Industrial activity recorded increase in 8 of the 15 areas in May, versus April, according to data from the Monthly Survey of Industry. That scenario reflects the decrease of 0.2% in the national industry overall, as reported by the IBGE last week.

Nonetheless, the industrial activity in Pará hit a record figure in the time series, having increased 59.1% against the previous month, due to the recovery of mining and quarrying in the state. According to the survey analyst, Bernardo Monteiro, resuts in the state made up for previous ones.

“With the excess of rain, the output of an important industrial plan had decreased significantly, in the previous month. But there was less rainfall in May and mining and quarrying industry went back to normal". The output of industry had fallen by 30.4% in April.

The eight locations recording decrease  against the previous month were:  Espírito Santo (-2.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%), Santa Catarina (-1.3%) Minas Gerais (-1.0%), RNortheast Region (-0.9%), Ceará (-0.9%), Mato Grosso (-0.7%) and Pernambuco (-0.6%).

On the other hand, the other positive rates, besides those of Pará, were thoise of Rio de Janeiro (8.8%), Goiás (1.6%), Amazonas (1.2%), Bahia (1.1%), Paraná (0.7%) and São Paulo (0.1%). Bernardo highlights that industry in São Pailo had a regular performance and its slight increase results from the start of the sugarcane harvest, which had a positive effect of the food sector in the state.

In comparison with May 2018, industry in the country increased 7.1%, and in 12 of the 15 areas surveyed. Bernardo recalls such increase is a consequence of a very low basis for comparison, since industry was  extremely affected by the truck drivers' strike last year.

The calendar was also helpful, since 2019 had one bsuiness day more than 2018. “Depending on the strategy of production in the sector, one day more can make a difference”.

The biggest increases in relation to May 2018 came from Paraná (27.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (19.9%) and Santa Catarina (19.3%). Nevertheless, Goiás (13.9%), Pernambuco (13.6%), Bahia (12.3%), São Paulo (11.7%) and Ceará (11.4%) also recorded rates above the national average (7.1%), together with the Northeast Region (6.6%), Mato Grosso (5.7%), Rio de Janeiro (5.1%) and Amazonas (3.0%).

Espírito Santo (-17.4%),recorded the most significant decrese in May. Minas Gerais (-2.4%) and Pará (-0.7%) also had negative rates.
