Quarterly Surveys of Livestock – First Results: cattle slaughter falls while slaughter of hogs, pigs and chicken grows in the third quarter of 2020

The first results of animal production in the 3rd quarter of 2020 indicate that the slaughter of cattle decreased 10.8%, that of hogs and pigs increased by 7.0% and that of chickens increased by 1.8% in relation to the same quarter of 2019. In comparison with the 2nd quarter of 2020, the slaughter of cattle and hogs and pigs rose 3.8%, while that of chickens grew 6.2%. The acquisition of milk was 6.36 billion liters, an increase of 1.2% in the annual comparison and an increase of 10.5% in relation to the previous quarter. The acquisition of hide pieces by tanneries fell 6.6% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2019 and grew 9.5% in relation to the second quarter of 2020, adding up to 8.02 million whole rawhide pieces. The production of hen eggs reached 993.19 million dozens in the third quarter of 2020, an increase of 2.0%, both in the annual comparison and in relation to the second quarter of 2020.
Cattle slaughter falls in annual comparison, but grows in the quarter
In the 3rd quarter of 2020, 7.58 million cattle head were slaughtered, which represents a negative change of 10.8% in comparison with the 3rd quarter of 2019. In relation to the 2nd quarter of 2020, there was an increase of 3.8%.
The production of 2.02 million metric tons of bovine carcasses in the third quarter of 2020 consisted of a retraction of 8.0% in relation to the same quarter of the previous year and an increase of 7.6% in relation to the second quarter of 2020.
Slaughter of hogs and pigs grows 7.0% in the annual comparison
The slaughter of hogs and pigs totaled 12.57 million head in the 3rd quarter of 2020, an increase of 7.0% in relation to the same quarter of the previous year. There was an increase of 3.8% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2019.
The cumulative weight of carcasses registered 1.16 million metric tons in the 3rd quarter of 2020, which consisted of increases of 9.4% in relation to the 3rd quarter of 2019 and of 4.8% in comparison with the 2nd quarter of 2020 .
Chicken slaughter rises to 1.50 billion head
1.50 billion chicken heads were slaughtered in the third quarter of 2020. This result meant an increase of 1.8% in relation to the equivalent quarter of 2019. There was also an increase of 6.2% in comparison with the second quarter of 2020.
The cumulative weight of carcasses was 3.45 million metric tons in the third quarter of 2020, a number that indicates an increase of 0.3% in relation to the third quarter of 2019. There was an increase of 7.1% compared to the second quarter of 2020.
Acquisition of milk increases and reaches 6.36 billion liters
The purchase of raw milk made by establishments that operate under some type of health inspection (federal, state or municipal) was 6.36 billion liters in the third quarter of 2020. This amount corresponds to an increase of 1.2% in relation to the volume registered in the 3rd quarter of the previous year. In relation to the 2nd quarter of 2020, there was an increase of 10.5%.
Acquisition of leather was 6.6% lower in annual comparison
The Quarterly Survey of Leather shows that tanneries that tan at least 5,000 whole units of raw cowhide per year reported having received 8.02 million whole pieces of leather in the third quarter of 2020. This amount was 6.6% lower compared to the 3rd quarter of the previous year. There was an increase of 9.5% in relation to the 2nd quarter of 2020.
Production of hen eggs grows 2.0% over the previous year
The production of hen eggs was 993.19 million dozen in the third quarter of 2020. The result represented an increase of 2.0% both in relation to the same quarter of 2019 and compared to the second quarter of 2020.
