Retail sales increase by 0.8% in October

In October, the retail trade changed 0.8% in the volume of sales and 1.1% in the nominal revenue, compared with the previous month (seasonally adjusted).  It is the fifth consecutive month of growth in the volume and the eighth with a rise in the revenue.  The quarterly moving average recorded rates of 0.4% for the volume and of 1.1% for the revenue. In the other comparisons, obtained from the unadjusted original series, the retail trade recorded, as to the volume of sales, increases of 9.1% over October of the previous year and of 8.9% in the accumulated indicator of the first ten months of the year and of 8.5% in the last 12 months.  For the same indicators, the revenue recorded rates of 13.9%, 12.3% and 12.0%, respectively. In relation to the previous month, the extended retail trade recorded changes of 8.0% for the volume and of 4.7% for the revenue; both rates seasonally adjusted.  Compared with the same month a year ago (seasonally unadjusted), the changes were of 14.5% for the volume and of 15.6% for the revenue. In the indicators accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months, the sector presented change rates of 8.5% and 7.6% for the volume of sales and of 9.7% and 9.1% for the nominal revenue, respectively. Results were positive in all states in the comparison with October 2011

Considering the volume of sales in the October12/October11 relation, all the 27 Federation Units had positive changes; the most relevant were in Roraima (29.3%); Maranhão (22.7%); Acre (22.4%); Mato Grosso do Sul (21.3%) and Tocantins (19.4%). Concerning the contribution to the rate, the highlights were São Paulo (9.4%); Rio Grande do Sul (13.0%); Minas Gerais (7.1%); Rio de Janeiro (5.0%) and Paraná (8.4%)

As for the extended retail, the 27 states recorded positive growth rates for the volume of sales and the highest changes occurred in occurred in Tocantins (33.0%); Maranhão (26.3%); Mato Grosso do Sul (23.7%); Amapá (22.5%) and Goiás (22.4%). In terms of the impact on the overall result of the sector, the highlights were São Paulo (13.8%); Rio Grande do Sul (17.7%); Rio de Janeiro (11.2%); Minas Gerais (12.7%) and Paraná (15.8%).

Concerning the Federation Units, the seasonally adjusted results for the volume of sales point to 16 of the 27 states with positive results on a month over month basis. The highlights are: Acre (5.5%); Tocantins (5.0%); Maranhão (3.8%); Paraíba (2.9%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (2.2%). On the other hand, the greatest drops took place in Roraima (-2.7%); Amapá (-2.1%) and Goiás (-1.2%).

 

Among the 10 activities, seven present positive changes

In the seasonally adjusted series, seven activities recorded positive changes and three, negative for the volume of sales:  office, computer and communication equipment and material (18.4%); vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories (13.3%); books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (5.2%); other articles of personal and household use (3.3%); construction material (2.8%), furniture and household appliances (1.4%); hypermarket, supermarket, food, beverages and tobacco (0.4%); pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (-0.1%); fuels and lubricants (-0.3%); and fabric, apparel and footwear (-2.2%).

In the October 12/October 11 relation (unadjusted series), all retail activities recorded positive changes in the volume of sales:  6.7% for hyper-, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco; 13.0% for furniture and domestic appliances; 13.6% for other articles of personal and domestic use; 11.5% for fuels and lubricants; 12.8% for pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toiletries; 16.6% for office, computer and communication equipment and material; 4.5% for fabric, apparel and footwear and 11.6% for books, newspapers, magazines and stationery.

The sector of hyper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with a change of 6.7% in the volume of sales in October, against the same month a year ago, keeps the leadership as the main contributor (33%) to the  retail overall rate. Due to the sector’s inflation, the segment had a performance below the retail result, as opposed to what happened in September. But the activity has been pushed by the increase in the purchase power of the population, attributable to income volume and employment stability. The accumulated rates in the year and in the last 12 months were of 8.7% and 8.1%, respectively.

Furniture and household appliances, with an increase of 13.0% in the volume of sales in relation to October last year, was the second main contributor to the trade performance rate (26%). This result, superior to the average established in the retail, is due to credit, price reduction in the electric-electronic items influenced by the reduction of the IPI and to the upward trend of the real income usually earned of the salaried persons.    In accumulated terms, the sector registered a rise of 13.1% for the first ten months of the year, over the same period of 2011, and of 13.3% for the last 12 months.

The activity of other articles of personal and domestic use, which encompasses department, optical, jewelry, sport article, toy stores etc., was the third main contributor to the retail rate (13%), with a change of 13.6% in the volume of sales in relation to October of 2011. The favorable conditions of credit, the behavior of the volume of wages, job stability and the Children’s Day celebrations are the main factors leading to the positive performance of this sector.  In the accumulated indexes, the rate for the first ten months of the year was 8.4%, and for the last 12 months, 7.2%.

Fuels and lubricants were responsible for the fourth greater contribution to the retail result, with a 11.5% change in the volume of sales in relation to October 2011. In terms of accumulated performance in the year, the change rate reached 6.9%, and, in the last 12 months, 5.9%.  The rise in the car fleet and the price reduction of fuels (changing from -2.0% in 12 months, according to IPCA) were responsible for the rate.

 

Extended retail trade grew 8.0%

The extended retail trade recorded changes of 8.0% for the volume of sales and of 4.7% for the nominal revenue in relation to the previous month; both rates seasonally adjusted.  Compared with the same month a year ago (seasonally unadjusted), the changes were of 14.5% for the volume of sales and of 15.6% for the nominal revenue. In the indicators accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months, the sector presented change rates of 8.5% and 7.6% for the volume of sales and of 9.7% and 9.1% for the nominal revenue, respectively.

As for the volume of sales, vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces rose 24.0% in relation to October 2011. This change is basically due to the government policy of tax exemption based on the IPI reduction for vehicles. In the accumulated rates in the year and in the last 12 months, the changes were of 7.7% and 6.0%, respectively. 

As for construction material, changes were of 14.0% in relation to October of 2012, of 8.4% in the accumulated indicator of the year and of 7.9% in the last 12 months.  According to the Central Bank, in October, directed credit posted a significant growth with an emphasis on housing credit, which can be attributed to a reduction of interest rates. The government tax exemption through the IPI reduction keeps stimulating the segment’s performance.
