Industrial employment changes 0.1% in October

In October 2013, the total of industrial employees registered a positive change of 0.1% against the level of the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, interrupting five months of negative rates in a row in this kind of comparison. In this period the index accumulated a loss of 1.8%. Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average registered a negative change of 0.3% in the quarter ended in October over the level of the previous month and kept the downward trend started last April. The industrial employment declined 1.7% in October 2013, the twenty-fifth consecutive negative result in this kind of comparison and the sharpest since September 2012 (-1.9%).  In the cumulative index over the ten months of 2013, the total of salaried employed persons in the industry marked a decrease of 1.0%. The annualized rate, cumulative index over the last twelve months, reducing 1.0% in October 2013, repeated the results of last August and September. Comparing with the same month last year, the industrial employment receded 1.7% in October 2013, with the contingent of employees recording reduction in 12 of the 14 places surveyed.  The main negative impact over the overall average was seen in the Northeast Region (-5.1%), followed by São Paulo (-1.7%), Bahia (-6.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.8%) and Pernambuco (-5.7%). On the other hand, the North and Central-West Regions and Santa Catarina, both advancing 0.4% in October 2013, recorded positive contributions to the industrial employment in the country.

By sector, concerning the monthly index of October 2013, the total of salaried employed persons decreased in 13 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to the negative pressures coming from fabricated metal products (- 5,7%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (- 5,1%), machinery and equipment  (-3.5%),  footwear and leather (-5.2%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-3,8%), textiles (-3,6%) and petroleum refining and ethanol production (-6.3%). On the other hand, the main positive impacts on the industry average were seen in the sectors of rubber and plastic (2.9%) and  means of transportation (1.2%).

In the cumulative index in the January/October period in 2013, industrial employment posted a drop of 1.0%, with negative rates in 11 of the 14 places and in 11 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the places, the Northeast Region (-4.7%) marked the main negative impact in the industry overall, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-2.2%), São Paulo (-0.6%), Pernambuco (-7.1%) and Bahia (-5.7%)  On the other hand, Santa Catarina (1.0%) exerted the most important positive pressure on the cumulative index over the ten months of the year.

By sector, in the cumulative index of the year, the most relevant negative contributions to the national average came from footwear and leather (-5.3%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-4.0%), apparel (-2.9%), textiles (-3.8%) and machinery and equipment (-2.1%), whereas the sectors of food and beverages (1.3%) and of rubber and plastic (3.1%) exerted the major positive influences.

Number of hours paid is 0.3% higher than in September

In October 2013, the number of hours paid to industrial workers, discounted the seasonal influences, advanced 0.3% against the previous month, after registering five consecutive negative rates. In this period, there was a cumulative loss of 2.9%.  With these results, the quarterly moving average index, contracting 0.4% in the quarter ended in October in relation to the previous month's result, kept the downward trend started last May.

In the comparison with October 2012, the number of hours paid declined 2.0%, the fifth consecutive negative result in this kind of analysis and the sharpest since last February (-2.3%).  In the cumulative index over the ten months of the year, the total number of hours paid posted a decrease of 1.1%. The annualized rate, cumulative index over the last twelve months, reducing 1.1% in October 2013, practically repeated the results of July (-1.2%), August (- 1.1%) and September (-1.0%).

In October 2013, the number of hours paid fell 2.0% in relation to the same month a year ago, with negative rates in 12 of the 14 places and in 16 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the sectors, the main negative influences came from fabricated metal products (-6.1%), footwear and leather (-6.2%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-5.3%), machinery and equipment (-3.3%), textiles (-4.9%), food and beverages (-0.9%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.4%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contribution this month came from rubber and plastic (3.3%).  Among the places, as compared to the same month a year ago, the Northeast Region (-6.0%) marked the main negative influence on the country’s overall in October 2013, followed by São Paulo (-1.9%), Minas Gerais (-2.9%), Pernambuco (-7.9%), Bahia (-6.1%), and Paraná (-2.2%). On the other hand, the North and Central-West Regions (0.9%) and Santa Catarina (0.8%) exerted the positive impacts on the total number of hours paid.

In the cumulative index (January to October 2013), against the same period a year ago, there was a downturn of 1.1% in the number of hours paid, with 11 of the 18 sectors surveyed reporting negative rates. The most relevant negative impacts on the global average of the industry were seen in the segments of footwear and leather (-7.1%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-4.4%), textiles (-4.7%) machinery and equipment (-2.7%), wearing apparel (-3.1%) fabricated metal products (-2.4%) and wood (- 5.4%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contribution to the total number of hours paid to the total of hours paid came from food and beverages (1.4%) and rubber and plastic (2.9%).  By regions, in the cumulative index of the year, 11 of the 14 places surveyed recorded negative rates, with a highlight to the drop of 4.9% registered by the Northeast Region, followed by the losses in Rio Grande do Sul (-2.5%), Pernambuco (-7.2%), Bahia (-6.2%) and São Paulo (-0.4%). Conversely, Santa Catarina (0.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.5%) and the North and Central-West Regions (0.1%) registered the positive influences of the cumulative index over the ten months of the year.

Real Payroll shrinks 0.8% in October

In October 2013, the value of the real payroll of the industrial workers, seasonally adjusted, shrank 0.8% against the previous month, partly offsetting the advance of 1.6% seen in September. It should be noted that  there is a clear influence of the 0.9% drop registered by the manufacturing industry, since the mining and quarrying sector reported advance (5.2%). In the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall presented a 0.6% fall between the quarters closed in September and October, and kept the downward trend started last July.

Contrasting with the same month of the previous year, the real payroll rose by 1.2% in October 2013 (the second consecutive positive result), but at a much slower pace than the one observed last month (2.5%). In the cumulative index over the ten months of the year, there was an expansion of 2.3%. The annualized rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), expanding 3.7% in October 2013, got very close to the results of May (3.9%), June (3.8%), July (3.9%), August (3.7%) and September (3.8%).

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the value of the real payroll recorded an expansion of 1.2% in October 2013, with positive results in 10 of the 14 places surveyed. The main positive influences on the national overall were seen in Rio Grande do Sul (4.5%), São Paulo (0.8%), Santa Catarina (5.1%), North and Central-West Regions (4.0%), Paraná (1.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.2%). In contrast, the most relevant negative contributions came from Minas Gerais (-1.9%), the Northeast Region (-1.2%) and Pernambuco (-4.9%).

Among the sectors, still in the monthly index of October 2013, the value of the real payroll for the whole country grew in 12 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to food and beverages (4.3%), mining and quarrying industries (6.5%), chemicals (3.2%), rubber and plastic (4.0%), non-metallic minerals (2.7%)and wearing apparel (2.4%). On the other hand, the sharpest negative impacts were seen fabricated metal products (-3.1%), machinery and equipment (-1.2%) and means of transportation (-0.8%).

In the cumulative indicator of 2013, the value of the real payroll rose by 2.3%, with positive rates in ten of the 14 places surveyed.  The major positive contribution to the industry overall was exerted by São Paulo (2.2%), followed by the North and Central-West Regions (4.5%), Rio de Janeiro (3.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.6%), Minas Gerais (1.9%) and Paraná (2.5%). Conversely, the negative impacts were caused by the Northeast Region (-0.8%), Pernambuco (-3.8%), Bahia (-1.1%) and Espírito Santo (-0.6%).

Among the sectors, considering the cumulative index of the year, the value of the real payroll advanced in 13 of the 18 activities surveyed, leveraged particularly by the gains coming from food and beverages (4.6%), mining and quarrying industries (5.9%), chemicals (4.8%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (4.3%), rubber and plastic (5.0%), machinery and equipment  (1,6%) and  means of transportation  (0.9%). On the other hand, the sectors of basic metals (-0.8%), wood (-1.9%) and wearing apparel (-0.6%) exerted the major negative influences on the national overall.
