In June 2014, the number of hours paid to industrial workers, discounted the seasonal influences, contracted 1.2% against the previous month - the second consecutive negative rate, accumulating in this period a loss of 2.1%. As a result, the quarterly moving average index fell 0.7% in the quarter ended in June 2014 against the previous month’s result and kept the downward trend initiated in May 2013. Considering the seasonally adjusted series, quarter over quarter, the number of hours paid in the industry fell 1.2% in the April/June period of 2014 – the fourth consecutive negative rate in this kind of comparison, and showed a sharper pace of decline than the ones seen in the last quarter in the previous year (-0.7%) and in the first one this year (-0.4%).

The number of hours paid to industrial workers, shrinking 4.2% in the monthly index of June 2014, recorded the thirteenth consecutive negative rate in this kind of comparison and the sharpest one since October 2009 (-5,3%). In the comparisons against the same periods in the previous year, the total number of hours paid recorded losses either in the end of the second quarter of 2014 (-3.6%) and in the cumulative index over the first six months of the year (-2.9%). The annualized rate (cumulative index over the last 12 months), moving from -2.0% in February to -2.3% in June 2014, kept the downward trend initiated in September 2013 (-1.0%).

In June, the number of hours paid fell 4.2% in relation to June 2013, with drops in the fourteen places surveyed and in sixteen of the eighteen sectors. The main negative influences came from means of transportation (-8.6%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatuses (-10.6%), machinery and equipment (-5.8%), fabricated metal products (-6.9%), footwear and leather (-8.6%), food and beverages (-1.6%), textiles (-7.5%), wearing apparel (-4.2%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.8%). Conversely, the positive impacts came from non-metallic mineral products (0.9%) and chemicals (0.7%).

Also in relation to June 2013, the main negative influence is due to the drop in São Paulo (-5.3%), with reduction in the hours paid in means of transportation (-9.8%), machinery and equipment (-7.5%), textiles (-14.0%), fabricated metal products (-9.8%), food and beverages (-3.1%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatuses (-5.8%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-9.9%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-7.0%). Other highlights are the negative impacts from Rio Grande do Sul (-5.9%), Paraná (-5.5%), Minas Gerais (-3.7%) and the Northeast Region (-3.3%).

The cumulative index of the year shrank 2.9% in the number of hours paid, with  drops in fourteen of the eighteen sectors surveyed. The sharpest negative impacts were seen in communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-9.5%), fabricated metal products (-7.4%), machinery and equipment (-5.9%), means of transportation (- 4.6%), footwear and leather (-7.9%) and textiles (-6.2%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contribution to the total number of hours paid to the industry workers came from food and beverages (0.5%) and non-metallic mineral products (1.7%). Concerning the areas, thirteen of the fourteen places presented negative rates, with a highlight to the contraction of 4.3% observed in São Paulo, followed by the losses in Rio Grande do Sul (-5.3%), Paraná (-4.6%), the Northeast Region (-2.6%) and the Northeast Region (-2.1%). On the other hand, the North and the Central-West Regions (0.6%) recorded the most relevant positive rate in the first six months of 2014.

Summing up, the total of salaried employed persons and the number of hours paid in the industry kept the lower intensity behavior, with the former accumulating a loss of 1.6% in three months in a row of negative rates, and the latter recording the sharpest negative rate since January 2009 (-1.5%). It is worth highlighting that these results reflect, particularly, the pace decelaration that has stricken the industrial production since the last quarter of 2013. The evolution of the quarterly moving average proves it right.

In relation to June 2013, the salaried employed persons and the number of hours paid in the industry kept the negative rates and the more intense losses since November and October 2009, respectively. Thus, the cumulative index in 2014 kept the negative behavior and intensified the pace of decline over the results of the second semester last year, both the comparisons against the same period a year ago, either in the total of salaried employed persons, which came from -1.5% to -2.3%, or in the number of hours paid (from -1.7% to -2.9%), following the down movement also observed in the industrial output (from -1.2% to -2.6%).
