In December 2012, the total of employed persons in the industry recorded a negative change of -0.2% over the preceding month, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having registered -0.3 in September, 0.4% in October and 0.1% in November. With these results, the quarterly moving average recorded a positive change of 0.1% in the quarter ended in December against the previous month’s level, after having remained unchanged for four consecutive months. Still in the seasonally adjusted series, in the quarter-over-preceding-quarter comparison, industrial employment also recorded a positive change of 0.1% in the fourth quarter of 2012 and interrupted four consecutive quarters of negative rates – a period in which it had a cumulative loss of 1.8%. In the comparison with the same month a year ago, industrial employment declined 1.3% in December 2012, the 15th negative consecutive result in this kind of comparison and the most intense since last September (-1.9%).  The index of the fourth quarter 2012 stayed 1.2% below the level seen in the October-December period in 2011. In the cumulative index of 2012, the total of employed persons in the industry shrank in 2012 (-1.4%) and removed the positive result recorded in 2011 (1.0%) and in 2010 (3.4%), all comparisons against the same period a year ago. The annual rate, cumulative index over the last 12 months, moving from -1.3% in November to -1.4% in December, kept the downward trend begun in February 2011 (3.9%).

Comparing with December 2011, industrial employment shrank 1.3% in December 2012 and the contingent of employees recorded reduction in 13 of the 14 places surveyed.  The main negative impact on the overall average was seen in the Northeast Region (-3.8%). Of particular note are the negative results posted by São Paulo (-1.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.2%) and Pernambuco (-5.7%). On the other hand, Paraná (0.7%) recorded the only positive contribution to industrial employment in the country.

 

By sector, concerning the monthly index, the total of salaried employed persons decreased in 13 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to the negative pressures coming from apparel (-8.6%), textiles (-7.4%), footwear and leather (-5.4%), transportation means (-2.5%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.7%), wood (-7.7%), basic metals (-3.5%), electric-electronic and communication machinery and apparatus (-2.1%) and paper and press (-2.2%). On the other hand, the main positive impact on the average of the industry was seen in the sector of food and beverages (3.2%)

 

In the cumulative index in 2012, industrial employment posted a drop of 1.4%, with negative rates in 12 of the 14 places and in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the places, São Paulo (-2.6%) marked the main negative impact in the industry overall, followed by the Northeast Region (-2.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.9%), Santa Catarina (-1.1%), Bahia (-2.6%) and Ceará (-2.5%). On the other hand, Paraná (2.2%) and Minas Gerais (0.8%) exerted positive influences in the cumulative index of the year. Among the sectors, the most relevant negative contributions on the national average came from apparel (-8.9%), footwear and leather (-6.2%), textiles (-5.9%), fabricated metal products (-3.2%), paper and press (-3.5%), wood (-8.0%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-2.8%) and basic metals (-3.6%), whereas the sectors of food and beverages (3.9%), mining and quarrying (3.8%) and machinery and equipment (1.1%) were responsible for the main positive influences.

 

Number of hours paid shrinks 1.9% in 2012

 

In December of 2012, the number of hours paid to industry workers, discounted the seasonal influences, remained unchanged (0.0%) against the preceding month, after contracting 0.2% in November and advancing of 1.1% in October.  The quarterly moving average recorded a positive change of 0.3% in December, accelerating the pace against October’s (0.1%) and November’s results (0.1%). Considering the seasonally adjusted series, in the quarter-over-preceding quarter comparison, the number of hours paid rose by 0.5% in the fourth quarter of 2012, interrupting two consecutive quarters of negative rates: -1.6% in the second quarter and -0.3% in the third.

 

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the number of hours paid marked, in December 2012 (-1.2%), the 16th  consecutive negative rate in that type of analysis. The index of the fourth quarter of 2012 stayed 1.1% below the level seen in the October-December period in 2011. In the cumulative index of the year, the total number of hours paid in the industry shrank in 2012 (-1.9%) and removed the positive results recorded in 2011 (0.3%) and in 2010 (4.1%), all comparisons against the same period a year ago. The annual rate (cumulative index in the last 12 months), recording a contraction of 1.9% in December 2012, repeated November’s result and kept the downward trend started in February of 2011 (4.5%).

 

In December 2012, the number of hours paid fell 1.2% in relation to the same month a year ago, with negative rates in 11 of the 14 places and in 11 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the sectors, the main negative influences came from apparel (-9.7%), footwear and leather (-7.9%), textiles (-7.7%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-4.3%), transportation means (-2.7%), wood (-9.2%) and basic metals (-5.4%). Conversely, the activity food and beverages (4.9%) recorded the main positive result this month.

 

Among the places, as compared to the same month a year ago, the Northeast Region (-5.8%) marked the main negative influence on the country’s overall. Of particular note are the negative impacts posted by Rio Grande do Sul (-3.7%), Bahia (-8.2%) and Pernambuco (-7.6%). On the other hand, São Paulo (0.5%) exerted the major positive contribution to the overall number of hours paid.

 

In the cumulative index (January to December 2012), there was a downturn of 1.9% in the number of hours paid, with 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed reporting negative rates. The most relevant negative impacts on the overall average of the industry came from apparel (-9.8%), footwear and leather (-6.5%), textiles (-4.9%), fabricated metal products (-3.0%), wood (-8.3%), paper and press (-3.7%), transportation means (-2.2%), basic metals (-4.7%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.3%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contribution to the total number of hours paid to the industry employees came from food and beverages (2.7%).  Concerning the areas, 12 of the 14 places presented negative rates, with a highlight to the contraction of 3.0% observed in São Paulo, followed by the losses in the Northeast Region (-2.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.1%), Bahia (-4.1%) and Santa Catarina (-1.5%). On the other hand, Minas Gerais (0.8%) and Paraná (0.9%) posted the positive rates in the cumulative index of 2012.

 

Real Payroll grows 4.3% in 2012

 

In December 2012, the value of the real payroll of the industrial workers (seasonally adjusted) posted a 2.3% drop compared with the preceding month, after a rise of 7.9% in November.  It is worth mentioning that this month’s result both in mining and quarrying (-6.0%) and in the manufacturing industry (-2.7%) recorded negative rates, reflecting at a great extent the sharpest advances seen in the preceding month: 8.3% and 7.4%, respectively. With these results, the quarterly moving average index registered a 1.9% increase in December, after recording a 2.0% expansion in the previous month. Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, in the quarter-over-preceding quarter comparison, the value of the real payroll recorded a fall of 4.0% in the fourth quarter of 2012 - the second consecutive quarter of negative results, accumulating a rise of 4.5% in this period.

 

Contrasting with the same month of the previous year, the real payroll rose by 8.0% in December 2012, the 36th consecutive positive result in that kind of comparison. In the end of the fourth quarter of 2012, the value of the real payroll increased 7.4% over the same period a year ago. The cumulative index in 2012 expanded 4.3%, repeating the result seen in 2011 (4.3%). The annual rate, cumulative index in the last twelve months, registering a growth of 4.3% in December 2012, posted a pace gain against the result of September (3.0%), October (3.2%) and November (3.8%).

 

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the value of the real payroll recorded an expansion of 8.0% in December 2012, with positive results in 12 of the 14 places surveyed. The main positive influences on the national overall were seen in São Paulo (9.4%), North and Central-West Regions (14.6%), Paraná (12.9%), Santa Catarina (11.4%), Minas Gerais (4.8%), the Northeast Region (5.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (6.1%). Conversely, Rio de Janeiro (-1.9%) and Bahia (-2.1%) registered the negative results this month.

 

Among the sectors, in the monthly index of December 2012, the value of the real payroll in the country’s overall grew in 17 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to food and beverages (16.7%), chemical products (12.2%), machinery and equipment (5.1%), fabricated metal products (9.4%), other products of the manufacturing industry (16.3%), rubber and plastic (9.0%), electric-electronic and communication machinery and apparatus (7.7%), non-metallic minerals (11.4%), transportation means (2.1%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (12.6%), textiles (9.8%) and mining and quarrying industries (4.7%).

 

In the cumulative indicator of 2012, the value of the real payroll rose by 4.3%, with positive rates in all 14 places surveyed, with a highlight to São Paulo (2.1%).  It is worth mentioning as well the positive contributions seen in Paraná (9.5%), Minas Gerais (6.4%), North and Central-West Regions (7.2%), the Northeast Region (5.1%), Rio de Janeiro (5.5%), Santa Catarina (5.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (4.1%).

 

Among the sectors, considering the cumulative index of the year, the value of the real payroll advanced in 15 of the 18 activities surveyed, leveraged particularly by the gains coming from food and beverages (9.6%), machinery and equipment (6.1%), mining and quarrying industries (8.8%), chemical products (4.4%), transportation means (1.9%), electric-electronic and communication machinery and apparatus (4.1%), non-metallic mineral products (5.6%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (6.0%). On the other hand, the sectors of apparel (-2.7%), footwear and leather (-0.9%), wood (-1.6%) exerted the greatest negative influences on the national overall.
