Volume of services drops 6.3% in November

The volume of services rendered in Brazil dropped 6.3% in November 2015 compared with the same month last year. It registered the highest drop in the time series started in 2012, against -5.8% in October and -4.8% in September. Except for March (2.3%), it maintained the sequence of negative figures recorded in 2015. Concerning the results per activity, all the segments recorded negative changes: services rendered to families (-6.6%); information and communication services (-4.4%); professional, administrative and complementary services (-6.6%), transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-8.2%) and other services (-7.4%). The cumulative rate in the year stood at -3.4% and, in 12 months, at -3.1%. The special aggregate of tourism activities declined 1.9%. In this same comparison, nominal revenue posted a negative change of -0.8% in November over November 2014, against -0.4% in October and 0.0% in September. In terms of the volume rate, the segment of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing contributed the most (-2.6 p.p.), followed by information and communication services (-1.6 p.p.) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.3 p.p.). Services rendered to families and other services accounted for -0.4 p.p.

Services rendered to families retracted 6.6% in terms of volume of services in November over the same month in the previous year, against -4.8% in October and -6.7% in September, maintaining the constant series of negative volume changes since May 2014. The cumulative rate in the year stood at -5.1% and, in 12 months, at -4.8%. Lodging and food services and other services rendered to families dropped 7.2% and 2.5%, respectively.
Compared with the same month last year, information and communication services dropped 4.4% in volume in November, against -3.2% in October and -0.6% in September. The cumulative changes in the year and in 12 months stayed at 0.1%.
Information and communication technology services (ICT) retracted 4.3% in terms of volume, highlighted by telecommunications (-4.7%) and information technology services (-2.9%). Audiovisual, publishing and news agency services changed -4.6% in volume of services, versus the same month a year ago.
The segment of professional, administrative and complementary services dropped 6.6% in terms of volume in November when compared with the same month a year ago, against drops of 7.3% in October and of 8.1% in September. The cumulative rate in the year stood at -3.8% and, in 12 months, at -3.2%. Technical-professional services, which correspond to knowledge-intensive services, declined 7.1% in terms of volume of services and administrative and complementary services, which encompass labor-intensive services, 6.4%.
The segment of transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities registered a negative change of volume of 8.2% in November over the same month last year. In October and September, this segment had negative changes of 6.7% and 6.4%, respectively. The cumulative rate in the year stood at -6.0% and, in 12 months, at -5.5%. Concerning modes, the results of volume were: road transportation (-13.8%), water transportation (15.6%) and air transportation (11.3%). The activity of storage services, support activities for transportation and mailing activities registered a decrease of 6.2%.
The segment of other services dropped 7.4% in November, against -13.8% in October and -9.9% in September. The cumulative rate in the year stood at -8.9% and, in 12 months, at -8.5%.
Tourism activities decreased 1.9% in November over November 2014, against an increase of 0.2% in October and a drop of 3.4% in September. The cumulative changes in the year and in 12 months stayed at -2.2%.
In November, five states drop in volume of services
Concerning the regional figures in November compared with the same month a year ago, five Federation Units changed their volume positively: Roraima (10.9%), Mato Grosso (5.9%), Rondônia (4.1%), Tocantins (2.4%) and Pará (0.5%). The biggest negative changes of volume were reported in Bahia (-17.9%), Amazonas (-15.0%) and Amapá (-14.7%).
According to the selected Federation Units, tourism activities registered positive changes of volume in the Federal District (5.0%), followed by Goiás (3.2%) and Pernambuco (2.8%). Minas Gerais did not show any change and the negative changes of volume were recorded in Espírito Santo (-10.0%), Santa Catarina (-8.1%), Paraná (-6.2%), Bahia (-5.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.4%), Ceará (-3.6%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.5%) and São Paulo (-2.4%).
