The National School of Statistical Sciences - ENCE, a federal institution of higher education affiliated with IBGE, celebrates its 60th anniversary this Wednesday, March 6th, and reaches out for the future with good news in the fields of teaching and research in Brazil: the implementation of its Doctorate Program on Population, Territory and Public Statistics in the first semester of 2014. The program is being drawn up at IBGE and should be submitted to Capes - Coordination of Improvement for Higher Education Professionals - by the end 2013.

ENCE, the first higher education institution of statistics in Brazil, has strongly influenced the development and establishment of a minimum graduation curriculum in the area of Statistics, contributing, thus, to the organization of courses in several higher education institutions in the country.

In addition to the tradition and acknowledged prestige in the labor market, ENCE has the unique trait of having been created, on March 6, 1953, as a segment of IBGE.  Such a relation provides teachers and students with a constant data exchange with the Institute's professionals.

ENCE plans and develops teaching and research activities in the fields of statistics, demography and geography. In addition to the graduation course in Statistics, it offers two post-graduation courses: Specialization in Environmental Analysis and Territorial Management (since 1997) and a Master Program in Population Studies and Social Surveys (since 1998), graded 4 in CAPES’ evaluation. The School is also responsible for the Improvement Courses offered to IBGE's Servants, including the distance learning modality through the Virtual School.

Since the graduation of its first class, the School has already certified 1782 statisticians. In 2012, the Bachelor’s Program graduated 36 new statisticians; in the post-graduation program, 38 monographs and 95 Master’s Theses were presented.

Growing interest for graduation at ENCE rises the number of candidates in 2013’s selective process

In a world increasingly dependent on information, Statistical Sciences (or simply Statistics) – a set of methods and techniques for data research and analysis – has a decisive importance, covering several areas of knowledge. There has been a rising demand for ENCE's courses each year: in 2013, the number of candidates enrolled in the selective process (1742) was 38% greater than 2012’s (1259). Currently, the entrance in the graduation program occurs by means of the Unified Selection System, which takes the results from ENEN – High School National Exam.  Annually, 120 students can enroll (60 in each semester).

ENCE owns a building in Santa Teresa, a municipality in Rio de Janeiro (106, André Cavalcanti St. – phone: 21-2142-4677).

The 60th anniversary will be celebrated this Wednesday, 03/06, in the School’s auditorium. The ceremony, starting at 15h30min, includes the presentation of IBGE’s Choir followed by the roundtable “ENCE: past, present and future”. The roundtable will be composed of IBGE's president, Dr.  Wasmália Barata Bivar, the general coordinator of ENCE, Dr. Denise Britz do Nascimento Silva and Dr. Simon Schwartzman (from IETS – Institute for Studies on Labor and Society).
