Revenue from services increased 4.6% in July

In July, the Brazilian services sector recorded nominal increase of 4.6% in comparison with that in the same month a year ago, below the rates recorded in June (5.8%) and May (6.6%). This result is the lowest since the beginning of the series. Services rendered to families grew 5.4%, Information and communication services, 2.1%, Professional, administrative and complementary services, 7.0%, Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, 4.6% and Other services, 8.3%. Cumulative nominal increase in the year and in 12 months presented rates of 7.0% and 7.6%, respectively, which were also the lowest rates in the series.

The Monthly Survey of Services (PMS) is the first short-term indicator which investigates the services sector in Brazil. It encompasses the activities of non-financial business segments, except for the sectors of health, education, public administration and imputed rent (the amount owners would earn in case they rented the properties they live in). The main contribution to the result of July was that of Information and communication services, which changed 2.1%, versus 5.7% in June and 4.4% in May. The second biggest impact was that of transportation, auxiliary services to transportation and mailing, which recorded change of 4.6% in July, versus 4.7% in July and 7.5% in May.

Services rendered to families recorded, in Brazil, change of 5.4% in july over the same month a year ago, a lower result than those of June (11.1%) and May (11.6%). With reference to cumulative figures, results were 10.6% in the year and in the last 12 months. The activities which form this segment presented the following results: 6.1%, lodging and feeding services and 1.3%, other services rendered to families . In relative terms. service-rendering companies accounted for 8.7% and, in absolute figures, for 0.4 percentage points to the composition of the overall index.

Information and communication services recorded increase of 2.1%, below the June and May rates, of 5.7% and 4.4%, respectively. Cumulative results were: 5.1%, in the year, and 5.8%, in the last 12 months. . Information and communication technology services - ICT, which encompass telecommunications and information technology, recorded change of 2.1%, and audiovisual, publishing and news agency services , of 2.2%. The segment Information and communication services accounted for a relative contribution of 15.2% in the month, and of 0.7 percentage points in the composition of the overall index.

Professional, administrative and complementary services increased by 7.0%, versus 7.3% in June and 7.8% in May. In terms of cumulative figures, results were 7.7% for the first seven month of the year, and 7.8% for the last 12 months. Technical professional services, which encompass knowledge-intensive services, changed 4.8%, and administrative and complementary services, which encompass labor-intensive services, 7.8%. With relative contribution of 32.6%, this segment presented, in absolute terms, 1.5 percentage points, in the formation of the overall index.

The segment ofTransportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities recorded nominal increase of 12.4% in July, in the comparison with the same month in the previous year, above the rates recorded in June (10.1%) and May (9.9%). In relation to cumulative results, change rates were: 8.0% cumulative in the first seven months of the year and 9.0% in the last 12 months. Among the activities, three recorded positive results: road transportation (4.3%), waterway transportation (2.3%) and storage services and support activities for transportation and mailing activities, with 8.4%. air transportation was the only item facing decrease, -2.5%. The segment of transportation, auxilary services to transportation and mailing activities accounts, in relative figures, for 32.6% and, in absolute figures, for 1.5 percentage points of the general index.

In the specific case of road transportation and air transportation, the rates of July and June, below the one in May, resulted from the smaller number of business days in comparison with the previous month, due to the holidays for the Soccer World Cup. This event caused road transportation , mainly considering transportation of cargo, to have reduced demand from other economic sectors, and air transportation, significant decrease in the number of business trips.

The segment other services recorded increase rate of 8.3%, higher than the changes of June (1.1%) and May (5.6%). The cumulative rates relative to seven months and to the last 12 months reached, respectively, 5.9% and 6.5%.

In July, 19 states recorded positive changes

Among the 27 Federation Units, 19 recorded positive changes in relation to figures in July 2013. The highlights were: Distrit Federal (20.1%), Santa Catarina 98.8%) and Rio de Janeiro, with 8.5%. The main nominal changes came from: Espírito Santo (-6.4%), Roraima (-5.8%) and Amapá (-4.6%).
