The rise of 0.7% between March and April 2021 was followed by two out of five activities investigated: information and communication (2.5%), which accrued a gain of 4.7% over the last three months; and services rendered to families (9.3%), which recovered only a small part of the drop of 28.0% registered in March. On the other hand, the only negative figures this month were professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.6%), reaching the second consecutive negative rate in the March-April period (-2.0%); and  other services (-0.9%), offsetting a small part of the cumulative gain of 6.2% between February and March. After retreating 3.1% in March, the sector of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.0%) remained stable in April.

The quarterly moving average advanced 0.5% in the quarter ended in April 2021 over the level of the previous month, maintaining the upward trend started in July 2020.

Four out of five activities rose: information and communication (1.6%), transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.7%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.3%) maintained the upward trend since July 2020, as well as volume of services in Brazil as a whole. The sector of other services (1.7%) interrupted three negative rates in a row. On the other hand, services rendered to families (-4.9%) registered the second consecutive negative figure.

In April 2021, volume of services advanced 19.8% over April 2020, the second consecutive positive rate and the most intense in the time series, started in January 2012. All the five activities advanced, as well as 78.3% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sector, that of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (30.7%) exerted the major positive contribution to the total volume of services, leveraged, to a great extent, by the increase in the revenue of the enterprises of road transportation of cargo, port and terminal management, road transportation of passengers, air transportation, concessionaires of highways, national mail and airport operations.

Therefore, the growth of the sector was explained not only by the segments of cargo transportation and logistics support, which maintained the good performance started in the middle of last year, but also by the advance noticed in passenger transportation, which benefited from the low comparison basis, since April 2020 was the first month of social distancing due to COVID 19.

The advance in the sector of information and communication services (12.8%) was due to the increase in the revenue in the segments of portals, content providers and Internet search engines; software development and licensing; open TV activities; other telecommunications activities; and data processing, application services providers and Internet hosting services.

Professional, administrative and complementary services (10.9%) rose in the segments of electronic payment solutions; administration of loyalty programs; engineering services; management of intangible assets; technical activities related to architecture and engineering; car rental; and organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions.

Services rendered to families (65.8%) were influenced by restaurants, hotels, catering services and fitness activities.

The advance in the sector of other services (16.8%) was due to securities brokers, recovery of plastic materials, administration of stock exchange and counter market, real estate activities and forestry support.
