Along the next five months, nearly 19 thousand enumerators will visit more than 5.3 million agricultural establishments all over the country. The data collection will be fully digital and the operations will be monitored through the Internet. The Census of Agriculture will help to create a new annual survey: the National Agricultural Establishment Sample Survey.
The IBGE begins to collect the data of the 10th Census of Agriculture today. Along five months, the enumerators will visit more than 5.3 million agricultural establishments all over the country, raising information on the area, production, characteristics of the employed persons, use of irrigation and use of pesticides, among other subjects. The important role of family farming in the Brazilian agricultural production will be investigated once again. The results of the Census of Agriculture 2017 should be initially released by mid-2018.
2017 Census of Agriculture selected more than 26 thousand temporary workers
The IBGE carried out two simplified recruitment processes for temporary workers, who will work in the 2017 Census of Agriculture. More than 130 thousand persons enrolled for the 26,010 job positions, 171 of them for professionals with higher education in 18 different knowledge areas, for the Census Analyst position. The other positions were for secondary (6,139, destined to Supervisors) and primary (18,845, for Enumerators) levels. Job positions were opened in slightly more than 4 thousand Brazilian municipalities. The training of the enumerators was decentralized and finished last week.
Data collection digital and monitored through Internet
The data collection of the 2017 Census of Agriculture will be fully digital through Data Collection Mobile Devices - DMCs. These devices run an application fully developed by the IBGE´s Directorate of Data Processing and will be able to display the image of the enumeration area, the position of the enumerator in the terrain and the addresses of the establishments to be enumerated.
It will be also possible to detect new establishments and register them through the DMC. The system uses GPS to assure that the information is collected in the specific enumeration area and even prevents that the questionnaire be opened out of the correct place.
To assure that the questionnaire is filled out in the correct way, the new system will also improve the data edition by guiding the enumerators during the data collection. As soon as the enumerator collects the information, the data begin to be transmitted and checked.
Agriculture in Brazil also investigated through sample survey
The 2017 Census of Agriculture will help to implement the registry of agricultural establishments and the National System of Agricultural Surveys. It will allow the creation of the National Agricultural Establishment Sample Survey, an annual survey that will capture detailed data on revenue and expenses in the production, rural credit and insurance, protection of springs, conservation of fauna and flora, use of pesticides and production techniques, as well as social and family situation of rural workers, among other subjects.
