Industrial employment changes 0.4% in October

Comparing with October 2011, the industrial employment receded 1.2%, with the contingent of employees recording reduction in ten of the fourteen places surveyed.  The main negative impact on the overall average was observed in Northeast region (-3.8%), pushed at a great extent by the negative rates recorded in 11 of the 18 sectors surveyed. The highlight was the drop in the total number of employed persons in the industries of food and beverages (-3.8%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (-22.6%), apparel (-5.4%), footwear and leather (-3.1%), textiles (-5.7%), transportation means (-10.9%), and mining and quarrying industries (-7.4%). It is also worth mentioning the negative results from São Paulo (-1.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.7%) and Pernambuco (-6.8%), the former being influenced by the drops registered in the sectors of apparel (-13.7%), fabricated metal products (-9.3%), transportation means (-5.8%), textiles (-10.0%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-6.4%); the second due to the losses recorded in footwear and leather (-13.3%), rubber and plastic (-10.7%), transportation means (-5.0%) and apparel (-16.3%); and, the latter, pressed by reductions coming from food and beverages (-11.1%), transportation means (-27.9%), rubber and plastic (-11.3%) and non-metallic minerals (-8.4%). On the other hand, Minas Gerais (0.7%) and Paraná (0.8%) gave the most significant positive contributions to the industrial employment of the country. In Minas Gerais, the highlights were fabricated metal products (7.0%), transportation means (5.6%) and non-metallic minerals (7.5%). And in the industrial sector in Paraná, the highlights were food and beverages (4.9%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (11.1%).

 

Among the sectors, in the monthly index, the total of salaried employed persons receded in 12 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to the negative pressures coming from apparel (-10.5%), footwear and leather (-5.9%), transportation means (-3.3%), textiles (-5.5%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.7%), wood (-6.6%), electric-electronic and communication machinery and apparatus (-2.4%) and paper and press (-2.5%). On the other hand, the main positive impact on the industry average was seen in the sector of food and beverages (4.0%), being followed by rubber and plastic (2.1%) and mining and quarrying industries (3.6%).

 

In the index accumulated in the first ten months of 2012, the industrial employment kept the falling movement (-1.4%), with negative rates in twelve of the 14 places and in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the places, São Paulo (-3.0%) marked the main negative impact in the industry overall, followed by the Northeast Region (-2.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.5%), Santa Catarina (-1.3%), Ceará (-2.7%) and Bahia (-2.6%). On the other hand, Paraná (2.5%) and Minas Gerais (1.0%) exerted positive influences in the accumulated index in the year. Among the sectors, the most relevant negative contributions on the national average came from apparel (-8.8%), footwear and leather (-6.3%), textiles (-5.6%), fabricated metal products (-3.7%), paper and press (-3.8%), wood (-8.2%), basic metals (-3.7%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-2.6%) and rubber and plastic (-2.2%), whereas the sectors of food and beverages (3.8%), machinery and equipment (1.3%) and mining and quarrying (3.9%) were responsible for the main positive influences.

 

Number of hours paid in October is 1.1% higher than in September

 

In October of 2012, the number of hours paid to industrial workers, discounted the seasonal influences, advanced 1.1% against the immediately previous month, with a decrease of 0.7% observed in September.  Concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index, with a slight positive change (0.1%) between the quarters ended in September and October, kept the stability seen since last August.

 

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the number of hours paid marked, in October 2012 (-1.1%), the fourteenth consecutive negative rate in that type of comparison, but the less intense since last February (-0.8%). The index accumulated in the first ten months of the year pointed out a drop of 2.1% against the same period a year ago. The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), recording a retraction of 2.0% in October 2012, repeated the rate of the previous month and kept the downward trend started in February of 2011 (4.5%).

 

In October 2012, the number of hours paid reduced 1.1% in relation to the same month a year ago, with negative rates in ten of the fourteen places and in ten of the eighteen sectors surveyed. Among the sectors, the main negative influences came from apparel (-11.9%), footwear and leather (-5.8%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-5.3%), wood (-7.9%), transportation means (-2.1%), textiles (-3.2%) and machinery and equipment (-1.5%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contribution this month came from food and beverages (4.1%), followed by chemical products (2.3%) and mining and quarrying industries (4.1%).

 

Among the places, as compared to the same month a year ago, the Northeast region (-4.3%) posted the main negative influence on the country overall, pushed at a great extent by the reduction in the number of hours paid in the sectors of food and beverages (-5.1%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (-22.1%), apparel (-6.7%), footwear and leather (-2.8%) and transportation means (-12.0%). It is also worth mentioning the negative impacts marked by São Paulo (-1.1%), mostly due to the retraction observed in apparel (-17.8%), transportation means (-5.2%), fabricated metal products (-7.5%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-7.2%); Rio Grande do Sul (-3.8%), mostly due to the decreases registered in footwear and leather (-11.8%), rubber and plastic (-10.7%), machinery and equipment (-4.1%) and apparel (-19.0%); and Pernambuco (-8.3%), attributable to the lower number of hours worked in the sectors of food and beverages (-13.6%) and transportation means (-28.9%). On the other hand, Minas Gerais (2.3%) exerted the main positive contributions to the total number of hours paid, pushed at a great extent by the growth in the sectors of transportation means (14.3%), fabricated metal products (10.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (6.7%), non-metallic minerals (6.3%) and basic metals (4.0%).

 

In the index accumulated in the first ten months of 2012, there was a downfall of 2.1% in the number of hours paid, with 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed reporting negative rates. The major negative impacts on the overall average of the industry came from apparel (-9.7%), footwear and leather (-6.3%), fabricated metal products (-3.6%), textiles (-4.6%), paper and press (-3.9%), wood (-8.4%), basic metals (-4.7%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.1%) and transportation means (-1.9%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contribution to the total number of hours paid to the industry employees came from food and beverages (2.2%) and mining and quarrying industries (4.1%). Concerning the regions, 12 of the 14 places presented negative rates, with a highlight to the contraction of 3.7% observed in São Paulo, followed by the losses in the Northeast region (-2.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.9%), Santa Catarina (-1.8%), Bahia (-3.6%) and the North and Central-West Regions (-1.2%).  However, Minas Gerais (1.0%) and Paraná (1.2%) posted the positive rates in the index accumulated from January to October of 2012.

 

To sum up, the total of the employed persons and the number of hours paid in the industry, in October 2012, posted positive rates in the comparison with the immediately previous month, with the first eliminating the losses registered in August and September, and the second recording the highest positive result since last February. It is worth mentioning that the positive indexes of the labor market this month reflect, at a great extent, the pace growth in the industrial output in the last five months, period in which it advanced 2.3%. In that same period (June-October), the industrial employment showed a positive change of 0.1%, and the number of hours paid showed an increase of 0.5%, both reversing part of the losses observed in the first five months of the year. The evolution of the quarterly moving average index, even though keeping a behavior of stability in the last three months, reinforces this moment of subtle gain of dynamism of the industrial sector. In this indicator, the total of salaried employed persons and the number of hours paid mark a decrease in the predominantly negative rates observed between October 2011 and July this year.

 

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the industrial employment and the number of hours paid kept registering negative rates in October 2012, but both posting less intense losses than the ones observed since last February.  The index accumulated in the first ten months of the year remained pointing negative results and kept the dissemination profile of negative rates among the places and sectors surveyed.

 

Real Payroll changes 0.1% in October

 

In October of 2012, the seasonally adjusted real payroll of the industrial workers showed a positive change of 0.1% against the immediately previous month, after advancing 2.1% in August and retreating 2.1% in September. With these results, the quarterly moving average index (0.0%) repeated in the quarter ended in October the September’s standard.

 

Contrasting with the same month of the previous year, the value of the real payroll rose by 3.0% in October 2012, the 30th consecutive positive result in this kind of comparison and the most intense since last June (4.1%). The index accumulated in the first ten months of 2012 pointed out a growth of 3.2% against the same period a year ago. The annual rate, index accumulated in the last twelve months, registering a growth of 3.2% in October 2012, posted a slight pace gain against the result of September (3.0%).

 

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the value of the real payroll recorded an expansion of 3.0% in October 2012, with positive results in 13 of the 14 places surveyed. The main positive influences on the national total came from Minas Gerais (5.8%), Rio de Janeiro (7.9%), Paraná (5.8%), North and Central-West region (6.0%), São Paulo (0.8%) and Northeast region (2.8%). In those places, the activities that mostly contributed in a positive way to the rise in the real payroll were: In Minas Gerais: transportation means (19.0%), mining and quarrying industries (8.2%) and non-metallic minerals (11.1%); in Rio de Janeiro: mining and quarrying industries (11.3%), chemical products (20.6%), fabricated metal products (19.6%) and food and beverages (8.7%); in Paraná: communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (31.2%) and food and beverages (7.1%); in the North and Central-West regions: food and beverages (11.1%), mining and quarrying industries (12.2%) and fabricated metal products (14.5%); in São Paulo: food and beverages (11.1%), rubber and plastic (7.4%), chemical products (3.8%) and non-metallic minerals (9.1%); in the Northeast region: chemical products (20.3%), mining and quarrying industries (9.4%) and food and beverages (1.6%).  Conversely, Pernambuco (-2.6%) registered the only negative result this month, particularly influenced by the sector of transportation means (-33.4%).

 

Among the sectors, still in the monthly index of October 2012, the value of the real payroll in relation to the country’s overall grew in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to food and beverages (7.4%), mining and quarrying industries (9.9%), chemical products (7.2%), rubber and plastic (6.8%), non-metallic minerals (5.7%), fabricated metal products (2.4%), communication electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (2.0%) and petroleum refinement and alcohol production (4.1%).  On the other hand, the sectors of apparel (-7.6%) exerted the greatest negative impact on the industry overall.

 

In the indicator accumulated in the first ten months 2012, the value of the real payroll rose by 3.2%, with positive rates in all 14 places surveyed, with a highlight to Minas Gerais (6.4%) and Paraná (8.5%), attributable at a great extent to the gains in the sectors of mining and quarrying (10.6%), transportation means (7.5%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (11.3%), food and beverages (5.1%), non-metallic minerals (10.6%) and rubber and plastic (16.7%), in the first place, and food and beverages (11.8%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (37.3%) and transportation means (9.2%), in the second.  It is worth mentioning as well the positive contributions seen in Rio de Janeiro (6.0%), Northeast region (4.8%), North and Central-West regions (5.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.3%) and Santa Catarina (3.5%). In those places, the activities that most contributed in a positive way were, respectively, mining and quarrying industries (8.5%), transportation means (5.1%) and food and beverages (8.9%); food and beverages (6.2%), chemical products (11.8%), non-metallic minerals (8.6%) and mining and quarrying industries (4.7%); food and beverages (11.9%) and mining and quarrying industries (12.2%); machinery and equipment (7.5%), food and beverages (6.2%) and transportation means (6.3%); and machinery and equipment (9.2%) and food and beverages (6.1%).

 

Among the sectors, considering the index accumulated in the year, the value of the real payroll advanced in 13 of the 18 activities surveyed, leveraged particularly by the gains coming from food and beverages (7.9%), machinery and equipment (5.7%), mining and quarrying industries (8.6%), transportation means (1.8%), chemical products (3.1%) and non-metallic minerals (4.4%). On the other hand, the sectors of apparel (-4.2%), footwear and leather (-2.6%), textiles (-2.0%) and wood (-4.2%) exerted the greatest negative influences on the national overall.

In October 2012, the total of employed persons in the industry recorded a positive change of 0.4% over the immediately previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having registered negative rates in August (-0.1%) and in September (-0.3%). Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index repeated in the quarter ended in October (0.0%) the pattern of September and August, after registering a behavior of a lower dynamism between October 2011 and July 2012. In the comparison with same month a year ago, the industrial employment posted a drop of 1.2% in October 2012, the 13th  consecutive negative result in this kind of confront, but the less intense since last February (-0.8%).  In the index accumulated in the ten months of 2012, the total of salaried employed persons marked a decrease of 1.4% over the same period a year ago. The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), recording a drop of 1.2% in October 2012, repeated September’s result and kept the downward trend begun in February 2011 (3.9%).
