Volume of services increases 1.7% in June

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of services in Brazil advanced 1.7% in June 2021 over May, accruing a gain of 4.4% in the last three months. As a result, the services sector gets farther from the pre-pandemic level, standing 2.4% above February 2020 and reaching its highest level since May 2016. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the sector registered the fourth consecutive positive rate by advancing 21.1% in June 2021 over June 2020. The cumulative index in the year hit 9.5% and the cumulative index in 12 months, 0.4%.

The rise of 1.7% between May and June 2021 was followed by all the five activities investigated, highlighted by the expansions coming from information and communication services (2.5%), transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (1.7%) and services rendered to families (8.1%). Information and communication services peaked the time series, started in January 2011. Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing registered the highest level since May 2015. And services rendered to families hit its highest level since February 2020.

The following activities exerted minor impacts on the overall index: professional, administrative and complementary services (1.4%) and  other services (2.3%), which registered a cumulative growth in the May-June period of 3.6% and 3.5%, respectively.

The quarterly moving average expanded 1.5% in the quarter ended in June 2021 against the level of the previous month, thus maintaining the predominantly upward path since July last year.

Among the sectors, still in relation to the marginal movement of that index, all the five activities recorded positive figures this month: services rendered to families (11.9%), transportation (2.0%), information and communication (1.5%), professional, administrative and complementary (1.1%) and  other services (1.0%).

In June 2021, volume of services advanced 21.1% over June 2020 in the seasonally-unadjusted series, posting the fourth positive rate in a row. All the five activities advanced, as well as 83.1% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, that of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (28.0%) exerted the major positive contribution to the total volume of services, leveraged, to a great extent, by the increase in the revenue of the enterprises of road transportation of cargo, air transportation of passengers, port and terminal management, road transportation of passengers, airport operations and pipeline transportation.

Services of cargo transportation and logistics support maintained the good performance started in mid-2020, whereas transportation of passengers now benefited from the low comparison basis, since it registered a significant drop in the revenue of the enterprises that operate in these segments (road, air and metro-railway) in June last year, due to the reduced mobility of the population.

Less impacting the overall index, though not less important, came information and communication services (13.6%), professional, administrative and complementary (16.6%), rendered to families (72.6%) and  other services (15.6%).

The advance in the sector of information and communication services (13.6%) was due to the increase in the revenue in the segments of portals, content providers and Internet search engines; open TV activities; technical support, maintenance and other services in information technology; other telecommunications activities; and data processing, application services providers and Internet hosting services.

The sector of professional, administrative and complementary services (16.6%) was influenced by solutions of electronic payment; car rental; general cleaning services; engineering services; rental of temporary workforce; selection and agencying of workforce; technical activities related to architecture and engineering; and legal activities.

The advance in services rendered to families (72.6%) was due to restaurants; hotels; catering services; fitness activities; funeral activities; and assorted education activities.

In  other services (15.6%), the rise was due to the activities of securities brokers; recovery of plastic material; consulting services in financial investments; insurance, supplementary pension and health brokers; real estate activities; fund administration by contract or commission; and administration of stock exchange and counter market.

Compared with the same period in 2020, the cumulative index in the year (first semester) expanded 9.5%, with all the five dissemination activities recording positive rates and a growth in more than half (63.3%) of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, the most important positive contributions came from transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (14.8%) and information and communication (8.4%). The former was leveraged by the increase in the revenue of enterprises that operate in the segments of road transportation of cargo, port and terminal management, air transportation of passengers, airport operation, railway transportation of cargo, pipeline transportation, transportation logistics, and maritime and port support navigation. The latter was leveraged by the activities of portals, content providers and other Internet information services; software development and licensing; other telecommunications activities; open TV activities; and technical support, maintenance and other services in information technology.

The other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (5.5%); other services (9.5%); and services rendered to families (2.9%). In the first one, the revenue of the enterprises of engineering services, technical activities related to architecture and engineering; car rental; legal activities; collection agencies and credit bureaus; rental of temporary workforce; and call centers increased In  other services, the rise was due to the activities of recovery of plastic material; securities brokers; administration of stock exchange and counter market; fund administration by contract or commission; support activities for forestry; and insurance, supplementary pension and health brokers. And the advance in services rendered to families was due to restaurants, hotels and funeral activities.

Services grow in 23 of 27 Federation Units

In regional terms, 23 out of 27 Federation Units expanded in volume of services in June 2021 against the immediately previous month. The most important impact came from Rio de Janeiro (5.4%), followed by São Paulo (0.5%), Minas Gerais (2.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.4%), Pernambuco (5.4%), Santa Catarina (3.1%) and the Federal District (3.3%).

On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-5.0%), Bahia (-0.8%) and Tocantins (-1.8%) posted the only retractions in regional terms. On its turn, Alagoas (0.0%) remained stable over May.

Compared with June 2020, the advance in the rate for Brazil (21.1%) was followed by all the Federation Units. The major positive contribution came from São Paulo (20.0%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (20.6%), Minas Gerais (25.7%), Paraná (17.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (19.8%) and Santa Catarina (24.6%).

Compared with the same period in 2020, the cumulative index in the year advanced in all the 27 Federation Units. The major positive impact was registered in São Paulo (9.9%), followed by Minas Gerais (14.7%), Rio de Janeiro (7.1%) and Santa Catarina (17.1%).

Index of tourism activities advances 11.9% in June

In June 2021, the index of tourism activities rose 11.9% over the previous month, the second consecutive positive rate in a period in which it accrued a gain of 43.0%. However, it should be highlighted that the segment of tourism should grow 29.5% to resume the level of February last year.

In regional terms, all the 12 places surveyed followed the expansion movement registered in the national tourism activity (11.9%). The most relevant contribution came from São Paulo (5.3%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (12.4%) and Minas Gerais (19.7%).

Compared with June 2020, the index of volume of tourism activities in Brazil expanded 92.7%, the third positive rate in a row. The index was mainly leveraged by the increase in the revenue in the sectors of air transportation, restaurants, hotels, road transportation of passengers, car rental and catering services.

All the 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured registered an advance in tourism services, with a highlight to São Paulo (69.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (74.4%), followed by and Minas Gerais (101.2%), Bahia (210.0%), Pernambuco (174.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (139.9%).

In the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities rose 4.6% against the same period last year, leveraged, above all, by the sectors of air transportation of passengers, car rental, hotels and restaurants.

In regional terms, ten out of 12 places surveyed also recorded positive rates, highlighting the gains coming from Rio de Janeiro (6.3%), followed by Bahia (4.2%), Pernambuco (19.6%), Goiás (28.1%) and Minas Gerais (7.1%). On the other hand, São Paulo (-5.8%) posted the major negative influence on the tourism index.
