October, recorded thier third negative rate in a row. This result was observed in five of the eight activities surveyed. Inflation still has an impact on indicators, since the change in nominal revenue of retail sales was positive, from September to October (0.7%). Fuels and lubricants and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco are the activites that account for the main impacts..

In October, five of the eight activities recorded negative changes

In the seasonally-adjusted series, from September to October 2021, five of the eight activities recorded negative rates: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-1.1%), Furniture and household appliances (-0.5%), Fuels and lubricants (-0.3%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.3%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (-0.1%). Three activities recorded increase: Fabric, apparel and footwear (0.6%), Other personal and domestic articles (1.4%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment(5.6%).

Considering extended retail trade, in October, volume of sales of sectors recorded negative changes: Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded -0.5% and Construction material-0.9%, both, respectively, after a decrease of 1.7% and 1.0% recorded in the previous month.

The cumulative index in 12 months reached 2.6% in October, pointing to a decrease in the pace of sales.

In comparison with the same months a year ago, in the seasonally adjusted series, the decrease of 7.1% reached the eight activities surveyed: Furniture and household appliances (-22.1%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-11.0%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-7.9%), Fuels and lubricants (-7.7%), Other personal and domestic articles (-7.2%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-5.6%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (-2.0%) and Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (-0.2%).

All the eight retail activities retreated in comparison with October 2020

Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco recorded a decrease of 5.6% from October 2020, and accounted for the ninth negative rate in a row in this comparison. The segment accounted for the main impact, with negative results, on the overall retail trade rate, with a share of -2.8 p.p out of a total -7.1%. The cumulative index in the year was -3.2%, 0.3 p.p below the result of September (-2.9%). Having recorded -2.4% in October, the cumulative indicator in the last 12 months was marked by bigger deceleration in relation to September (-1.4%).

Volume of sales of Furniture and household appliances fell 2.1% from October 2020. The sector recorded negative results for five months in a row in the comparison between years, having accounted for the second biggest contribution to the rate composition of retail, with -2.4 p.p out of -7.1%. In the year, the activity had a cumulative change of -3.4%, second consecutive year with negative results of this indicator. In the last 12 months, the month of October is the first one with a negative result (-0.6%) since August 2019.

The segment of Other personal and domestic articles, which gathers department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores, toy stores, etc., recorded a decrease of 7.2% in volume of sales in relation to October 2020, with a decrease of pace in relation to September (-6.7%), accounting for the third biggest contribution to retail (-1.0 p.p.). The cumulative index in the year, up to October (an increase of 18.3%) is the lowest since March 2021 (12.9%). The cumulative index in the last 12 months was 15.9%, with a decrease of 2.6 p.p innrelation to September (18.5%).

The sector of Fuels and lubricants, with a decrease of 7.7% in volume of sales in relation to October, repeated its negative result for the second month in a row (-4.2% in September 2021), after five months of rates with positive results. The price rise of fuels, above the average change of prices, was the relevant factor that has been influencing negatively the performance of this sector. As a result, the annualized indicator, cumulative index in the last 12 months, shows an intensive loss of pace (0.2%) against the previous month (0.4%). In the cumulative index in the year, the same took place: decreases of 2.9% and 1.7% up to September and October, respectively.

Office, computer and communication material and equipment fell 11.0% from October 2020, fourth consecutive result and seventh in the year of 2021. In the cumulative indicator in the year, the sector recorded the first negative rate (-1.0%) in seven months. The cumulative indicator in the last 12 months (decrease of 3.2%) kept the pace of decrease in sales against September (a decrease of 3.3%).

The sector of Fabric, apparel and footwear, in turn, recorded a decrease of 2.0% from October 2020, first negative rate in this type of comparison, after eight positive rates in a row. As for the cumulative index in the year up to the month of reference, having changed from 24.1% in September and to 20.4% in October, also with deceleration. The cumulative index in the last 12 months, in turn, was almost leveled off, with 11.8% in September and 11.9% in October.

The activity Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries recorded a decrease of 0.2% in sales against October 2020, having interrupted a series of 16 positive rates in a row. In nrelation to the cumulative index in the year, with a change from 12.2% up to September to 10.9% in the month of reference, the sector also recorded deceleration of increase, which is also observed in the last 12 months, having changed from 12.5% up to September to 11.2% in October.

Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery decreased by 7.9% against October 2020, second consecutive decrease (-3.5% in September). The cumulative indicator in the year changed from -19.4% up to September to -18.5% up to October, having recorded 21 negative rates in a row. The annualized rate, cumulative in the last 12 months, was of -21.2% and has remained negative since March 2014 (-0.2%)..

Considering extended retail trade, the sector of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded a decrease of 4.0% against October 2020, having recorded its first decrease after seven months of increases. The cumulative indicator in the year up to October, an increase of 18.4%, showing a loss of pace compared with September (21.5%). In the last 12 months, the activity has a cumulative increase of 15.1%, 0.3 p.p above the result of September (an increase of 14.8%).

The decrease of 13.7% in October 2021 against October 2020 represents the fourth consecutive rate in the segment of Construction Material in this comparison. In 2021, the cumulative index is 6.8%, lowest increase in the year. As a result, the cumulative index in 12 months, having changed from 12.0% in September to 8.6% in October, has been on a downward trend since June 2021.

In October, volume of sales increases in 17 of the 27 Federation Units

From September 2021 and October 2021, in the seasonally adjusted series, the national average rate of retail trade sales was of -0.1%, with negative figures prevailing in 17 out of 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to: Acre (3.0%), Alagoas (2.4%) and Rondônia (2.4%). On the other hand, 10 Federation Units had negative results: Amapá (-2.8%), Roraima (-2.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%).

In the same comparison for the extended retail trade, the change between September and October was of -0.9%, with a predominance of negative results in 17 of the 27 Federation Units, especially in: Rio de Janeiro (-5.0%), Amapá (-4.0%) and Goiás (-3.8%). On the other hand, 10 of 27 Federation Units accounted for positive results, with a highlight to: Tocantins (8.1%) and Alagoas (4.4%) Rio Grande do Sul (2.2%). Bahia was leveled off (0.0%).

Compared with October 2020, the change in the sales of the national retail trade was of -7.1%, with a predominance of 26 in 27 Federation Units, mainly: Bahia (-14.1%), Sergipe (-12.6%) and Paraíba (-12.2%). On the other hand, accounting for a positive result, is Rio Grande do Sul (0.4%). Concerning the share in the composition of retail trade, the highlights, with negative results, were: São Paulo (-5.9%); Rio de Janeiro (-11.8%); and Minas Gerais (-7.1%).

Considering extended retail trade, against October 2020, there was a decrease of 7.1%, with a majority of negative results in 23 of the 27 Federation Units, mainly: Amapá (-14.9%), Amazonas (-12.4%) and Paraná (-11.7%). On the other hand, four out of 27 Federation Units recorded positive figures, among which stand out: Pará (1.1%), Tocantins (2.2%) and Pernambuco (9.4%). Concerning the share in the composition of extended retail trade, the highlights are: São Paulo (-10.8%), Rio de Janeiro (-11.6%) and Paraná (-11.7%).
