In November, industry records decrease in 11 of the 15 areas surveyed

In November 2009, in the seasonally adjusted series, 11 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative decreases, being aligned with the 1,2% decrease in industrial output. 

The most significant decreases were those of Paraná, (-8.0%), the biggest since May 2018 (-20.1%); Espírito Santo (-4.9%), with the second negative rate in a row and a cumulative loss of 12.2% in the period; and Pernambuco (-4.1%), after three consecutive months of output increase, a period marked by expansion (4.4%). Bahia (-3.5%), Minas Gerais (-3.4%), São Paulo (-2.6%), Goiás (-2.1%), Pará (-1.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.5%) also recorded figures above the national average (-1.2%). On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (3.7%), Ceará (3.4%) and Mato Grosso (2.7%) registered increases in the month.

In the decrease of 1.2% of the national output of industry from October to November 2019, in the seasonally adjusted series, 11 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative rates. In the month, Paraná (-8.0%), Espírito Santo (-4.9%) and Pernambuco (-4.1%) recorded the most significant decreases, with the first location recording the biggest decrease since May 2018 (-20.1%) and deepening the 0.6% decrease observed in the previous month; the second location recorded the second negative rate in a row; the third one interrupted three months of output increase in a row, a period when there was a cumulative expansion of 4.4%.

Bahia (-3.5%), Minas Gerais (-3.4%), São Paulo (-2.6%), Goiás (-2.1%), Pará (-1.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.5%) also recorded more significant increases than the national average (-1.2%). The Northeast Region (-1.0%) and Santa Catarina (-0.5%) completed the group of areas with negative indexes in November 2019, whereas Amazonas (0,0%) stayed at the same level as in October 2019.

On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (3.7%), Ceará (3.4%) and Mato Grosso (2.7%) recorded increase in the month. The former had an even more positive performance in comparison with that of last October  (0.1%); the second one stopped the decrease of 1.5% recorded in the previous month; and the third one recorded increase in production for the fifth month in a row, with a cumulative expansion of 12.1% in the period.

The evolution of the quarterly moving average for the industry overall evidenced a negative change of 0.1% in the quarter ended November 2019 against the level in the previous month, thus interrupting the upward trend initiated in July 2019. Six of the fifteen areas surveyed recorded negative rates in the month, with a highlight to the decreases in Pará (-4.3%), Espírito Santo (-3.0%) and Paraná (-2.4%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso (1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (1.2%), Northeast Region (1.1%) and Ceará (0.9%) recorded the most significant increases in November 2019.

In comparison with the same month a year ago, industry recorded a decrease of 1.7% in November 2019, with negative results in 10 of the 15 areas surveyed. Espírito Santo (-24.3%) and Minas Gerais (-8.5%) had the most significant decreases. Rio Grande do Sul (-5.5%), Paraná (-4.0%), Santa Catarina (-3.7%), Pará (-3.5%), Bahia (-2.2%) and São Paulo (-2.0%) also had higher negative rates than the average of industry (-1.7%), whereas Pernambuco (-1.6%) and Northeast Region (-1.1%) completed the group of areas with decrease of output in the month. On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (13.3%), Amazonas (11.5%) and Goiás (10.3%) recorded the most relevant decreases in November 2019.

In terms of the cumulative index for the period January – November 2019, against the same period a year ago, the decrease observed in the national output reached seven of the fifteen areas surveyed, the highlights being Espírito Santo (-14.9%) and Minas Gerais (-4.9%). Northeast Regiom (-3.7%), Mato Grosso (-2.9%), Bahia (-2.8%), Pernambuco (-2.4%) and Pará (-1.5%) accounted for the other negative rates, all of them above the average of industry (-1.1%). On the other hand, Paraná (5.4%), Amazonas (3.5%) and Goiás (3.3%) had the biggest increases in terms of the cumulative index in the year.

The annualized rate, the cumulative indicator in the last twelve months up to November 2019, having recorded a decrease of 1.3% in November 2019, repeated the results of September and October. In terms of area, eight of the fifteen areas surveyed recorded negative rates in November 2019, but seven of them had reduced dynamism in comparison with the indexes of last October. Espírito Santo (from -11.1% to -13.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 4.1% to 2.6%), Pará (from 0.2% to -0.8%) and Santa Catarina (from 3.0% to 2.3%) recorded the main decreases between October and November 2019, whereas Goiás (from 1.1% to 3.1%), Rio de Janeiro (from 0.3% to 1.8%) and Amazonas (from 1.1% to 2.2%) recorded the most relevant increases between the two periods.
