The IBGE´s Annual Survey of Industry - PIA Product 2017 unveiled that diesel fuel was the product with the highest sales value in the Brazilian industry: R$63.7 billion, the equivalent of 2.8% of the total. It was followed by crude petroleum oil (2.6%), iron ore (2.6%) and cars between 1,500 and 3,000 cm3 (2.1%). In a universe with nearly 3,400 products, these four major ones concentrated 10.1% of the total sales of the sector, which hit R$2.3 trillion in 2017. On the other hand, the hundred most important industrial products accounted for 53% of the sales of the sector. In the North Region, nearly one third of the sales came from three products only: iron ore, televisions and cell phones. The support material of PIA Product is on the right side.
The Annual Survey of Industry - PIA Product investigates the production and sales of products and services by the Brazilian industry. In 2017, nearly 3,400 products manufactured by 32.9 thousand enterprises with 30 and more persons employed and their 39.5 thousand industrial local units were surveyed.
The sales value in the industrial local units of these products added up to R$2.3 trillion in 2017 and the sector with the biggest shares among the 29 investigated were: food products (18.7%), chemicals (10.2%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (9.4%), coke, petroleum products and biofuels (9.0%), basic metals (6.6%), machinery and equipment (4.0%), rubber and plastic products (3.8%), extraction of metallic minerals (3.7%), pulp, paper and paper products (3.6%) and computer, electronic and optical products (3.3%). The sum of these ten major industrial activities concentrated 72.3% of the total sales value of industrial products and services in 2017.
The ten major products concentrated 1/5 of the industrial sales value.
In the ranking of the ten biggest products in relation to sales in 2017, diesel fuel remained the leader with R$63.7 billion and share of 2.8% of the total, followed by crude petroleum oil (R$60.8 billion and 2.6% of share), iron ore (R$59.5 billion and 2.6%), cars with engine power from 1,500 to 3,000 cm3 (R$48.5 billion and 2.1%). Together, the ten major products (table below) accounted for 19.1% of the sales value in 2017.

Compared with 2016, the industrial sectors that mostly gained share in the total sales were motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (1.1 percentage points), extraction of metallic minerals (1.0 p.p.), extraction of petroleum and natural gas (0.7 p.p.) and basic metals (0.5 p.p.). Conversely, coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-1.0 percentage point), chemicals (-0.8 p.p.), other transportation equipment (-0.5 p.p.) and non-metallic mineral products (-0.3 p.p.) were the activities that mostly lost share.
Iron ore, TVs and cell phones concentrate 30% of sales in North Region
In the North and Central-West Regions and, less intensely, in the other regions, the industry remained concentrated on the major industrial products. In the North Region, iron ores (16.2%), televisions (7.0%) and cell phones (6.7%) registered the biggest shares and accounted for 30.0% of the total sales in that region.
