Agricultural products: soybeans, tobacco products and orange present the greatest drops

The sector of industrial products from agriculture decreased 2.4%, with negative rates in four of the eight surveyed groups. The negative contributions came from soybean products (-8.5%), negatively influenced by the drop in the exportation of the bagasse and other residues from soybean oil extraction and crude soybean oil, pulp (-2.5%), orange (-16.1%), due to the crop decrease, and tobacco (-7.4%), pushed by the export drops. Conversely, sugarcane products advanced 4.4%, leveraged by the bigger sugarcane crop and by the rise in the ethanol production (16.5%). It is worth mentioning the advances coming from wheat (8.7%), corn (4.2%) and rice (1.0%), mostly attributable to the crop growth.

The industrial products used in agriculture grew 5.9% in 2013, pushed to a great extent by the manufacture of machinery and equipment (16.1%), since manure and fertilizers recorded a more moderate advance (0.2%).

Livestock Products grow 2.3% in 2013

The industrial products from livestock farming grew 2.3% in 2013, reflecting the advances recorded by poultry products (11.1%), influenced to a great extent by the low base of comparison, since this group had already fallen 4.5% in 2012, and of leather and fur (6.3%), mostly pressed by the export growth. On the other hand, the negative impacts came from cattle and pig farming (-5.7%), led by the export drops for pigs and hogs (especially for Ukraine, which has embargoed Brazilian meat), and of milk (-3.2%).

The sector of industrial products used in agriculture fell 5.0% in 2013, influenced  both by the output reduction in animal feed and vitamin supplements (-3.5%), of a greater weight in the group, and by the 13.4% drop in veterinary products.

The Brazilian agriculture industry posted a negative change of 0.2% in 2013, after also dropping in 2012 (-0.6%) and recorded a result below that of the general industry in 2013 (1.2%), all comparisons against the same periods in the previous year. The sectors related to agriculture (-1.3%), of a greater weight in the agriculture industry, pushed it down, whereas the activities related to livestock farming (0.7%): the group of pesticides, herbicides and other agrochemicals (3.9%) and the sector of wood splitting (10.8%), recorded the positive impacts. In a quarterly basis, the agrobusiness overall posted a decrease of 5.5% in the first three months of 2013, grew 6.4% in the April-June period, and fell again in Q3 (-1.1%) and Q4 (-1.0%), all comparisons against the same periods in the previous year.

The slight negative change in the agrobusiness output is mostly due to the drop of the industrial products derived from agriculture (-2.4%). Conversely, the main positive impacts in 2013 came from insecticides, pesticides and other agrochemicals (3.9%), from wood splitting (10.8%), from machinery and equipment (16.1%) and from poultry porducts (11.1%).
