Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate is 13.1% in quarter ending in March

The unemployment rate (13.1%) increased 1.3 percentage points in the moving quarter between January and March 2018 in relation to the quarter from October to December 2017 (11.8%). It dropped 0.6 percentage points when compared with the same moving quarter a year ago, January -March 2017 (13.7%).

The unemployed population (13.7 million) rose 11.2% in relation to the previous quarter (12.3 million). It fell 3,4% against the same quarter last year, when 14.2 million persons were unemployed.

The employed population (90.6 million) dropped 1.7% over the quarter between October and December 2017, when it hit 92.1 million.  It increased 1.8% in relation to the same quarter a year ago, when 88.9 million persons were employed.

As a result, the employment-population ratio (53.6%) decreased 0.9 percentage points over the quarter from October to December 2017 (54.5%). The change was positive (0.5 p.p.) in relation to the same quarter in 2017, when the employment- population ratio was 53.1%.

The number of persons employed with a formal contract (32.9 million) fell 1.2% against the previous quarter (October to December 2017), a reduction of 408 thousand persons. The drop was of -1.5% (less 493 thousand persons) compared with the quarter from January to March 2017.

The number of workers without a formal contract (10.7 million persons) decreased by 402 thousand persons over the previous quarter. It rose 5.2% (more 533 thousand persons) in relation to the same quarter in 2017.

The category of self-employed workers (23.0 million persons) remained stable when compared with the quarter between October and December 2017. It increased 3.8% (more 839 thousand persons) in relation to the same period a year ago.

The average usual real earnings (R$2,169) in the quarter from November 2017 to January 2018 remained stable against the quarter between October and December 2017
(R$2,173) and also in relation to the same quarter last year (R$2,169).

The usual real wage bill (R$191.5 billion) remained stable both in comparison with the moving quarter from October to December 2017 and with the same quarter a year ago.

The unemployment rate was estimated at 13.1% in the moving quarter between January and March 2018, representing an increase of 1.3 percentage points in relation to the quarter from October to December 2017 (11.8%). It dropped (-0.6 percentage points) in relation to the same moving quarter last year, from January to March 2017, when the rate was estimated at 13.7%.

Approximately 13.7 million persons were unemployed in Brazil in the quarter between January and March 2018. This contingent rose 11.2% (more 1.379 million persons) against the quarter from October to December 2017, when 12.3 million unemployed persons were estimated. It fell 3.4% (less 487 thousand unemployed persons) compared with the same quarter a year ago (14.2 million persons).

The number of employed persons was estimated at 90.6 million in the quarter between January and March 2018. This contingent dropped 1.7% in relation to the previous quarter (less 1.528 million persons). This indicator grew 1.8% (more 1.634 million persons) in relation to the same quarter in 2017, when 88.9 million persons were employed in Brazil.

The employment-population ratio – percentage of employed persons in the population at working age – was estimated at 53.6% in the quarter from January to March 2018, falling 0.9 percentage points against the quarter between October and December 2017 (54.5%). This indicator increased 0.5 percentage points in relation to the same quarter last year, when the employment-population ratio had been 53.1%.

The workforce – employed and unemployed persons – was estimated at 104.3 million persons in the quarter from January to March 2018. This population remained stable when compared with the quarter between October and December 2017. An expansion of 1.1% (more 1.1 million persons) was recorded against the same quarter a year ago.

The number of persons out of the workforce was estimated at 64.9 million persons in the quarter from January to March 2018. This contingent remained stable when compared with the quarter between October and December 2017. It also remained stable against the same quarter last year.

Estimated at 32.9 million persons, the contingent of persons employed in the private sector with a formal contract (excluding domestic workers) dropped 1.2% (less 408 thousand persons) against the previous quarter (October-December 2017). It also dropped in relation to the same quarter of 2017: -1.5% (-493 thousand persons).

The number of persons employed in the private sector without a formal contract (10.7 million persons) retreated by 402 thousand persons between January and March 2018. It rose 5.2% over the same quarter a year ago (more 533 thousand persons).

The contingent of self-employed workers (23.0 million) remained stable in the comparison with the previous quarter (October-December 2017). This figure rose 3.8% (more 839 thousand persons) in relation to the same period a year ago.

The number of employers (4.4 million persons) remained stable in relation to the previous quarter. It rose 5.7% (more 234 thousand persons) in relation to the same quarter in 2017.

The category of domestic workers (6.2 million persons) fell 2.6% compared with the quarter from October to December 2017. It remained stable over the quarter between January and March 2017.

Estimated at 11.2 million persons, the group of persons employed in the public sector (including statutory servants and military) fell 2.2% against the previous quarter. It rose 3.2% (more 345 thousand persons) compared with the same quarter last year.

The analysis of the employed persons according to the activity group did not register any growth between the moving quarter from January to March 2018 in relation to the quarter from October to December 2017. The following groups recorded a reduction: Industry (2.7%, or less 327 thousand persons), Construction (5.6%, or less 389 thousand persons), Trade,repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (2.2%, or less 396 thousand persons), Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (1.7%, or less 267 thousand persons) and Domestic services (2.6%, or less 169 thousand persons)

The following categories increased in the comparison with the quarter from January to March 2017: Housing and food (5.7%, or more 283 thousand persons), Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (3.1%, or more 467 thousand persons) and Other services (10.4%, or more 441 thousand persons). The group of Construction decreased (4.1%, or less 280 thousand persons).

The average usual real earnings from all jobs of employed persons was estimated at R$2,169 in the January-March 2018 quarter, remaining stable against the October-December 2017 quarter (R$2,173) and also in relation to the same quarter a year ago (R$2,169).

According to the activity groups, the category of Domestic services increased in the moving quarter from January to March 2018 in relation to the quarter between October and December 2017 (2.4%, or more R$21). The other groups did not show any significant change. All the groups remained stable in the comparison with the quarter from January to March 2017.

The usual real wage bill earned from all jobs by employed persons was estimated at R$191.5 billion for the moving quarter from January to March 2018. This wage bill remained stable in both comparisons.
