In December, services sector rises 1.3%, accrues drop of 2.8% in 2017

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector grew 1.3% in December 2017 in relation to November, after rising 1.0% in November and declining 0.5% in October. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, volume of services increased 0.5% over December 2016, interrupting a series of 32 negative results in this comparison. The cumulative rate in the year and in 12 months stood at -2.8%.

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the segments of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (2.3%); Professional, administrative and complementary services (0.6%) and Other services (0.7%) rose, the first two of them for the second consecutive month, having changed 0.9% and 0.8% in November, respectively.

The segments of Services rendered to families (-0.9%) and Information and communication services (-0.3%) retreated against November, after advancing 0.9% (both segments) between October and November. The special aggregate of Tourism activities grew 2.8%, after rising 1.2% in November.

Nominal revenue changed 0.9% over November in the seasonally-adjusted series and increased 5.0% in relation to December 2016 in the seasonally-unadjusted series. Considering the positive contributions of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (4.8% and contribution of 1.4 p.p.), followed by Information and communication services (2.3% and 0.7 p.p.), the services sector grew 0.5% in relation to December 2016. The negative influences came from Professional, administrative and complementary services 
(-3.9%); Other services (-5.6%) and Services rendered to families (-3.7%), with -0.9 p.p., -0.4 p.p. and -0.3 p.p, respectively.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the services sector changed -0.2% in the fourth quarter of 2017, i.e., it remained virtually stable in relation to the fourth quarter of 2016. This level improved in relation to the same indicators of previous quarters: third quarter (-3.0%), second quarter (-3.5%) and first quarter (-4.7%).

Roraima, Maranhão and Espírito Santo lead volume rise

The highest rises in the seasonally-adjusted regional figures over November took place in Roraima (15.1%), Maranhão (5.4%) and Espírito Santo (4.6%). The most intense drops were in Tocantins (-12.7%), Ceará (-3.4%) and Mato Grosso (-2.6%).   

In the seasonally-unadjusted comparison with December 2016, Mato Grosso (48.8%), Roraima (10.1%) and Amazonas (8.0%) registered the highest rises, while the most intense drops were reported in Tocantins (-18.4%), Ceará (-16.6%) and Amapá (-11.0%).

Federal District and São Paulo fall in tourism

In the seasonally-adjusted regional series, volume of sales in Tourism activities increased in Santa Catarina (10.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (6.2%), Bahia (5.8%), Minas Gerais (5.7%), Espírito Santo (5.4%), Pernambuco (3.0%), Goiás (1.6%), and Paraná, Rio de Janeiro and Ceará (all with 1.4%). The Federal District (-1.0%) and São Paulo (-3.8%) dropped.  

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, Santa Catarina (19.0%), Pernambuco (16.5%), Ceará (12.0%), Espírito Santo (11.2%), Goiás (10.6%), Minas Gerais (10.2%), Bahia (7.4%) and Paraná  (6.8%) rose over December 2016, whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-2.9%), São Paulo (-15.4%), Rio de Janeiro (-15.5%) and the Federal District (16.2%) retreated.
