September 05, 2014 09h00 AM | Last Updated: February 21, 2018 01h00 PM

The pace of increase of the national industrial output, between June and July, in the seasonally adjusted series, was seen in 11 of the 14 places surveyed, with a highlight to the sharpest advances marked by Amazonas (16.1%), Paraná (7.3%) and Ceará (7.1%). The first state interrupted three consecutive months of output drop - a period in which it accumulated a loss of 19.9%; the second place offset part of the 8.1% reduction registered in the previous month; and the third area eliminated the 6.6% decrease seen last June. The Northeast Region (5.6%), Bahia (4.7%), Santa Catarina (4.0%), Espírito Santo (3.6%), Pernambuco (3.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.2%) also registered positive changes above the national average (0.7%), while Minas Gerais, up 0.5%, recorded a more moderate advance. On the other hand, Goiás (-2.2%), São Paulo (-1.2%) and Pará (-0.8%) posted the negative rates this month and fell for the second consecutive month in this kind of comparison, accumulating in this period losses of -2.6%, -2.6% and -2.7%, respectively.

*Seasonally Adjusted Series

In the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average for the industry overall fell 0.5% in the quarter ended in July over the previous month's level, after registering negative results in April (-0.4%), May (-0.7%) and June (-0.9%). By areas, still in relation to the movement of the index on margin, 11 places registered negative rates, with a highlight to the losses in Bahia (-1,7%), Pernambuco (-1,5%), Northeast Region (-1,1%), Pará (-0,9%), Rio Grande do Sul (-0,7%), Amazonas (-0,7%) and São Paulo (-0,6%). On the other hand, Espírito Santo (2.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (2.0%) posted the sharpest negative results in July 2014.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the national industrial sector fell 3.6% in July 2014, with a widespread fall by area, since 13 of the 15 places surveyed contracted their production. This month, the sharpest drops were seen in Rio Grande do Sul (-10.6%), Bahia (-7.5%), Paraná (-6.4%) and São Paulo (-5.8%), pushed to a great extent by the losses in motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars, trailers and semi-trailers, bodies for buses and axles and semi-axles for transmission in motor vehicles), in the first area; in motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars), in the second; in motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars, trucks and tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers) in the third place; and in motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars and trucks) and in machinery and equipment (capital goods for industrial, agricultural and construction purposes) in the last place. Pernambuco (-4.3%) and Minas Gerais (-3.7%) also registered sharper drops than the national average (-3.6%). Goiás (-3.2%), the Northeast Region (-3.1%), Santa Catarina (-2.7%), Pará (-1.7%), Amazonas (-1.5%), Ceará (-1.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%) completed the set of places with negative rates. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (10.3%) and Mato Grosso (4.8%) recorded advance this month, leveraged to a great extent by the positive behavior of the mining and quarrying industries (pelletized iron ore and crude petroleum oil) and of basic metals (carbon steel hot-rolled coils), in the first place and of food products (cake and residue of soybean oil extraction and crude soybean oil) and other chemicals (manure or fertilizers), in the second.

In the cumulative indicator for the January-July period of 2014, over the same period a year ago, the reduction in the national production reached 11 of the 15 places surveyed, with five places shrinking above the industry average (-2.8%): São Paulo (-5.2%), Bahia (-5.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.9%), Paraná (-4.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (-3.3%). Santa Catarina (-1.8%), Ceará (-1.5%), Minas Gerais (-1.3%), the Northeast Region (-0.5%), Goiás (-0.4%) and Espírito Santo (-0.2%) completed the set of places with negative results in the end of the seven first months of 2014. In these places, the lowest dynamism was particularly influenced by the reduction of the production of capital goods (especially those related to transportation equipment - tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, trucks and vehicles for the transportation of goods), intermediate goods (auto parts, textiles, steel products, metal products, basic petrochemicals, thermoplastic resins and agrochemicals) and durable consumer goods (cars, "white goods", motorcycles and furniture). On the other hand, Pará (10.9%), Amazonas (3.3%), Pernambuco (2.6%) and Mato Grosso (1.1%) recorded the positive rates in the cumulative index of the year.

The annualized rate, cumulative indicator over the last 12 months, with a drop of 1.2% in July 2014, kept the downward trend begun last March (2.0%) and recorded the highest negative result since January 2013 (-1.5%). By area, eight of the fifteen places surveyed recorded negative rates in July this year and 13 registered a lower dynamism over the index of last June. The major losses between June and July were recorded by Amazonas (7.8% to 5.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.5% to 0.3%), Bahia (-0.1% to -2.0%), Ceará (4.7% to 3.4%), the Northeast Region (1.0% to -0.1%) and Paraná (0.0% to -1.0%), whereas Espírito Santo (-3.0% to -1.4%) and Mato Grosso (3.7% to 4.2%) advanced between the two periods.
