IPCA of November stays at 0.54%

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) changed 0.54% in November and stood 0.03 percentage points below the rate registered in October (0.57%). In the cumulative index of 2013, the change was 4.95%, below the rate of 5.01% recorded in the same period of 2012. The cumulative rate in the last 12 months was at 5.77%, below that of the 12 previous months (5.84% ). In November 2012 the rate was at 0.60%.

The figures by groups of products and services surveyed are showed in the following table:

By rising 0.56% in November and 1.03% in October, food was responsible for the decline of IPCA between October and November Despite the rise of 1.08% in Fortaleza, the rate was lower in other areas, reaching 0.21% in Rio de Janeiro, 0.27% in Brasília and -0.04% in Curitiba.

Basic food in the typical Brazilian fare, rice (-1.04%) and beans (-7.96%) got cheaper. The following table shows the highlights:

Even among the products that became more expensive in November, some of them decelerated the rate, as can be seen below.

In addition to Food and Beverages, two other groups recorded rates below those posted in October: Household Articles (from 0.81% in October to 0.35% in November) and Wearing Apparel (from 1.13% to 0.85%).

In November, three items impacted the most, each one by 0.04 percentage points: domestic workers (0.97%), electricity (1.63%) and airfare (6.52%).

In addition to domestic workers in the group of Personal Expenses (from 0.43% in October to 0.87% in November), the item cigarettes stood out by rising 3.19%, reflecting the average adjustment of 13% in force since November 2 in some of the areas surveyed.

The group of Housing (from 0.56% in October to 0.69% in November) reported an increase of 1.63% in the electricity bills, due to fare adjustment of 4.64% on November 7 in the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro (2.83%); Porto Alegre (5.94%), where the fare was increased by 13.30% on October 25; and other areas like Brasília (6.18%), which reflected expressive changes of PIS/PASEP/COFINS. Besides the increase in the electricity fares, water and sewage fees (0.52%) also stood out as a result of the change of 5.84% in Rio de Janeiro, where the average adjustment was of 6.27% on November 1st.

Airfare rose 6.52%, pressing the group of Transportation, which increased from 0.17% in October to 0.36% in November. In addition to airfare, fuels registered a rise of 0.63% in the prices of gasoline and of 0.94% in the prices of ethanol.

As to the groups of Education (from 0.09% in October to 0.08% in November) and Health and Personal Care (from 0.39% to 0.41%), the figures were nearly the same from one month to the other.

The highest regional index was recorded in the metropolitan area of Fortaleza (0.99%), where the increase of food prices surpassed the national average and hit 1.08%. Salvador (0.39%) posted the lowest index in November. The table below shows the indexes by area surveyed.

 IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980. It refers to families with monthly income of one to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source, and it encompasses nine metropolitan areas in the country, besides the municipalities of Goiânia and Brasília. In order to estimate the index of the month, the prices collected from October 30 to November 27, 2013 (reference) were compared with the prices in force from October 1st to October 29, 2013 (base).

INCP changed 0.54% in November

The National Consumer Price Index - INPC recorded a change of 0.54% in November, 0.07 percentage points below the result of October (0.61%). As a consequence, the cumulative index in the year stayed at 4.81%, below the rate of 5.42% relative to the same period of 2012. Considering the last 12 months, the index stayed at 5.58%, the same change of the immediately previous 12 months. In November 2012, INPC was at 0.54%.

Food stayed at 0.54% in November, whereas the rate in October was 0.94%. The group of non-food products changed 0.54% in November against 0.47% in October.

The highest regional index was recorded in the metropolitan area of Fortaleza (1.10%), where the increase of food prices surpassed the national average and hit 1.18%. Salvador (0.35%) posted the lowest index in November. The table below shows the indexes by area surveyed.
