Industrial employment changes by -0.4% in September

In September 2013, the industrial employment recorded a drop of 0.4% against the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series - the fifth consecutive negative result in this kind of comparison, accumulating a loss of 1.7% in this period of time. As a result, the quarterly moving average registered a negative change of 0.4% in the quarter ended in September over the level of the previous month and kept the downward trend started last April.

Still in the seasonally adjusted series, in the quarter-on-quarter comparison, the industrial employment also recorded a drop of 0.9% in the third quarter of 2013, after registering negative rates in Q1 (-0.2%) and Q2 (-0.1%).

The industrial employment declined 1.4% in September 2013, the 24th consecutive negative result in this kind of comparison and the sharpest since September last year (-1.9%). 

Comparing to the same periods a year ago, the total of salaried employed persons shrunk either in the end of the third quarter of 2013 (-1.2%) and in the cumulative index of the first nine months of the year (-0.9%). The annualized rate (cumulative index over the last 12 months), shrinking 1.0% in September 2013, continued the slight downward trend in the pace of decline begun in February (-1.5%).

Comparing with the same month last year, the industrial employment shrank 1.4% in September 2013, with the contingent of employees recording reduction in 12 of the 14 places surveyed.  The main negative impact on the overall average was observed in the Northeast Region (-6.3%), pushed to a great extent by the negative rates recorded in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed. The highlight was the drop in the total number of the employed persons in the industries of food and beverages (-10.0%), footwear and leather (-8.0%), wearing apparel (-4.5%), non-metallic mineral products (-6.4%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (-11.6%), textiles (-5.6%), mining and quarrying industries (-8.1%), fabricated metal products (-5.7%) and rubber and plastic (-4.0%).

It is also worth mentioning the negative results in São Paulo (-0.8%), Bahia (-6.4%), Pernambuco (-6.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%) and Minas Gerais (-1.2%), with the first place mainly influenced by the drops seen in the sectors of fabricated metal products (-10.1%), machinery and equipment (-4.9%), textiles (-9.4%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-8.6%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (-8.4%) and paper and press (-3.2%); the second area was pushed down by the segments of footwear and leather (-25.6%), non-metallic mineral products (-17.7%), machinery and equipment (-6.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-10.8%), wearing apparel (-5.0%), wood  (-21.3%), fabricated metal products (-5.1%), basic metals (-6.6%) and mining and quarrying industries (-3.7%); the third place was influenced by the losses in food and beverages (-10.8%), rubber and plastic (-20.5%), wearing apparel (-6.5%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-9.3%), paper and press (-6.8%), textiles  (-10.2%), fabricated metal products (-7.7%) and non-metallic mineral products (-3.0%); the fourth, was affected by the drops in footwear and leather (-10.0%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-21.6%), wearing apparel (-13.0%), wood (-11,3%) and paper and press (-5,4%); and the last place was influenced by the activities of food and beverages (-2.4%), footwear and leather (-7.9%), rubber and plastic (-9.0%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-4.7%), fabricated metal products (-2.7%), other products of the manufacturing industry  (-3.9%), basic metals (-1.8%), wood (-11.3%) and apparel (-1,9%). On the other hand, Santa Catarina, increasing 1.0% in September 2013, posted the most relevant positive contribution to the industrial employment in the country, pushed to a great extent by machinery and equipment (6.0%), rubber and plastic (8.4%), fabricated metal products (8.2%) and food and beverages (2.1%).

By sector, concerning the monthly index of September 2013, the total of salaried employed persons decreased in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to the negative pressures coming from communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-5.7%), fabricated metal products (-4.3%), footwear and leather (-4.7%), textiles (-4.2%), machinery and equipment (-2.2%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.1%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (-6.2%),  wood (-5.7%) and  non-metallic mineral products  (-1.9%). On the other hand, the main positive impacts on the industry overall were seen in the sectors of rubber and plastic (4.8%), means of transportation (0.9%) and chemicals (1.4%).

In a quarterly analysis, the industrial employment, shrinking 1.2% in the third quarter of 2013, registered the eighth consecutive quarter of negative results, increasing the pace of decline over the second quarter of the year (-0.5%) - all comparisons against the same period last year. Between the two periods, 11 of the 18 sectors and 11 of the 14 places surveyed lost dynamism, with a highlight to tobacco, from 5.5% in April/June to -0.5% in the following quarter, fabricated metal products (from 0.3% to -4.2%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (from -1.5% to -5.4%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (from -2.0% to -4.2%), textiles (from -2.3% to -4.0%), food and beverages (from 2.2% to 0.8%) and mining and quarrying (from 1.3% to -0.1%); among the activities and among the places Bahia (from -5.4% to -7.0%), the Northeast Region (from -3.8% to -5.2%), Ceará (from -0.5% to -1.7%), the North and the Central-West Regions (from 1.0% to -0.1%), Minas Gerais (from 0.0% to -1.1%) and Paraná (from 0.5% to -0.6%).

In the cumulative index in the January/September period in 2013, industrial employment posted a drop of 0.9%, with negative rates in 11 of the 14 places and in 11 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the places, the Northeast Region (-4.6%) marked the main negative impact in the industry overall, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-2.2%), Pernambuco (-7.2%), Bahia (-5.6%) and São Paulo (-0.4%). On the other hand, Santa Catarina (1.0%) and Paraná (0.5%) exerted the most important positive pressures in the cumulative index over the nine months of the year. By sector, the most relevant negative contributions to the industry overall came from footwear and leather (-5.3%), wearing apparel (-3.1%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-4.0%), textiles (-3.8%), machinery and equipment (-1.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus(-2.1%) and wood (-5,2%), whereas the sectors of food and beverages (1.5%) and of rubber and plastic (3.1%) accounted for the major positive influences.

 

Number of hours paid shrinks 0.6% in relation to August

In September 2013, the number of hours paid to industrial workers, discounted the seasonal influences, contracted 0.6% against the previous month - the fifth consecutive negative rate, accumulating in this period a loss of 2.8%. With these results, the quarterly moving average index, decreasing 0.5% in the quarter ended in September in relation to the previous month's result, repeated the pace of decline seen in July and August. Considering the seasonally adjusted series, quarter-on-quarter, the number of hours paid fell 1.6% in the July/September period in 2013, after recording a positive change of 0.3% in the second quarter of the year.

In the September 2013/ September 2012 comparison, the number of hours paid declined 1.5%, the fourth consecutive negative result in this kind of comparison and the sharpest since last February (-2.3%). In the comparisons with the same periods in the previous year, the total number of hours paid recorded losses either in the end of the third quarter of 2013 (-1.2%) and in the cumulative index over the nine months of the year (-1.0%). The annualized rate (cumulative index over the last 12 months), shrinking 1.0% in September 2013, continued the decrease in the pace of decline begun last February (-2.0%).

In September 2013, the number of hours paid fell 1.5% in relation to the same month a year ago, with negative rates in ten of the 14 places and in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed. In terms of sectors, the major negative influences came from communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-5.5%), textiles (-6.2%), footwear and leather (-5.6%), fabricated metal products (-3.5%), food and beverages (-0.9%), machinery and equipment (-2.0%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-2.6%). Conversely, the sector of rubber and plastic (5.4%) registered the main positive impact this month, followed by means of transportation (0.9%), basic metals (1.6%) and chemicals (0.9%).

Among the places, as compared to the same month a year ago, the Northeast Region (-7.3%) posted the main negative influence on the country overall in September 2013, pushed to a great extent by the reduction in the number of hours paid in the sectors of food and beverages (-13.3%), footwear and leather (-7.3%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (-11.6%),  non-metallic mineral products (-5.5%), wearing apparel (-3.6%), mining and quarrying  (-10.1%) and  textiles (-6.3%). It is also worth mentioning the negative impacts in São Paulo (-1.0%), with highlights to the drops seen in fabricated metal products (-9.2%), textiles (-11.0%), machinery and equipment (-4.1%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-8.8%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (-8.3%) and means of transportation (-2.0%); Minas Gerais (-2,4%), mostly due to the decreases in food and beverages (-4.1%), textiles (-11.4%), means of transportation (-3.3%), fabricated metal products (-4.2%), footwear and leather (-7.3%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-4.9%), other products of manufacturing industry(-4.7%), rubber and plastic (-7.6%) and basic metals (-2.6%); Pernambuco (-9.5%), especially due to drops in food and beverages (-18.0%), rubber and plastic (-16.9%), wearing apparel (-10.7%), paper and press (-11.0%) and textiles (-14.8%); and Bahia (-6,8%),mainly because of decreases in footwear and leather (-22.9%), non-metallic mineral products (-19.7%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-10.9%), basic metals (-9.8%), mining and quarrying industries (-4.6%) and wearing apparel (-3.2%). On the other hand, Santa Catarina (1.8%) and the North and Central-West Regions (1.0%) exerted the most relevant positive impacts on the total of hours paid, pushed to a great extent by the expansion seen in the sectors of machinery and equipment (7.7%), rubber and plastic (10.6%), fabricated metal products (10.1%), food and beverages (2.0%) and basic metals (11.9%), in the first area, and food and beverages (4.6%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (5.0%) and chemicals (4.0%), in the second.

In a quarterly basis, the number of hours paid, shrinking 1.2% in the third quarter of the year, posted the ninth consecutive quarter of negative results, rising the pace of decline over the index for the April/June period in 2013 (-0.1%), all comparisons with the same periods in the previous year. Between these two periods, 11 of the 18 sectors and 11 of the 14 places surveyed showed loss of dynamism, with a highlight to tobacco, from 6.6% in the April/June period to -3.1% in the following quarter, petroleum refinement and alcohol production (from 1.3% to -3.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (from 1.1% to -3.8%), fabricated metal products (from -0.7% to -4.6%) and food and beverages (from 3.4% to 0.7%), among the activities; among the places, the highlights were Pernambuco (from -4.0% to -7.6%), Bahia (from -5.3% to -7.9%), Northeast Region (from -3.6% to -5.8%), Minas Gerais (from 0.3% to -1.6%) and São Paulo (from 1.2% to -0.6%).

In the cumulative index from January to September 2013, over the same period a year ago, there was a downfall of 1.0% in the number of hours paid, with eleven of the 18 sectors surveyed reporting negative rates. The most relevant negative impacts on the global average of the industry were seen in the segments of footwear and leather (-7.2%), wearing apparel (-3.4%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-4.5%), textiles (-4.6%), machinery and equipment (-2.6%), fabricated metal products (-2.0%) and wood (-5.5%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contribution to the total number of hours paid to the industry employees came from food and beverages (1.7%) and rubber and plastic (2.8%).

By regions, in the cumulative index of the year, 11 of the 14 places surveyed recorded negative rates, with a highlight to the drop of 4.8% registered by the Northeast Region, followed by the losses in Rio Grande do Sul (-2.7%), Bahia (-6.2%), Pernambuco (-7.1%) and São Paulo (-0.2%). Conversely, Santa Catarina (0.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.6%) registered the positive influences of the cumulative index over the nine months against the same period a year ago.

Real Payroll is 1.6% higher than in August

In September 2013, the value of the real payroll of the industrial workers, seasonally adjusted, advanced 1.6% against the previous month, partly offsetting the loss of 2.3% seen last August. It should be noted that there is a clear influence of the 8.5% expansion registered by the mining and quarrying sector, since the manufacturing industry had a more moderate advance (0.8%). Concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall recorded a negative change of 0.1% between the quarters ended in August and September, but reduced the pace of decline over the previous month's result (-1.1%).  In the quarter over quarter comparison, the value of the real payroll shrunk 1.0% in the third quarter of the year and eliminated part of the 1.4% advance seen in the April/June period in 2013.

Contrasting with the same month of the previous year, the real payroll rose by 2.5% in September 2013, after remaining unchanged (0.0%) in August. There was expansion in the end of the third quarter of the year (2.0%) and in the cumulative index of the nine months of 2013 (2.5%), both comparisons with the same periods in the previous year. The annualized rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), expanding 3.8% in September 2013, got very close to the results of May (3.9%), June (3.8%), July (3.9%) and August (3.7%).

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the value of the real payroll recorded an expansion of 2.5% in September 2013, with positive results in 11 of the 14 places surveyed. The highest positive influence on the national overall was seen in São Paulo (2.0%), leveraged by the increase of the real payroll in 11 of the 18 activities surveyed. The highlights were communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (10.2%), rubber and plastic (12.6%), machinery and equipment (5.1%), food and beverages (4.4%) and chemicals (5.7%).

It is also worth highlighting the positive impacts registered by Rio Grande do Sul (5.9%), Santa Catarina (5.8%), Rio de Janeiro (4.6%), North and Central-West Regions (3.7%), Minas Gerais (2.3%) and Paraná (1.9%). In those places, the activities that most contributed positively to the rise in the value of the payroll were, respectively: food and beverages (13.3%), means of transportation (11.3%) and fabricated metal products (14.8%); machinery and equipment (13.1%), rubber and plastic (11.6%), fabricated metal products (12.6%) and food and beverages (4.5%); mining and quarrying industries (6.3%), basic metals (18.6%), rubber and plastic (21.3%) and food and beverages (6.9%); food and beverages (10.4%); non-metallic mineral products (19.6%), chemicals (10.1%), basic metals (3.2%), food and beverages (2.7%) and means of transportation (2.0%); other products of the manufacturing industry (22.2%), means of transportation (4.1%) and machinery and equipment (8.1%). In contrast, the most relevant negative contribution came from Pernambuco (-4.7%), pushed to a great extent by the reduction in the sector of food and beverages (-16.1%).

By sectors, in the monthly index of September 2013, the value of the real payroll for the country as a whole grew in thirteen of the eighteen segments surveyed. The highlights were food and beverages (4.0%), rubber and plastic (9.1%), machinery and equipment (3.9%), chemicals (5.4%), basic metals (5.8%), mining and quarrying industries (3.3%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (2.8%), non-metallic mineral products (3.7%) and fabricated metal products (2.8%). On the other hand, the sharpest negative impacts were seen in means of transportation (-1.4%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (-2.6%) and wood (-4.0%).

In the quarterly analysis, the value of the real payroll, advancing 2.0% in the third quarter of 2013, kept the sequence of positive rates started in the first quarter of 2010 (3.1%), but reduced the growth pace over the result of the April/June period in 2013 (3.6%) - all comparisons against the same period a year ago. This loss of dynamism in the value of the real payroll between the second and third quarters of the year occurred in ten of the 18 activities surveyed, with a highlight to mining and quarrying, from 14.5% to -2.3%, means of transportation (from 3.7% to -0.4%) and petroleum refinement and alcohol production (from 11.2% to -3.6%). Among the two places that reduced the pace between these two periods, Bahia (from 3.9% to -6.2%), Rio de Janeiro (from 7.0% to -1.2%) and Northeast Region (from 1.3% to -2.6%) stood out.

In the cumulative indicator of 2013, the value of the real payroll rose by 2.5%, with positive rates in ten of the 14 places surveyed. The major positive contribution to the industry overall was exerted by São Paulo (2.3%), followed by the North and Central-West Regions (4.5%), Rio de Janeiro (4.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.5%), Minas Gerais (2.4%), Santa Catarina (3.6%) and Paraná (2.5%). Conversely, the negative impacts were caused by the Northeast Region (-0.8%), Pernambuco (-3.6%), Bahia (-1.4%) and Espírito Santo (-0.7%).

Among the sectors, considering the cumulative index of the year, the value of the real payroll advanced in 13 of the 18 activities surveyed, leveraged particularly by the gains coming from food and beverages (4.7%), chemicals (5.0%), mining and quarrying industries (5.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (4.8%), rubber and plastic (5.1%), machinery and equipment (1.9%) and means of transportation (1.1%). On the other hand, the sectors of basic metals (-0.9%), wearing apparel (-1.0%), wood (-1.9%) exerted the major negative influences on the national overall.
