Retail sales retreat 1.0% in January

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the national retail trade retreated (-1.0%) in January 2020 over December. The quarterly moving average was – 0.4% in the quarter ended in January. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the retail trade increased 1.3% against January 2019, the tenth consecutive positive rate. The cumulative index over the last 12 months was 1.8%.

In the extended retail trade, which includes Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, volume of sales rose 0.6% over December 2019, whereas the moving average was -0.3%. The extended retail trade advanced 3.5% in relation to January 2019, the tenth consecutive positive rate. The cumulative index over the last 12 months was 3.9%. Volume of sales lost pace once again in January 2020, expressed not only by the decline of -1.0% over December, yet also by the dissemination of negative rates among the investigated activities. As a result, the retail trade remained in January 5.4 p.p. below the record level reached in October 2014. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the retail trade increased 1.3% over January 2019 and, in the extended retail trade, 3.5%. Nevertheless, the cumulative volume of sales in 12 months remained stable in both the retail and extended retail.
Five of eight activities surveyed drop

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the retreat of 1.0% in volume of sales in the retail trade in January 2020 took five out of the eight activities to drop: Furniture and household appliances (-1.9%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-1.6%), Fuels and lubricants (-1.4%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-1.2%) and Other personal and household articles (-0.2%).
On the other hand, Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (1.3%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.2%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic products, toiletries and cosmetics (0.1%), advanced in sales over December 2019.
In the seasonally-adjusted series for the extended retail trade, volume of sales increased 0.6% in January over December 2019, partly offsetting the retreat of 0.8% registered in the previous month. In this same comparison, Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces rose 8.5%, whereas Construction material changed -0.1%, after both of them decline 5.0% and 1.2%, respectively, in the previous month.

In January 2020 over January 2019, the retail trade increased 1.3%, with positive rates prevailing in five out of the eight activities surveyed. Among the activities that rose, the highlights were Furniture and household appliances (11.0%) and Other personal and household articles (7.6%). Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic products, toiletries and cosmetics (7.1%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (4.2%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (3.7%) also rose.

On the other hand, Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-2.8%) exerted their major negative pressure, followed by Fuels and lubricants (-2.3%) and Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-6.7%).

Having advanced 3.5% over January 2019, the extended retail trade recorded the tenth positive rate in a row. The result of January 2020 mainly reflected the contribution coming from the performance of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (10.2%).

Major activities

Having increased 11.0% in volume of sales in January 2019, Furniture and household appliances exerted the major positive impact on the overall rate of the retail trade in January 2020, after rising 18.6% in December. After changing from 3.6% in December to 4.8% in January, the cumulative index over the last 12 months maintained the gain of pace reported since August 2019, the last negative point registered by this indicator in the time series (-0.8%).

Other personal and household articles, which includes department stores, glasses stores, jewelry stores, sports good stores, toy stores, etc., rose 7.6% in volume of sales in relation to January 2019. It was the seventh consecutive advance and it exerted the second biggest positive contribution to the result of the retail. The cumulative index over the last 12 months posted a rate of 6.2%, a figure close to that reported in December 2019 (6.1%).

Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic products, and toiletries increased 7.1% in sales against January 2019 and it was the third biggest positive contribution to the overall rate of the retail and the 33rd consecutive positive change in the comparison with the same month in the previous year. In terms of the cumulative result over the last 12 months up to January (6.8%), this sector remained stable for the third month in a row.

Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear registered a positive rate of 4.2% over January 2019, after a result close to stability in December (-0.1%). Having changed from 0.1% in December to 0.5% in January 2020, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months interrupted the downward trend in the pace of sales, started in July 2019 (1.3%).

Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery increased 3.7% over January 2019, the second month of growth after a sequence of 28 negative rates. Although on the negative side since March 2014 (-0.2%), the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months reduced 4.1 p.p. when it changed from -20.7% in December to -16.6% in January 2020.

Having declined 2.8% against January 2019, Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco recorded the second negative rate after six consecutive positive rates in this comparison. As a result, this segment exerted the biggest negative impact on the retail trade. After advancing 0.4% up to December, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months remained stable (0.0%) in January.

Having retreated 2.3% in volume of sales over January 2019, Fuels and lubricants exerted the second biggest negative contribution for the overall retail. The rise of the fuel prices above the average change of prices was a relevant factor that was negatively influencing the performance of this sector. Therefore, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months (0.3%) pointed out a loss of pace in relation to the cumulative rate up to December (0.6%).

Office, computer and communication equipment and material declined 6.7% in relation to January 2019. The cumulative indicator over the last 12 months (0.1%) reduced the pace of sales in relation to December (0.8%).

Extended retail

Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces rose 10.2% in relation to January 2019, its tenth positive rate in a row. It exerted the biggest contribution to the extended retail this month. Having recorded 10.1% up to January, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months remained virtually stable in relation to the cumulative index up to December (10.0%).

Having increased 2.5% over January 2019 after advancing 4.9% in December 2019, Construction material registered the fifth consecutive positive rate in this comparison. Having changed from 4.2% in December to 4.3% in January, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months maintained the upward trend started in August 2019.

Retail sales fall in 16 of 27 Federation Units

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the retail sales fell in 16 out of the 27 Federation Units from December 2019 to January 2020, highlighted by: Amapá (-10.4%), Bahia (-6.9%) and Tocantins (-5.6%). On the other hand, 11 out of the 27 Federation Units rose, highlighted by Rondônia (5.2%), Roraima (3.4%) and Acre (3.2%).
The extended retail trade recorded positive figures in 17 out of the 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Rondônia (3.7%), Roraima (3.2%) and Goiás (3.1%). Eight out of the 27 Federation Units pressed negatively, highlighted by: Bahia (-6.6%), Amapá (-6.6%) and Tocantins (-2.5%). Paraíba and Acre remained stable (0.0%) in sales against December 2019.
