IPCA of June stays at 0.26%

In the group of health and personal care, which changed from 0.94% in May to 0.36% in June, the main influence came from medicines. After having increased 1.61% in May, medicines registered stable prices in June. As a consequence of the price adjustment of April 4th, they recorded a rise of 4.79% in the first semester of this year, above the rate of 3.33% last year.

Although accelerating from -0.25% in May to 0.14% in June, the group of transportation recorded an additional drop in the prices of gasoline (from –0.52% to –0.93%) and ethanol (from –1.97% to –5.33%). Gasoline (-0.04 percentage points) and ethanol (0.05 percentage points) were the most significant downward pressures, resulting in a fall of 1.67% and in an impact of -0.08 percentage points over the item fuels. On the other hand, urban bus fares led the pressure in June (0.07 percentage points), by rising 2.61%, quite different from the drop of 0.02% in May. The rise of the fares reflected the changes in Rio de Janeiro (5.09%), in which the adjustment of 7.20% was in force from June 1st to 20; São Paulo (4.67%), in which the adjustment of 6.75% was in force from June 2 to 20; and in Goiânia (2.90%), due to the adjustment of 11%, in force from May 22 to June 13. However, Recife recorded a fall of 1.44%, once the fare in force since January 6 was reduced in 4.30% from June 20 onwards. An additional pressure came from airline fares (from -3.43% in May to 6.71% in June) and inter-municipal bus fares (from –0.01% to 1.03%).

Moreover, important items of the budget of families increased less from one month to the other, thus contributing to the deceleration of IPCA from May to June. This is the case of items domestic workers (from 0.76% to 0.50%), manpower for small repairs (from 1.94% to 0.35%) and cleaning products (from 0.83% to 0.12%). The articles of wearing apparel changed from 0.84% to 0.50%, whereas house appliances, which rose 0.49% in May, registered a fall up to 0.56% in June.

As to the regional indexes, the highest change was in Rio de Janeiro (0.65%), due to the rise of 1.64% in the prices of food away from home. Urban bus fares (5.09%) also exerted pressure, reflecting the price adjustment of 7.20% in force from June 1st to 20. The lowest indexes came from Belém (-0.07%) and Curitiba (-0.01%). In Belém, the prices of food products dropped 0.61%, causing an impact of -0.21 percentage points on the index of that region. By falling 6.49%, fuels exerted an impact of -0.37 percentage points in Curitiba.


The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) of June changed 0.26%, 0.11 percentage points lower than the rate of 0.37% in May. It was the lowest rate since June 2012, when it was close to stability (0.08%). As a consequence, the change in the year reached 3.15%, above the level registered in the same period of 2012, when it reached 2.32%. Considering the last 12 months, the index stayed at 6.70%, also above the immediately previous 12 months (6.50%). Continuing to decelerate, the group of food products and beverages changed from 0.31% in May to 0.04% in June, the lowest figure recorded since July 2011, when it registered a deflation of 0.34%. This group recorded a rate below the previous month for the fifth time in a row, yet registering 6.02% in the first semester, above the rate of 3.26% in the first half of 2012.  Transportation exerted a strong pressure over the rate this month, once it changed from a deflation of 0.25% to a rise of 0.14%.


Food products (from 0.31% in May to 0.04% in June), medicines (from 1.61% to zero) and fuels (from –0.75% to –1.67%) highly influenced the downward movement of IPCA in June. In the group of food products and beverages, several products recorded smaller prices from one month to the other.


IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980. It refers to families with monthly income of one to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source, and it encompasses nine metropolitan areas in the country, besides the municipalities of Goiânia and Brasília. In order to estimate the index of the month, the prices collected from May 29 to June 28, 2013 (reference) were compared with the prices in force from April 27 to May 28, 2013 (base).

INPC changes 0.28% in June

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) recorded a change of 0.28% in June, 0.07 percentage points above the result of May (0.35%). As a consequence, the cumulative index in the year stayed at 3.30%, above the rate of 2.56% relative to the same period of 2012. Considering the last 12 months, the index is at 6.97%, very close to the rate of 6.95% in the 12 immediately previous months. In June 2012, INPC was at 0.26%.

 Food products registered a change of -0.10% in June, while non-food products increased 0.44%. In May, the figures stayed at 0.27% and 0.38%, respectively.

Urban bus fares (5.09%) also exerted pressure, reflecting the price adjustment of 7.20% in force from June 1st to 20. The lowest index came from Belém (-0.10%), where the prices of food products dropped 0.62 %, causing an impact of -0.24 percentage points on the index of that region.
