In November, retail sales increased 0.6%

In November 2019, the volume of sales of National retail trade increased 0.6%, in comparison with the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series. That was the seventh positive rate in a row, in a period when retail trade had a cumulative increase of 3.3%. The quarterly moving average index, after an increase of 0.4% in the quarter ended in October, grew 0.5% in the quarter ended November.

Retail trade increased 2.9% in November 2019 in comparison with the figure in the same month a year ago, recording the eight consecutive positive rate in this comparison. As a result, retail trade had a cumulative increase of 1.7% from January to November 2019, versus the same period a year ago. The cumulative indicator in 12 months, having changed from 1.8% to 1.6% in November, pointed to sales deceleration.

The volume of sales of extended retail trade, which includes the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, recorded a decrease of 0.5% against October 2019, thus interrupting a sequence of continuous increase for eight months in a row, a period when extended retail had a cumulative increase of 5.1%.

The quarterly moving average ended November (0.4%) was a sign of sales deceleration, when compared to the quarterly moving average in the quarter ended October.

Extended retail trade increased 3.8%, against November 2018, the eighth positive rate in a row. So, extended retail trade had a cumulative increase of 3.8% from January to November 2019, against the same period a year ago. The cumulative indicator in 12 months, having changed from 3.8% to 3.6% in November, also registered deceleration in sales. The complete publication in available on the right of the page.

Four of the eight activities surveyed recorded increases in November, in the seasonally adjusted series

In the seasonally-adjusted series of retail trade, four of the eight activities surveyed recorded increase in volume of sales. Among the sectors with rise of sales versus October figures, stand out: Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics  (4.1%), Other personal and household articles (1.0%) and  Furniture and household appliances (0.5%), mainly due to Black Friday discounts observed last November. Office, computer and communication material and equipment also recorded a positive rate (2.8%), against the previous month.

The negative highlights were Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (-0.2%) and Fuels and lubricants (-0.3%), both making up for part of the cumulative increase of the last two months, respectively 3.4 % and 2.7 %. The activity Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-4.7%) also recorded a decrease in sales in comparison with October 2019.

The most influential sector in terms of retail trade, Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.0%), recorded stability in terms of sales versus October. 

In November 2019, against the same month in the previous year, retail trade recorded and increase of 2.9%, with a predominance of positive rates reaching seven of the eight activities surveyed. Among the sectors that reorded increase, stand out: Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (2.4%), followed by Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (9.5%) and Furniture and household appliances (4.8%). Positive rates were also registered by: Other personal and domestic articles (1.4%), Fuels and lubricants (0.7%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (1.5%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (8.0%). With a decrease in sales in relation to November 2010, there was the activity Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-14.7%).

Considering extended retail trade, the volume of sales recorded a decrease of 0.5%, against October 2019, in the seasonally adjusted series, interrupting a period of eight months with consecutive increase. In the same comparison, the sector of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces fell by 1.0%, making up for part of the increase (2.4%) registered in the previous monnth. Construction material remained stable, with a change of 0.1%, after an increase of 2.2% in October 2019. 

Being 3.8% up versus November 2018, the volume of exteded retail trade registered the eighth positive rate in a row. The cumulative indicator from January to November stayed at 3.8%. In relation to the cumulative index in 12 months (3.6%) there was deceleration against October (3.8%). The result of November 2019 reflected, mainly, the contribution from Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, with an advance of 6.7%, whereas Construction material increased by 4.4%.

The sector of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with an increase of 2.4% against November 2018, registered the sixth consecutive month of growth in this comparison and exerted the biggest positive impact on the overall retail trade rate. This performance of this activity has been supported by the increase of the usual real wage bill and of the employed population. The result of the cumulative index in the year between January and November was of 0.7% rise compared with the same period in the previous year. The analysis of the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months, having increased 0.8% in November, showed stability in relation to October (0.9%).

The activity of Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics with an increase of 9.5% in sales against November 2018, accounted for  the second biggest contribution to the overall retail rate, registering the thirty-first consecutive positive change in the comparison with the same month in the previous year. The cumulative index between 2019’s January and November advanced 6.5% compared to the same period in 2018. In terms of cumulative result over the last 12 months, having changed from 6.6% in October to 6.8% in November, the sector pointed out to  acceleration in sales, maintaining the upward trend of the sector since October 2017 (0.3%).

The segment of Furniture and household appliances, with an increase of 4.8% in the volume of sales in November 2019, against the same month in 2018, exerted the third biggest positive impact on the overall retail trade rate. In relation to the cumulative index between 2019’s January and November, the gain was of 1.9% compared the same period in 2018. The cumulative indicator over the last 12 months, having changed from 0.8% until October to 1.1% in November, pointed to a recovery trend.

The segment of Other personal and domestic articles, which includes department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores and toy stores, with an expansion of 1.4% in the volume of sales in relation to November 2018, registered the fifth consecutive positive rate in this comparison. The cumulative index between January and November showed a rise of 5.1%, against the same period in 2018, while the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months registered an increase of 4.8%, with a loss of 1.5 p.p. in relation to the October’s result (6.3%).

Fuels and lubricants, with an increase of 0.7% in the volume of sales in relation of November 2018, registered the second positive rate in a row in this comparison. The deceleration of fuel prices is the main factor that has been influencing positively the sector performance. The cumulative index between January and November advanced 0.8% against the same period in 2018. As a result, the annualized indicator, cumulative indicator over the last 12 months (0.7%), remained positive for the second consecutive month, indicating  acceleration in relation to the previous month (0.4%).

The sector of Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear, with an increase of 1.5% in relation to November 2018, registered the second consecutive positive rate in this comparison. The cumulative index in the year between January and November remained close to stability (0.2%). As a result, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months, having changed from the increase of 0.3% in October to stability (0.0%) in November, kept the downward trend initiated in July 2019 (1.3%).

The segment of Office, computer and communication material and equipment recorded an increase of 8.0% in relation to 2018, which is the highest rate since February 2019 (9.6%). In the cumulative index between January and November, the sector advanced 0.7% after stability in the previous month. As a result, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months (0.3%) led to deceleration of sales, offsetting the negative change registered in October (-0.1%).

The activity  Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery retreated 14.7% in terms of volume of sales against November 2018, which is the 8th drop in a row in this comparison. The behavior of this activity has been influenced by the closing of physical stores, reflecting changes in the sales flow, as well as changes in the consumers’ behavior, with the rise of marketplaces and the business model of large bookstores. As a result, the cumulative index in the year registered a fall of 23.0% between 2019’s January until November, in relation to the same period in the previous year. As a consequence, the annualized indicator, cumulative indicator over the last 12 months, having changed from -24.5% to -23.2%, remained still negative , which has been happening since March 2014 (-0.2%).

The sector Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, having registered an increase of 6.7% in relation to November 2018, recorded the eighth consecutive positive rate and accounted for the biggest contribution to extended retail. The cumulative index in the year until November had an increase of 10.1% against the same period in 2018. The analysis of the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months, having increased 9.9% until November, meant deceleration in relation to the cumulative rate up to October (10.4%).

With the increase of 4.4% in relation to November 2018, the segment of Construction material registered the third positive rate in a row. As a result, the cumulative index in the year until November increased 4.2% compared to the same period the last year. The cumulative indicator over the last 12 months, having changed from 2.3% in October to 3.8% in November, maintained the upward trend initiated in August 2019 (2.9%).

Sales increase in 22 of 27 Federation Units in the comparison with October

From October to November of 2019, in the seasonally-adjust series, the national average rate of sales of the retail trade increased 0.6%, with predominance of positive results in 22 of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by Roraima (9.3%), Rondônia (8.5%) and Acre (6.7%).

On the other hand, accounting for negative results, , five of the 27 Federation Units, with highlight to: Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte (both with -0.7%), as well as Santa Catarina and the Federal District (both with -0.6%).

In extended retail trade, between October and November, the change in volume of sales was of -0.5%, with a predominance of positive results reaching 14 of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by Roraima (7.7%), Pará (3.2%) and Amazonas (2.5%). On the other hand, with negative figures, there were Espírito Santo (-2.8%), Pernambuco (-2.2%) and Paraíba (-1.9%).

Compared with November 2018, the change in sales in national retail trade was of 2.9%, with a predominance of positive results in 22 of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by Roraima (18.2%), Amapá (16.1%) and Amazonas (13.3%). On the other hand, five of 27 Federation Units had negative results, the highlights being: Piauí (-1.7%), Sergipe (-1.6%) and Alagoas (-1.0%). Concerning the share in the composition of retail trade, there were: São Paulo (3.1%), Santa Catarina (10.2%) and Minas Gerais (3.4%).

Considering the extended retail trade, compared with November 2018, the increase of 2.8% had positive results predominating in 23 of 27 Federation Units, with highlight to, in terms of magnitude of rate: Amapá (25.7%), Roraima (14.2%) and Santa Catarina (12.3%). On the other hand, with negative results, came four of 27 Federation Units: Piauí (-4.3%), Sergipe (-2.8%), Maranhão (-2.2%) and Rondônia (-1,3%). As for participation in the extended retail trade rate, the highlights were: São Paulo (4.0%), Santa Catarina (12.3%) and Minas Gerais (4.4%).
