Livestock quarterly surveys – first results: slaughter decreases for cattle and rises for chicken and hogs/pigs in Q4 2020

The first results of animal production in the 4th quarter of 2020 show that the slaughter of cattle fell 10.3%, whereas the slaughter of hogs and pigs increased 1.6% and of chickens rose by 5.5% in relation to the same quarter of 2019.
In comparison with the third quarter of 2020, the slaughter of cattle and pigs fell 5.8% and 4.7%, respectively, and that of chickens grew 2.5%.
The acquisition of milk was 6.71 billion liters, an increase of 0.6% in the annual comparison and 4.1% in relation to the previous quarter.
The acquisition of leather pieces by tanneries fell 3.9% compared to the 4th quarter of 2019 and 8.5% in relation to the third quarter of 2020, adding up to 7.5 million whole pieces of raw cowhide.
977 million dozen hen eggs were produced in the fourth quarter of 2020, a decrease of 1.5% in the annual comparison and 3.4% in relation to the third quarter of 2020.
The complete results, including data for the end of 2020 and for the Federation Units, will be released on March 18, 2021.
Cattle slaughter decreases in relation to the previous quarter and in the annual comparison
In the 4th quarter of 2020, 7.25 million cattle head were slaughtered, a negative change of 10.3% in comparison with the same period of 2019 and a reduction of 5.8% in relation to the previous quarter, the 3th quarter of 2020.
The production of 1.96 million metric tons of cattle carcasses indicates a decrease of 6.5%in relation to the 4th quarter of 2019 and of 4.6% in relation to the 3th quarter of 2020.
Slaughter of hogs and pigs grows in the annual comparison and drops in relation to the previous quarter
Regarding the slaughter of hogs and pigs, it summed up 12.10 million head in the 4th quarter of 2020, representing an increase of 1.6% in relation to the same quarter in the previous year and a decrease of 4.7% in comparison with the 3th quarter of 2020.
The cumulative weight of carcasses recorded 1.08 million metric tons, an increase of 1.7% in relation to the 4º quarter of 2019 and a decrease of 7.8% in comparison with the previous quarter.
Slaughter of chickens grows 5.5% in annual comparison
With 1.55 billion of chicken heads, the slaughter increased 5.5% in relation to the 4th quarter of 2019 and 2.5% in comparison with the 3th quarter of 2020.
The cumulative weight of carcasses was 3.57 million metric tons, an increase of 5.2% in relation to the 4th quarter of 2019 and of 2.5% against the previous quarter.
Milk acquisition increases in both comparisons and reaches 6.71 billion liters
The raw milk acquisition made by establishments that operate under some type of health inspection (federal, state or municipal) was 6.71 billion liters. The result shows an increase of 0.6% in comparison with the 4th quarter of 2019 and of 4.1% in comparison with the 3th quarter of 2020.
Leather acquisition drops 3.9% in the comparison with the 4th quarter of 2019
The tanneries reported having received 7.5 million whole units of raw cowhide in the 4th quarter of 2020, a drop of 3.9% in comparison with 4th quarter of 2019 and of 8.5% in relation to the previous quarter. The Quarterly Survey of Leather checks upon tanneries that tan at least 5,000 whole units of raw cowhide a year.
Production of hen eggs drops in both comparisons
The production of hen eggs was 977 million dozen in the 4th quarter of 2020, a decrease of 1.5% in relation to the same period previous year and of 3.4% in comparison with the 3th quarter of 2020.
