Industrial employment decreases 0.6% in August

In August 2013, the number of salaried employed persons in industry fell 0.6% over that of July, in the seasonally-adjusted series. It was the fourth consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison, with cumulative decrease of 1.3% in the period. August registered the biggest decrease since April 2009 (-0.7%). Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index recorded negative change of 0.3% in the quarter which ended in August, compared to the result of the previous month, and remained on a downward trend as observed since last April. Industrial employment faced decrease of 1.3% in the comparison with August 2012, the 23rd consecutive negative result in this type of comparison and the most significant one since December (-1.4%). Considering the cumlative index of the first eight months of 2013, salaried persons in industry fell 0.8%. The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last twelve months, decreased 1.0% in August and remained recording slight reduction of the decrease observed since February (-1.5%).

Industrial employment decreased by 1.3% in August this year versus August 2012, with reduction of the number of workers in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative impact occurred in the Northeast Region (-4.9%), affected by negative rates in 14 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlights being: food products and beverages (-5.8%), footwear and leather (-8.0%), non-metallic minerals (-7.4%), apparel (-4.0%), petroleum refining and alxohol production (-12.8%), textiles (-5.1%), mining and quarrying industry (-7.9%), metal products (-6.6%), rubber and plastic (-3.8%) and machinery and equipment (-5.2%). São Paulo (-0.9%), Bahia (-7.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.8%), Pernambuco (-6.8%) and Minas Gerais (-1.1%) also recorded negative rates. Santa Catarina, with increase of 0.9% accounted for the main positive contribution to industrial employment in the country, affeced by metal products (9.3%), rubber and plastci (5.4%), machinery and equipment (3.3%), food products and beverages (1.2%) and means of transportation (7.5%). 

By sector, also considering the monthly index of August 2013, salaried employed persons recorded decrease in 13 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlighs being metal products (-4.6%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-4.3%), footwear and leather (-4.7%), machinery and equipment (-2.9%), textiles (-4.4%), other products from manufacturing industry (-3.6%), wood (-5.7%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-5.1%) and non-metallic minerals (-2.1%). The main positive impacts occurred in the subsectors of rubber and plastic (3.3%), food products and beverages (0.8%) and means of transportation (1.3%). 

In terms of the cumulative index of the January-August period in 2013, industrial employment recorded decrease of 0.8%, with negative rates in 11 of the 14 areas and in 11 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. The Northeast Region (-4.4%) registered the main negative impact, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-2.3%), Pernambuco (-7.3%), Bahia (-5.5%) and São Paulo (-0.4%). Santa Catarina (1.0%) and Paraná (-0.7%) accounted for the main positive contributions to the cumulative index of the first eight months in 2013. By subsector, the main negative results came from footwear and leather (-5.3%), apparel (-3.3%), other products from manufacturing industry (-4.1%), textiles (-3.8%), machinery and equipment (-1.9%) and wood (-5.1%), whereas the subsectors of food products and beverages (1.7%) and rubber and plastic (3.0%) accounted for the main positive contributions.

Number of hours paid is 0.7% smaller in August

The number of hours paid to industry workers, without seasonal influences, decreased 0.7% between July and August 2013, the fourth consecutive negative rate and the highest since April 2012 (-0.8%), with cumulative decline of 2.2%. Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index, after decreasing 0.5% in the quarter which ended in August in comparison with the level of the previous month, reached the same level as in July.

In the August 2013/August 2012 comparison, the number of hours paid fell 1.4%, the third negative rate in a row in this type of comparison, and the highest since last February (-2.3%). The rates were negative in 11 of the 14 areas surveyed and in 12 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. By subsector, the main negative conributions came from metal products (-6.0%), footwear and leather (-7.4%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-5.1%), machinery and equipment (-3.3%), textiles (-5.6%) and other products from manufacturing industry (-3.9%). Food products and beverages (1.1%) accounted for the main positive result in the month, followed by rubber and plastic (4.2%) and means of tranportation (2.3%). 

Among the areas, also compared to the same month a year ago, the Northeast Region (-5.3%) accounted for the main negative contribution, affected by the reduction of the number of hours paid in the subsectors of food products and beverages (-6;0%), footwear and leather (-8.3%), non-metallic minerals (-8.4%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-12.7%), metal products (-10.0%), apparel (-3.1%) and textiles (-5.7%). Other negative rates were registered by São Paulo (-1.0%), Bahia (-7.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.3%), Pernambuco (-7.3%), Paraná (-2.0%) and Minas Gerais (-1.3%). Rio de Janeiro (1.6%), Santa CaTarina (0.8%) and North and Central West Region (0.5%) accounted for positive contributions to the overall number of hours paid, due to the expansion of means of transportation (8.8%), food products and beverages (5.8%) and mining and quarrying industry (8.0%), in the first area, rubber and plastic (8.9%) and metal products (9.6%), in the second, and food products and beverages (5.0%), in the last one.

In the cumulative index for the last eight months of 2013, the total number of hours paid in industry also recorded decrease (-0.9%), with similar deceleration as in the end of the first semester of the year. Both comparisons refer to similar period in the previous year. Ten out of the 18 subsectors surveyed faced decline, the main ones being footwear and leather (-7.4%), apparel (-3.7%), other products from manufacturing industry (-4.7%), machinery and equipment (-2.6%), textiles (-4.4%), wood (-5.6%) and metal products (-1.8%). Food products and beverages (2.1%) accounted for the main positive contribution to the number of hours paid to indudstry workers.

At regional level, in terms of the cumulative index in the year, 12 of the 14 areas surveyed presented negative rates, the main highlights being the decrease of 4.4% in the Northeast Region, followed by the losses observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-2.9%), Bahia (-6.1%), pernambuco (-6.7%), Espírito Santo (-4.1%) and São Paulo (-0.1%). Santa Catarina (0.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.6%) accounted for the main positive contributions. 

The anualized rate, the cumulative index in the last 12 months, having decreased 1.1% in August 2013, had a less significant negative result than those in March (-2.0%), April (-1.8%), May (-1.5%), June (-1.4%) and July (-1.2%).

Real payroll fell 2.5% in August

In August 2013, the seasonally-adjusted real payroll of industry workers decreased 2.5% in comparison with the immediately previous month, after positive change of 0.5% in July, representing the biggest decrease since January 2013 (-5.3%). There was clear influence of the 15.5% decrease faced by the mining and quarrying sector: it was affected by the division of profits in an important company of the sector in the previous month, since manufacturing industry has already falled 1.3%. Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index recorded decline of 1.2% in the two quarters which ended in July and August, interrupting the upward trend initiated last March. 

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, real payroll decreased by 0.2% in August 2013 and interrupted 43 months of consecutive positive rates in this type of comparison. Results were negative in seven of the 14 places surveyed. The main negative contributions came from Rio de Janeiro (-10.3%), Northeast Region (-7.5%), Bahia (-12.2%) and Espírito Santo (-5.9%). The main positive contributions came from Rio Grande do Sul (3.9%), Santa Catarina (4.1%), São Paulo (0.6%), North Region and Central West Region (3.4%), Minas Gerais (2.4%), and Paraná (2.8%).

By subsector, also in terms of the monthly index of August 2013, real payroll decreased in seven of the 18 subsectors surveyd, the man highlights being the decreases recorded by mining and quarrying industry (-18.6%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-17.8%) and metal products (-2.3%). The most relevant positive impacts came from food products and beverages (5.2%), rubber and plastic (6.9%), chemical products (4.1%), machinery and equipment (1.3%) and non-metallic minerals (3.1%).

In tnhe cumulative index of the first eight months of 2013, the real payroll of industry recorded expansion of 2.4%, being slightly below that of the end of the first quarter of the year (2.7%). Both comparisons refer to the same period a year ago. Ten of the 14 areas recorded positive results. The biggest positive contribution came from São Paulo (2.3%), followed by North and Central West Region (4.6%), Rio de Janeiro (4.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.2%), Minas Gerais (2.4%), Santa Catarina (3.2%) and Paraná (2.6%). Negative rates were registered by Northeast Region (-0.8%), Pernambuco (-3.5%), Bahia (-1.7%) and Espírito Santo (-0.5%). 

By sector, also in terms of the cumulative index, real payroll increased in 13 of the 18 activities surveyed, affected by the gains in food products and beverages (4.7%), mining and quarrying industry (6.2%), chemical products (4.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (4.6%), rubber and plastic (4.6%), means of transportation (1.4%) and machinery and equipment (1.7%). The sectors of metallurgy (-1.7%), apparel (-1.2%) and wood (-1.7%) accounted for the main negative contributions.

The anualized rate, the cumulative index in the last 12 months, having increased 3.7% in August 2013, recorded a result close to those of March (3.7%), April (3.6%), May (3.9%), June (3.8%) and July (3.9%).
