In July, retail sales grow 1.2%

In July 2021, the sales volume of the national retail trade increased 1.2%, over June, in the seasonally adjusted series. It was the fourth consecutive growth of this indicator making the sales volume of Trade reach the record level of the time series of the PMC, started in 2000. The quarterly moving average grew 1.1% compared to the quarter ended in June (2.2%). In the seasonally-adjusted series, the retail trade increased 5.7% compared to July 2020, the fifth consecutive positive rate. The cumulative index in the year reached 6.6% and the cumulative index in the last 12 months remained at 5.9%.

In the extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, the sales volume increased 1.1% in relation to June 2021.

The moving average stood at 0.7%, below the moving average of June (1.6%).

The cumulative index over the year went to 11.4% and the cumulative index in 12 months, 8.4%.

Five of the eight activities advanced, in the seasonally adjusted series 

The 1.2% increase in the volume of retail sales in July 2021, in the seasonally adjusted series, was followed by positive rates in five of the eight activities, with a highlight to: Other personal and household articles (19, 1%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (2.8%), Office, computer and communication equipment and materials (0.6%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.2%) and Pharmaceutical, medical,  orthopedical articles, toiletries and cosmetics (0.1%).

On the other hand, the activities that had a decrease in the volume of sales from June to July were: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-5.2%), Furniture and household appliances (-1.4%) and Fuels and lubricants (- 0.3%).

In extended retail trade, the activity of Motor vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded a change of 0.2% between June and July, while Construction material dropped -2.3%, both, respectively, after a change of -0.1% and a drop of 3.7% registered in the previous month.

Four of the eight retail activities had positive rates compared to July 2020

In comparison with July 2020, retail trade grew 5.7%, with positive rates in four of the eight activities. The highs were in Fabric, apparel and footwear (42.0%), Other personal and household articles (36.8%), Fuels and lubricants (6.4%) and Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (4.8%). There were decreases in Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-23.2%), Furniture and household appliances (-12.0%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-5.6%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco (-1.8%).

The Extended retail trade grew 7.1% compared to July 2020. Sales of Motor vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces rose 18.0% and Construction Material sales dropped 4.7%.

The Fabric, apparel and footwear sector registered an increase of 42.0% compared to July 2020, the fourth positive rate in this comparison. The activity accounted for the second major positive impact on the formation of the overall retail rate. As a result, the cumulative index in the year changed from 32.5% in June to 34.2% in July, while the cumulative index in the last 12 months changed from 3.9% in June to 10.3% in July, the second positive rate for that indicator.

The segment of Other personal and household articles, which includes department stores, opticians, jewelry, sporting goods, toy stores, etc., had a 36.8% increase compared to July 2020, above the result of June (22.7%). It was the biggest positive contribution to the overall result of retail (4.7 pp of 5.7% in total). The cumulative index in the year (32.5%), compared to June (31.5%), showed an increase in pace. The cumulative index in the last 12 months registered an increase of 23.0%, a gain of 2.3 pp in relation to June (20.7%).

The Fuels and Lubricants sector, with an increase of 6.4% compared to July 2020, had its fourth consecutive month of positive rates for the interannual indicator. As a result, in the year, from +4.0% up to June to +4.3% up to July, the activity shows acceleration in the pace of sales. In the cuulative result for the last 12 months, there was a reduction in the loss of pace, from -2.1% in June to -0.6% in July.

The activity of Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles increased 4.8% compared to July 2020, the fourteenth consecutive positive change , compared to the same month of the previous year. In the cumulative result for the year, it increased from 16.2% until June to 14.4% until July. The cumulative index in the last 12 months increased from 14.4% until June to 13.6% in July.

The activity of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery fell 23.2% compared to July 2020, the first negative one after three months of increase for this indicator. The cumulative index in the year went from -22.8% until June to -22.9% until July, keeping the same pace, same movement of the cumulative figure in the last 12 months, which changed from -28.3% until June to -28.2 % until July.

The Furniture and Household Appliances segment decreased 12.0% compared to July 2020, the second negative rate after four months of positive rates. The cumulative index in the year went from 11.0% until June to 6.8% until July, showing a decrease in the pace of sales. The cumulative ndex in the last 12 months (12.7%) was below the cumulative index until June (16.3%).

The segment of office, computer and communication material and equipment had a drop of 5.6% compared to July 2020. In the cumulative result for the year, there was an increase of 4.1% up to July, below that registered up to June (5.9% %). The cumulative index in the last 12 months (-3.0%) had the same rate of decline in relation to June (-3.0%).

The sector of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with a decrease of 1.8% compared to July 2020, registered the sixth consecutive negative rate in this comparison, with a decrease in the loss of pace compared to the result of June (- 3.0%). The segment was the second that contributed the most, in the negative arena, to the indicator: -0.9 pp. The cumulative index in the year changed little in the last three months (-2.7%, -2.7% and -2.6% , in May, June and July, respectively). In the cumulative index in the last 12 months, registering a change of -0.1% in July, it showed a decrease in the intensity of growth in relation to June (0.8%).

In the extended retail, the sector of Motor vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, registering an increase of 18.0% compared to July 2020, recorded the fifth consecutive positive rate, exerting the greatest positive contribution to the result in the month for the extended retail. The cumulative index in the year increased by 25.9%, showing a gain in pace, compared to the month of June (27.5%). The cumulative index in the last 12 months, having registered until July, 11.7%, shows growth in the sales pace for the third consecutive month.

With a 4.7% drop compared to July 2020, the Construction Material segment had the first rate in the negative field after thirteen months, in this comparison. Thus, the cumulative indicator in the year up to July (16.6%) shows a decrease in the pace of sales when compared to the month of June (21.5%). The cumulative index in the last 12 months, changing from 22.0% in June to 19.1% in July, also signals less intensity in the positive field.

Sales grow in 19 Federation Units compared to June

From June to July 2021, in the seasonally adjusted series, retail trade grew by 1.2%, with positive results in 19 of the 27 FUs, highlighting: Rondônia (17.5%), Santa Catarina (12.5%) ) and Paraná (11.1%). On the other hand, there were falls in seven of the 27 FUs, with highlights for: Minas Gerais (-2.1%), Rio Grande do Norte (-1.5%) and Amazonas (-1.4%).

For the same comparison, in the extended retail trade, the positive change between June and July (1.1%) was followed by 15 of the 27 Federation Units, with highlights for: Santa Catarina (6.7%), Paraná (6 .2%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (5.3%). On the other hand, registering a decrease, are 12 of the 27 Federation Units, with highlights for: Maranhão (-2.6%), Rio Grande do Norte (-2.2%) and Sergipe (-2.2%).

In the annual comparison, sales increased in 20 of the 27 Federation Units

Compared to July 2020, the change in the national retail trade had a predominance of positive results in 20 of the 27 Federation Units, with highlights to: Rondônia (35.8%), Piauí (25.5%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (18.0%). On the other hand, with negative pressure, are seven of the 27 Federation Units, with highlights to: Amazonas (-9.7%), Maranhão (-8.1%) and Ceará (-6.7%).

Considering the extended retail trade, in comparison with July 2020, the regional distribution showed a predominance of positive results in 21 of the 27 Federation Units, highlighting: Piauí (27.4%), Mato Grosso do Sul (21.2% ) and Rondônia (21.1%). On the other hand, with negative pressure, are six of the 27 Federation Units: Amazonas (-10.8%), Paraíba (-5.9%) and Maranhão (-5.1%).
