The quarterly moving average, in the seasonally adjusted series, for the industry overall, had decrease of 0.5% in the quarter ended in January 2020 compared to the previous month, keeping the downward trend started in October 2019.

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series in January, nine of the 15 places surveyed had negative rates, with a highlight to Minas Gerais (-2.1%), Goiás (-1.7%), Mato Grosso (-1.5%), Espírito Santo (-1.5%) and Pará (-1.1%).

On the other hand, Bahia (1.4%), Rio de Janeiro (1.2%), the Northeast Region (1.1%) and Ceará (0.9%) posted the major advances in January 2020.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the industrial sector showed reduction of 0.9% in January 2020, with 7 of the 15 places surveyed recording negative results. It is worth mentioning that January 2020 (22 days) had the same number of business days as the same month a year ago. This month, Espírito Santo (-20.9%) and Minas Gerais (-14.2%) registered the most intense declines.

The result of Espírito Santo was influenced, mainly, by the decreases seen in the sectors of mining and quarrying industries (iron ore -pelleted or sintered, crude petroleum oil and natural gas) and pulp, paper and paper products (pulp). The result of Minas Gerais had the impact of the performance of mining industries (iron ore - raw or processed) and basic metals (ferroniobium, ingots, blocks, billets, or special / alloyed steel plates, unwrought gold, stainless steel coils or plates - including strips, pig iron and artifacts and various pieces of cast iron).

Pará (-6.6%), Mato Grosso (-5.7%), Goiás (-2.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.6%) also recorded negative rates above the industry average (-0.9%), whereas Santa Catarina (-0.5%) closed the set of places with production retreat this month.

On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (9.8%) and Bahia (8.3%) had the sharpest advances in January 2020, mostly driven by the positive behavior from mining and quarrying activities (crude petroleum oil and natural gas) coke, petroleum derivatives and biofuels (fuel oils, basic lubricants, liquefied petroleum gas and motor gasoline) and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (cars, trucks and bus bodies), in Rio de Janeiro.

In Bahia, the impacts were from coke, petroleum products and biofuel (fuel oil, diesel fuel and naphthas for petrochemical), pulp, paper and paper products (pulp) and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (cars), in the second. Pernambuco (6.7%), Northeast Region (6.7%), Amazonas (4.4%), Ceará (4.1%), Paraná (2.6%) and São Paulo (2.3%) also had positive rates this month.

Comparing the last quarters of 2019 and 2020, both against the same periods in the previous year, six of the fifteen places surveyed posted loss of dynamism, following the movement of the national index, which fell from -0.5% to -0.9%. The sharpest reductions were in Goiás (from 6.7% to -2.0%), Mato Grosso (from 2.4% to -5.7%), Minas Gerais (from -8.6% to -14.2%), Amazonas (from 9.9% to 4.4%) and Pará (from -1.9% to -6.6%), whereas the main gains were in Bahia (from -2.4% to 8.3%), Pernambuco (from -0.2% to 6.7%) and Northeast Region (from 0.7% to 6.7%).

In the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months (-1.0%) of January 2020, the industry reduced the pace of the loss compared with the results from previous months. Seven of the fifteen places surveyed recorded negative rates in January 2020, but seven had more dynamism over the indexes of December 2019. Amazonas (from 4.2% to 5.5%), Bahia (from -2.8% to -1.7%), Northeast Region (from -3.0% to -2.0%) and Pernambuco (from -2.2% to -1.2%) had the main gains between December 2019 and January 2020.
