The cumulative index of 2013 shows Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities as responsible for the biggest increase (11.1%), the highlights being water and air transportation, with average increase of 16.%.  Services rendered to families accounted for the second biggest cumulative increase, 9.8%, with Housing and food services having grown by 10.8%. Professional, administrative and complementary services recorded cumulative increase of 8.4%; Information and communication services, of 6.9% and Other services, of 4.9%.      

The segment of Services rendered to families increased 12.8% in July, over the same month in the previous year, the highest rate recorded in the last 12 months. The highlights in this segment were Housing and food services, with increase of 13.7%, and Other services rendered to families, with a change of 7.2% (Table 1).  July is a month traditionally known for an increase of tourist activities, because of the school vacation period. This significant increase in 2013 results from the improvement of tourism in comparison with July 2012, when the segment had recorded expansion of 6.7% over 2011. It is worth observing that the real income of workers in July 2013 was 1.5% bigger than that of July 2012 and the real income of workers increased 2.7%, according to IBGE's Monthly Employment Survey (PME). This increase was also a consequence of the bigger demand for catering services, mainly because of the activities of air companies during the event World Youth Day.  

Information and communication services recorded increase of 6.9%, below that of June (7.6%). Information and communication technology services - ICT recorded change of 7.3% and audiovisual, publishing and news agency services, a change of 4.5%.  This segment represented 25.6% in terms of contribution in the month, accounting for 2.3 percentage points to the composition of the overall index.   

The increase of Professional, administrative and complementary services was 8.5% in July, in comparison with that in July 2012, versus 7.9% in June and 7.6% in May. Technical professional services, which encompass knowledge-intensive services, grew 0.9% and Administrative and complementary services, which encompass labor-intensive services, 11.6%. With a relative contribution of 21.1%, this segment contributed, in absolute terms, with 1.9 percentage points to the overall index. 

The segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities recorded nominal increase of 12.4% in July, in the comparison with the same month in the previous year, above the rates recorded in June (10.1%) and May (9.9%).  The analysis by type of rate shows that the highest growth rates were those of Water transportation (21.6%) and Air transportation (19.4%). Land transportation recorded increase of 13.4% and warehousing, auxiliary and mailing services recorded a lower change (6.8%). This segment  accounts, in relative terms, for 43.3% and, in absolute terms, for 3.9 percentage points of the general index.  

The segment Other services recorded nominal increase of 2.0%.

In July, Sergipe was the only FU with a negative change (-1.9%)

The data by Federation Unit show that only Sergipe had negative nominal change in July (-1.9%) over the same month in 2012. The higgest rates were those of Mato Grosso (23.5%), Tocantins (17.7%), Ceará (17.4%) and Bahia (16.0%). The lowest positive rates were those of Rio de Janeiro (5.0%), Amapá (4.6%) and Piauí (2.4%) (Graph 3).

Regarding Services rendered to families, the highest growth rates were those of Goiás, São Paulo and Ceará, with increase of about 19.0%.  The lowest rates came from Espírito Santo (3.7%), Pernambuco (3.4%) and Federal District (1.4%).

The services sector recorded nominal growth of 9.0% in July 2013, versus the figure in July 2012, surpassing the rates of June (8.8%) and May (7.6%). Services rendered to families grew 12.8%; Information and communication services, 6.9%; Professional, administrative and complementary services, 8.5%; Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, 12.4% and Other services, 2,0%. The cumulative nominal growth in the year was 8.6% and, in 12 months, 8.8%. In the last 12 months, the growth rate of the services sector in July was below those of October 2012 (11.7%), April 2013 (11.6%), January 2013 (9.7%) and August 2012 (9.6%).      

The Monthly Survey of Services (PMS) is the first short-term indicator that investigates the services sector in Brazil. It encompasses the activities of non-financial business segments, except for the sectors of health, education, public administration and imputed rent (value the owners would earn in case they rented the properties where they live).

In Information and communication services, Goiás, fedral District and Santa Catarina, with average increase of 12.0%, and Rio de Janeiro, with 10.6%, were the Federation Units which accounted for the highest growth rates. Pernambuco (6.0%), Espírito Santo (5.6%) and São Paulo (4.6%) were the Federation Units with the lowest growth rates.

Among Professional, administrative and complementary services, the highlight was Bahia. This state had the highest growth rate (37.6%), followed by Ceará (26.4%) and Federal District (14.8%).  The states of Pernambuco (-0.8%), Santa Catarina (-3.7%), Paraná (-4.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-9.1%) recorded negative nominal changes.

In Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, the highlights, among the Federation Units selected, with the biggest changes in relation to the same month in the previous year, were: Santa Catarina (23.3%), Espírito Santo (19.2%) and Ceará (16.7%). The lowest changes were recorded in Paraná (10.2%), Minas Gerais (6.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (4.2%).  

In the segment Other services, the main increases were those observed in the Federal District (34.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (13.7%) and Santa Catarina (12.3%).  Negative changes were registered in Pernambuco (-2.9%), Espírito Santo (–8.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (-13.0%).
