April 08, 2014 09h00 AM | Last Updated: August 20, 2018 12h27 PM

Acceleration of national industrial production from January to February, in the seasonally adjusted series, was recorded in seven of the 14 areas surveyed, the main highlights being the two-digit expansion of Paraná (18.4%) and the increase (4.7%) in Amazonas. Considering this month's result, the former place eliminated the 15.9% loss recorded between November and January 2014; the latter completed two consecutive months of positive rates, having recorded cumulative increase of 7.7% in the period. Rio de Janeiro (1.0%), Goiás (0.8%), São Paulo (0.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.5%) and Santa Catarina (0.5%) completed the group of areas with positive rates, whereas Pará had null change (0.0%). On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-4.3%), after recording increase of 2.2% in the previous month, and Pernambuco (-3.9%), which reversed four months of positive rates in a row, accounted for the most significant changes in February 2014. Northeast Region (-1.7%), Ceará (-1.6%), Minas Gerais (-1.6%) and Bahia (-1.2%) also recorded negative rates.

* Seasonally-adjusted series

Also in the series with seasonal adjustment, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall increased 0.1% in the quarter which ended in February in comparison with the previous month, interrupting the downward trend in progress since November last year. In regional terms, also in relation to the marginal movement of this index, six areas recorded positive rates in the month: Amazonas (2.2%), Pernambuco (1.1%), Northeast Region (0.8%), Bahia (0.4%), Santa Catarina (0.4%) and Paraná (0.2%). On the other hand, Espírito Santo (2.0%), Rio grande do Sul (-1.1%), Minas Gerais (-1.1%), Ceará (-1.0%0, São paulo (-0.6%), Goiás (-0.3%) and Pará (-0.3%) recorded negative results in February 2014, whereas Rio de Janeiro had null change (0.0%).

In the comparison with the same month in the preceding year, increases in the national output were observed, in February 2014, in 12 of the 14 areas surveyed. It is worth mentioning the influence of the calendar effect, since February this year had two business days more (20) than the same month in the previous year (18). In the month, the main increases were recorded in Paraná (17.7%) and Amazonas (15.0%), mainly affected by the positive behavior of the sectors of motor vehicles (trucks, cars, and tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers), publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media (books, brochures or printed teaching material) and machinery and equipment (machinery and equipment for the sector of cellulose and agricultural tractors), in the former; and communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (television sets), food and beverages (syrup preparations for the elaboration of beverages), medical, optical and other equipment (watches) and other transportation equipment (motorcycles and its parts), in the later. Minas Gerais (9.5%), Pernambuco (7.3%) and Ceará (5.9%) also recorded more significant increases than the national average (5.0%), whereas Pará 94.1%, Northeast Region 93.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.9%), Santa Catarina 91.8%), São Paulo (0.3%), Rio de Janeiro (0.1%0 and Bahia (0.15) completed the group of areas with positive rates in February 2014. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-3.6%) and Goiás (-2.6%) accounted for the negative results in the month.

Considering the cumulative indicator in the first two months of the year, the expansion of national output reached nine of the 14 areas surveyed, with seven of them increasing above the national average (1.3%): Pernambuco (8.3%), Amazonas (6.0%), Northeast Region (2.9%), Pará (2.7%), Minas Gerais (2.5%), Paraná (2.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.0%). Santa Catarina (8.3%) and Ceará (0.8%) complete the group of areas with positive rates in the cumulative index of the first two months of 2014. In these areas, the increased dynamism was particularly influenced by factors related to the bigger output of capital goods (for transportation, construction, industrial use and agriculture) and of and durable consumer goods (brown goods, motorcycles and mobile telephones), besides the bigger output of the sectors of wearing apparel and accessories, food products ad oil refining and production of ethanol. On the contrary, São Paulo (-2.4%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%) and Espírito Santo (-2.2%) recorded the most significant rates, reflecting mainly the smaller production of motor vehicles, oil refining and production of ethanol, other chemicals, publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media and metal products, in the first area; of pharmaceuticals, mining and quarrying industry, publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media, basic metals and motor vehicles, in the second area; and of mining and quarrying industry, in the last one. Other negative figures came from: Goiás (-0.8%) and Bahia (-0.1%).

The signs of acceleration in production were also clear in the comparison between the last quarter of 2013 with the result of the first two months of 2014, being both comparisons against equivalent periods in the preceding year, when 9 of the 14 areas surveyed accelerated, following the national index, which changed from -0.3% in Q4 2013 to 1.3% in the cumulative index of the first two months this year. In this type of comparison, Amazonas (from -3.0% to 6.0%), Pernambuco (from 3.4% to 8.3%), minas Gerais (from -2.4% to 2.5%), Espírito Santo (from -4.8% to -2.2%) and Bahia (from -1.9% to -0.1%) recorded the main increases, whereas Rio Grande do Sul (from 11.4% to 2.0%), Paraná 9from 10.5% to 2.3%0 and Goiás (from 5.3% to -0.8%) accounted for the main instances of deceleration between the two periods.
