Quarterly livestock surveys – first results: cattle slaughter decreases and slaughter of hogs and pigs and chickens increases in Q4 2019

The first results for the animal production in the fourth quarter of 2019 show that cattle slaughter rose 1.8%, that of hogs and pigs increased 6.1% and that of chickens grew 2.8%, compared with the same period in 2018. In comparison with Q3 2019, the slaughter of cattle and chickens fell by 5.4% and 1.0%, respectively, whereas that of hogs and pigs, by 1.5%. Milk acquisition was 6.64 billion liters, with a decrease of 0.9% in the annual comparison and an increase of 5.5% against the previous quarter. The acquisition of rawhide pieces by tanneries fell 12.4% against the fourth quarter of 2018 and was 8.2% lower than in Q3 2019, amounting to 7.88 million rawhide pieces. A total 981.54 million dozens of hen eggs were produced in the fourth quarter of 2019, with increases of 4.3% in the annual comparison and 1.7% in the quarterly comparison. Cattle slaughter records decrease of 1.8% in relation to Q4 in the previous year 

In Q4 2019, a total 8.04 million cattle head were slaughtered, which represents a negative change of 1.8% against the same quarter in 2018. In comparison with Q3 2019, there was a decrease of 5.4%.

The production of 2.08 million metric tons of cattle carcass in Q4 2019 pointsto an increase of 0.5% in relation to the quarter equivalent to 2018 and a decrease of 5.1% against that figure of the previous quarter. 

Slaughter of hogs and pigs increases to 11.87 million head

The slaughter of hogs and pigs amounted to 11.87 million head in Q4 2019, an increase of 6.1% in comparison with Q4 2018. Against Q3 2019, slaughter increased by 1.5%.

The cumulative slaughter of carcasses recorded 1.06 million metric tons in Q4 2019, resulting in increases of 7.8% in comparison with the same quarter a year ago and of 0.4% against Q3 2019. 

Slaughter of chickens increases by 2.8% in the annual comparison 

A total 1.46 billion chicken head were slaughtered in Q4 2019. That result represents an increase of 2.8% in relation to the equivalent quarter in 2018. On the other hand, the result points to a decrease of 1.0% in comparison with Q3 2019. 

The cumulative weight of carcasses was 3.36 million metric tons in Q4 2019, a figure tha points to an increase of 0.8% against Q4 2018 and a decrease of 2.6% versus the previous quarter. 

Milk acquisition amounts to 6.64 billion liters

Acqusition of raw milk by establishments under some type of sanitary inspection (federal, state or municipal) was 6.64 billion liters in Q4 2019. That figure corresponds to a decrease of 0.9% in comparison with the volume registered in the same quarter a year ago. In comparison with Q3 2019, there was an increase of 5.5%. 

Acquisition of leather falls 12.4% in the annual comparison 

The Quarterly Survey of Leather shows that tanneries responsible for at least five thousand units of leather rawhide per year reported having received 7.88 million pieces in Q4 2019. That amount was 12.4% smaller in the comparison with that of Q4 2018 and 8.2% below the amount recorded in the previous quarter. 

Production of hen eggs recorded increase of 1.7% against previous quarter 

The production of hen eggs was 981.54 million dozens in Q4 2019. The result represented increments of 4.3% against the same quarter in 2018 and 1.7% in comparison with Q3 2019.
