October 08, 2014 09h00 AM | Last Updated: February 21, 2018 11h38 AM

Acceleration of the national industrial output from July to August, in the seasonally adjusted series, was observed in ten of the 14 areas surveyed, the main highlights being Rio Grande do Sul (4.2%), Goiás (3.3%) and Espírito Santo (3.2%). Considering monthly results, the first area recorded increase of output for the second consecutive month (6.0%); the second one eliminated the decrease of 2.0% recorded last July; the third area had cumulative increase of 11.2% in three consecutive months of positive rates. Ceará (2.8%), Pernambuco (2.7%), Paraná (2.1%), Pará (2.0%) and São Paulo (0.8%) also recorded more significant positive rates than the national average (0.7%), whereas Santa Catarina (0.5%) and Minas Gerais (0.1%) had slighter increases. On the other hand, Amazonas (-4.5%), Bahia (-4.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.6%) and the Northeast Region (-1.2%) recorded negative rates this month after having increased in the previous one: 16.6%, 4.1%, 1.1% and 5.6%, respectively.

* Seasonally adjusted series

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the total of industry recorded negative change of 0.1% in the quarter which ended in August in comparison with the figure in the previous month, after also recording negative results in April (-0.3%), May (-0.6%), June (-1.0%) and July (-0.6%). In regional terms, also considering the marginal movement of this index, seven areas presented negative rates, the main highlights being São Paulo (-0.7%), Pernambuco (-0.5%), Bahia (-0.4%) and Minas Gerais (-0.4%). On the other hand, Espírito Santo (3.6%), Rio de Janeiro (1.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.1%) and Ceará (1.0%) recorded the most significant positive results in August 2014.

The comparison with the same month in the previous year shows decrease of 5.4% in August 2014, with a widespread presence of negative results in regional terms, since 11 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded decrease of output. It is worth mentioning that August 2014 (21 days) had one business day less than the same month in the previous year (22). In the month, the most significant decreases were recorded by Paraná (-10.3%), Bahia (-9.7%), São Paulo (-8.6%) and Amazonas (-8.0%), mainly due to the reduced production of the following subsectors: motor vehicles, trailers and trunks and food products (crystallized and VHP sugar, animal food, chocolate candy and bars), in the first place; motor vehicles, trailers and trunks ( cars), in the second; motor vehicles, trailed cars and trunks (cars, trucks, tractor-trucks for trailers and semi-trailers and car pieces) in the third one; and computer equipment, electronic and optical products ( television sets, mobile telephones, radio for motor vehicles and watches ), other transportation equipment ( motorcycles, pieces and accessories) and beverages ( preparations in syrup for the elaboration of beverages for industrial use ), in the last one. Rio Grande do Sul (-7.4%), Santa Catarina (-6.0%) and Minas Gerais (-5.5%) also recorded more significant decreases in relation to the national average (-5.4%), whereas the Northeast Region (-4.1%), Ceará (-1.3%), Pernambuco (-1.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.7%) completed the group of areas with negative rates. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (13.7%) had the most significant increase in the month, mainly affected by the positive performance of the mining and quarrying sector (pelletized iron ore and crude petroleum oil). The other positive results came from Pará (6.0%), Goiás (3.7%) and Mato Grosso (0.1%).

In the cumulative indicator for the January-August period in 2014, in comparison with the same period as in the previous year, decrease of the national output affected nine of the 15 areas surveyed, with four of them facing decreases above the national average of industry (-3.1%): São Paulo (-5.7%), Paraná (-5.6%), Bahia (-5.3%) and rio Grande do Sul (-5.3%). Rio de Janeiro (-3.0%), Santa Catarina (-2.4%), Minas Gerais (-1.9%), Ceará (-1.5%) and Northeast Region (-0.9%) completed the group of areas with negative results in the end of eight months of 2014. In these areas, the lower dynamism was especially influenced by factors related to the reduction in the output of capital goods (especially those aimed at transportation equipment - tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, trucks and vehicles for transportation of goods), intermediate goods (car pieces, textiles, steel products, metal products, basic petrochemicals, thermoplastic resins and pesticides) and durable consumer goods (cars, white goods, motorcycles and furniture). On the contrary, Pará (10.6%), Pernambuco (2.1%), Amazonas (1.7%), Espírito Santo (1.6%), Mato Grosso (1.1%) and Goiás (0.5%) recorded positive rates in the cumulative index in the year.

The annualized rate, the cumulative indicator in the last 12 months, having decreased 1.8% in August 2014, has remained on an upward trend since last March (2.0%) and recorded the most significant negative result since December 2012 (-2.3%). In regional terms, eight of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative rates in August this year and ten faced lower dynamism in relation to the index of last July. The main losses between July and August were recorded by Bahia (from -1.7% to -3.1%), Paraná (from -1.0% to -2.3%), Ceará (from 3.4% to 2.2%0, Rio Grande do Sul (from 0.2% to -1.0%), Amazonas (from 5.3% to 4.4%) and São Paulo 9-2.7% to -3.6%), whereas Espírito Santo (from -1.4% to 0.3%) accounted for the main increase between the two periods.
