PAM 2017: value of national agricultural production drops 0.6% after rising for 7 years

The value of the agricultural production in Brazil was of R$319.6 billion in 2017. Soybeans accounted for 35.1% of this total. After seven years of growth, the value of production dropped 0.6% over 2016, pressed by corn (-12.7%), beans (-28.8%), potatoes (-50.9%) and wheat (-41.9%).

The planted area with the crops under investigation by PAM 2017 increased 2.1% over 2016 and reached 79.0 million ha. The increase in the area and productivity gains provided a record in the volume of soybeans and corn, which rose 18.9% and 52.3%, respectively.

The harvest of cereals, legumes and oilseeds grew 28.2% in 2017 compared with 2016, producing a total of 238.3 million tonnes. Soybeans represented 48.1% of the total production of this group, followed by corn (41.0%).

Corn crops were present in 91.7% of the 5,570 Brazilian municipalities in 2017, followed by cassava (82.5%) and beans (78.8%).

Sorriso (MT) registered the highest value of agricultural production for the third year in a row (R$3.3 billion), a rise of 2.4% over 2016. This municipality had a share of 1.0% in the total value of production in Brazil.

Having mainly harvested sugarcane, coffea arabica, soybeans, oranges and corn, the Southeast concentrated R$91.0 billion, 28.5% of the overall value of agricultural production. São Paulo was the state responsible for more than half of that value (R$53.1 billion), highlighting the municipality of Itapeva (SP), with R$874.3 million distributed among soybeans (40.3%), tomatoes (14.5%), beans (12.0%), corn (3.4%) and potatoes (6.3%).

In the Northeast, only Bahia (-1.6%) and Paraíba (-16.7%) recorded a drop in the value of production. The Northeastern agriculture hit R$36.4 billion, mostly due to the harvest of soybeans, sugarcane, corn, bananas and cotton. Soybeans stood out in this Major Region, mainly due to the agricultural improvement in the states of Maranhão, Piauí and Bahia.

The value of production in the North was of R$22.6 billion in 2017, highlighting cassava, corn and bananas, besides acai (24.5%) and soybeans (21.7%) More than half of that total, R$12.8 billion, came from Pará, particularly from Igarapé-Miri (PA), which had in acai 99.5% of the municipality revenue of R$1.8 billion.

In 2017, the value of production of fruits was 4.6% higher than in 2016, adding up to R$38.9 billion, which included acai for the first time ever. The highlight was oranges (R$8.5 billion), a rise of 2.0%. This crop had 77.8% of its harvested area concentrated in São Paulo, Bahia and Minas Gerais.

The 2017 Municipal Agricultural Production - PAM survey brings information at municipality level on planted area, amount produced and average yield of 64 agricultural products. In addition to the 2017 data, the 2015 and 2016 editions were revised.

Corn, beans, potatoes and wheat drag 0.6% drop in value of production

The value of the agricultural production reached R$319.6 billion in 2017, highlighted by soybeans, which accounted for 35.1% (R$112.2 billion) of this total. After seven consecutive years of growth, this result represented a reduction of 0.6% over 2016. Among the products, the major drops were in the value of corn (-12.7%), coffee total (-13.3%), beans (-28.8%), potatoes (-50.9%) and wheat (-41.9%). São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Piauí, Maranhão and Bahia accounted for 63.5% of the value of agricultural production in Brazil.

In 2017, corn was cropped in 91.7% of the 5,570 Brazilian municipalities, followed by cassava (82.5%) and beans (78.8%).

Planted area increases 2.1% and reaches 79.0 million ha

The planted area was 2.1% larger than in 2016, reaching 79.0 million ha. The harvest of cereals, legumes and oilseeds grew 28.2% in 2017 compared with 2016, adding up to 238.3 million tonnes. Soybeans accounted for 48.1% of the total produced in this group, followed by corn (41.0%), whose area increased by 10.4%. Rice and beans also increased their production by 17.4% and 15.9%, respectively.

The increase in the area and productivity gains caused a record output of a number of crops, highlighted by soybeans and corn, which grew 18.9% and 52.3% in 2017, respectively.

Sorriso (MT) and Sapezal (MT) are municipalities with highest value of production

For the third year in a row, Sorriso (MT) registered the highest value of agricultural production  (R$3.3 billion), a rise of 2.4% over 2016. This total was basically divided among soybeans (65.9%), corn (27.2%), beans (3,4%), upland cotton (2.8%) and rice (0.4%). This municipality had a share of 1.0% in the total value of production in Brazil.

Of the 1.2 million ha of harvested area in 2017 in this locality, more than half (51.4%) was soybeans, representing an increase of 0.8% over the previous year. 2.2 million tonnes of soybeans were harvested, 21.8% more than in 2016. Corn hit 3.8 million tonnes, 109.4% higher than in 2016, though it recorded a value of production 0.2% lower. Beans reduced its value by 56.9% and rose its output by 49.2%, as well as upland cotton, with a drop of 20.7% in value and a growth of 5.2% in volume.

Even falling 6.1%, Sapezal (MT) was the second municipality in value of production, adding up to R$2.6 billion. 595.3 thousand tonnes of upland cottonseed were harvested in this locality, which generated R$ 1.3 billion, a rise of 15.4% over 2016. Soybeans and corn added up to R$952.8 million and R$323.5 million, respectively, representing a reduction of 25.9% and 8.7%, respectively.

Sugarcane is main product in value in Southeast

The Southeast concentrated R$91.0 billion, 28.5% of the value of the national agricultural production, highlighted by sugarcane (39.8%), coffea arabica (14.9%), soybeans (10.0%), oranges (7.4%) and corn (5.8%). São Paulo was the state responsible for more than half of that value (R$53.1 billion), highlighting the municipality of Itapeva (SP), with R$874.3 million distributed among soybeans (40.3%), tomatoes (14.5%), beans (12.0%), corn (3.4%) and potatoes (6.3%).

The state of São Paulo remained in the first position in value of production, with 16.6% of the overall share, followed by Mato Grosso, which maintained its percentage of 13.6%. Ranked in the fifth position in the overall share, Minas Gerais posted the steepest drop in value of production in this Major Region, from 11.8% to 9.8% in 2017, explained by the decrease of 20.9% in the output of coffea arabica over 2016.

Despite the drop of 4.0%, the South generated R$85.7 billion with agriculture, especially with the production of soybeans, corn, rice, tobacco and cassava. Paraná stood out with R$38.0 billion, as well as the municipality of Tibagi (PR), with R$680.8 million, distributed among soybeans (62.3%), corn (14.1%), beans (9.0%), wheat (7.7%) and tomatoes (1.7%). 

The Central-West was the Major Region ranked in the third position in terms of value of the agricultural production (R$83.9 billion), being Mato Grosso responsible for R$43.4 billion, mainly due to the crops of soybeans, corn, sugarcane, upland cotton and beans.

In Northeast, only Bahia and Paraíba register a drop in value of production

The Northeastern agriculture hit R$36.4 billion, mostly due to the harvest of soybeans, sugarcane, corn, bananas and cotton. In the Northeast, only Bahia (-1.6%) and Paraíba (-16.7%) recorded a drop in the value of production. Bahia accounted for R$15.4 billion of this total, highlighted by São Desidério (BA) with R$2.4 billion, a rise of 49.7% over 2016. Of the total value of production of this municipality, soybeans (61.1%), upland cotton (28.9%), corn (6.5%), beans (1.1%) and coffea arabica (1.0%) stood out. Soybeans stood out in this Major Region, particularly due to the advances in the agriculture in the states of Maranhão, Piauí and Bahia.

Acai stands out in North, though soybeans is second crop in value of production

Acai still stood out in the North, though soybeans was already in the second position, mainly due to the increasing cropping in Tocantins and south of Pará. The value of production in this region was of R$22.6 billion in 2017, highlighting cassava, corn and bananas, besides acai (24.5%) and soybeans (21.7%) Of this total, more than half (R$12.8 billion) came from Pará, whose municipality of Igarapé-Miri (PA) was the biggest producer of acai in Brazil, adding up to 280.0 million tonnes and R$1.8 billion in 2017.

Value of production of fruits reaches R$38.9 billion, 4.6% above 2016

In 2017, the value of production of fruits was 4.6% higher than in the previous year, adding up to R$38.9 billion, which included acai for the first time ever. Oranges stood out, adding R$8.5 billion to the national economy, a rise of 2.0%. São Paulo, Bahia and Minas Gerais concentrated 77.8% of the harvested area of oranges in Brazil, the equivalent to 631.7 thousand ha. Having destined 402.9 thousand ha to harvest oranges, São Paulo concentrated nine out of the 10 biggest producers. Casa Branca (SP) ranked in the first position, with 564.6 thousand tonnes and R$228.6 million, followed by Botucatu (SP), Itapetininga (SP), Colômbia (SP), Iara (SP), Avaré (SP), Buri (SP), Angatuba (SP), Rio Real (BA) and Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo (SP).

Besides oranges, São Paulo concentrated 27.1% of all the value of production of fruits. The state generated R$10.6 billion, 2.4% higher than in 2016. Having risen 25.1%, Pará (R$6.8 billion) came after, explained by the inclusion of new harvest areas of acai and by the recovery in the production of other fruits, such as oranges, lemons and tangerines, which rose 49.9%, 107.9% and 2,462.4%, respectively.
