Industrial employment changes by -0.4% in October

In October 2014, total salaried persons employed in industry recorded negative change of 0.4% in comparison with the September figure, in the seasonally adjusted series. It was the seventh negative rate in a row, with cumulative loss of 3.9%. With these results, the quarterly moving average index recorded change of 0.5% in the quarter which ended in October 2014 in comparison with the level reached in the previous month, having remained on an upward trend since April 2013. Industrial employment faced decrease of 4.4% in comparison with results of October 2013. It is the 37th consecutive negative result in this type of comparison and the lowest one since September 2009 (-5.4%). As a result, total salaried employed persons also declined considering the first ten months of the year (-3.0%). The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last twelve months, decreased 2.8% and has remained on a downward trend since September last year (-1.0%).

In comparison with the same month a year ago, industrial employment decline 4.4% in October 2014, with decrease of the number of workers in the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative impact was recorded by São Paulo (-5.0%). It is also worth mentioning the negative results of Minas Gerais (-5.0%), Northeast Region (-3.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (-5.1%), Paraná (-4.5%) and North and Central West Region (-3.4%).

By sector, also considering the monthly index of October 2014, total salaried employed persons recorded decrease in 16 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlights being means of transportation (-8.1%), machinery and equipment (-7.3%), food and beverages (-2.4%), metal products (-7.9%),communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-7.6%), footwear and leather (-8.9%), wearing apparel (-5.4%), other products from manufacturing industry (-6.7%) and basic metals (-6.5%). On the other hand, the main positive impact on the average of industry came from the subsectors of chemicals (0.9%) and non-metallic mineral products (0.4%).

In terms of the cumulative index of the first ten months of 2014, industrial employment recorded decrease of 3.0%, with negative rates in 13 of the 14 areas and in 16 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. Among the areas, São Paulo (-4.1%) registered the main negative impact on the industry overall, being followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-4.3%), Paraná (-4.2%), Minas Gerais (-2.5%), Northeast Region (-1.7%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.5%) and North and Central West Region (-1.1%). Pernambuco, with increase of 0.6%, on the other hand, accounted for the only positive contribution. By sector, also in terms of the cumulative index in the year, the most relevant negative contributions came from metal products (-7.1%), machinery and equipment (-5.5%), means of transportation (-5.0%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-6.9%), footwear and leather (-8.0%), wearing apparel (-3.3%), textiles (-4.5%), other products from manufacturing industry (-4.1%) and oil refining and alcohol production (-7.7%). On the other hand, the main positive impact on the average of industry came from chemicals (1.5%) and non-metallic mineral products (0.9%).

Number of hours paid is 0.8% smaller in October

In October 2014, the number of hours paid to industry workers, in the seasonally adjusted series, fell by 0.8% in the comparison with the immediately previous month, representing the sixth consecutive negative rate, with cumulative loss of 4.1%. With these results, the quarterly moving average index recorded change of 0.6% in the quarter which ended in October 2014 in comparison with the level reached in the previous month, and has remained on an upward trend since May 2013.

In comparison with October 2013, the number of hours paid to industry workers decreased 5.0%, the 17th consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison, and the most significant since October 2009 (-5.3%). The cumulative index in the first 10 months of the year declined 3.6% in comparison with that of the same period a year ago. The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last twelve months, having changed from -3.1% in September to -3.3% in October 2014, has remained on a downward trend since September 2013 (-1.0%).

In October 2014, the number of hours paid decreased 5.0% versus that of the same month a year ago, with widespread decrease, since all the 14 areas and 15 of the 18 subsectors surveyed recorded negative rates. By subsector, the main negative contributions came from machinery and equipment (-8.8%), food and beverages (-3%), means of transportation (-7.9%) and electronic machinery and communication equipment (-8.5%), wearing apparel (-5.8%), other products from manufacturing industry (-6.5%) and basic metals (-6.8%). On the other hand, the subsectors of chemicals (0.9%), non-metallic mineral products (0.2%) and tobacco (5.4%) recorded the main positive impacts in the month.

Among the areas, also in comparison with the same month a year ago, São Paulo (-5.9%) represented the main negative influence. It is also worth mentioning the negative results of Northeast Region (-5.4%), Minas Gerais (-5.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (-5.3%), Paraná (-4.8%) and North and Central West Region (-3.7%).

Considering the cumulative index in ten months of 2014, there was decrease of 3.6% in terms of the number of hours paid, with 16 of the 18 subsectors surveyed recording decrease. The most relevant negative impacts were observed in the fields of metal products (-8.3%), machinery and equipment (-6.8%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-9.0%), means of transportation (-5.9%), footwear and leather (-8.7%), wearing apparel (-3.7%) and textiles (-5.3%). Non-metallic mineral products (1.2%) and chemicals (1.0%) accounted for the positive contributions to the number of hours paid to industry workers. At regional level, all the fourteen areas surveyed recorded negative rates, the main highlight being the 4.8% decline registered by São Paulo, and followed by significant decreases in rio Grande do Sul (-5.4%), Paraná (-5.1%), Minas Gerais (-3.2%) and Northeast Region (-2.7%).

Real payroll increased 1.1% in August

In October 2014, the seasonally-adjusted real payroll of industry increased 1.1% in comparison with that of the previous month, recovering part of the 1.3% decline registered last September. It is worth mentioning this month shows the positive influence of manufacturing industry (1.1%), since the mining and quarrying sector presents decrease of 0.6%. Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index recorded positive change 0f 0.1% in the quarter which ended in October 2014, versus the level reached in the previous month. It stopped a downward trend which had started last February.

Na comparação com outubro de 2013, o valor da folha de pagamento real recuou 2,3%, quinta taxa negativa consecutiva neste tipo de confronto. Com isso, o valor da folha de pagamento real assinalou variação negativa de 0,3% no índice acumulado dos dez meses do ano. A taxa anualizada, índice acumulado nos últimos 12 meses, ao mostrar recuo de 0,8%, apontou o resultado negativo mais intenso desde abril de 2010 (-1,1%) e permaneceu com a trajetória descendente iniciada em janeiro último (1,6%).

It is also worth mentioning the negative contributions from Rio Grande do Sul (-4.8%), Minas Gerais (-3.6%), Northeast Region (-3.9%), Paraná (-2.7%). The main positive contributions, however were recorded by North and Central West Region (0.9%) and Espírito Santo (1.4%).

By subsector, also regarding the monthly index of October 2014, real payroll in the country decreased in 15 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlights being means of transportation (-5.5%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-7.9%), metal products (-6.9%), food and beverages (-1.3%), rubber and plastic (-3.7%), basic metals (-3.4%) and footwear and leather (-6.6%). However, positive impacts were observed in the sectors of chemicals (1.8%), paper and printing (2.3%) and non-metallic mineral products (1.6%).

In terms of the cumulative index in ten months in 2014, real payroll decreased 0.3%, with negative rates in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative impact on the industry overall was recorded by São Paulo (-0.8%). It is also worth mentioning, despite the smaller relevance, the decreases observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-1.9%), Northeast Region (-1.0%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.7%) and Ceará (-1.8%). On the contrary, the main positive contribution was that of the North and Central West Region (3.2%), followed by Santa Catarina (1.6%).

By subsector, also in terms of the cumulative index, real payroll increased in 10 of the 18 activities surveyed, mainly due to decreases observed in communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-5.7%), metal products (-4.7%), means of transportation (-1.4%) and machinery and equipment (-1.9%). On the other hand, the sectors of food and beverages (2.8%), non-metallic mineral products (4.2%), rubber and plastic products (2.1%) and chemicals (1.3%), represented the main negative contributions to the cumulative index in the first ten months of the year.
