Industrial employment changes -0.3% in May

In May 2012, the total of employed persons in the industry recorded a negative change of 0.3% against the immediately previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series - the third consecutive negative result in this kind of comparison, accumulating a loss of 1.1% in this period. Concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index, with a change of -0.4% between the quarters ended in April and May, kept the prevailing negative behavior seen since October last year.  In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the industrial employment declined 1.7% in May 2012, the eighth consecutive negative result in this kind of comparison and the most intense since December 2009 (-2.4%).  The accumulated index in the first four months of 2012 pointed a downfall of 1.1% and intensified the falling pace contrasted to the one observed in the first quarter of  2011 (-0.9%) - both comparisons made against the same period in the previous year.  The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), recording -0.3% in May 2012, kept the downward trend begun in February 2011 (3.9%).

 Comparing with the same month last year, the industrial employment receded 1.7% in May 2012, with the contingent of employees recording reduction in 12 of the 14 places surveyed.  The main negative impact was observed in São Paulo (-3.2%), pushed at a great extent by the negative rates in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed. The highlight was the drop in the total number of employed persons in the industries of fabricated metal products (-12.6%), basic metals (-20.1%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-8.7%), textiles (-8.5%), paper and press (-6.8%), transportation means (-3.6%), apparel (-7.6%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-5.7%). Other negative results were posted by the Northeast Region (-2.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.3%), Santa Catarina (-1.4%), Ceará (-3.2%) and Bahia (-3.4%). The former was influenced by the drops in the sectors of footwear and leather (-5.8%), apparel (-7.2%) and textiles (-9.9%); the second region fell due to losses registered in footwear and leather (-11.5%), rubber and plastic (-11.3%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-6.1%); the third was pushed by reductions coming from apparel (-9.2%), wood (-14.6%) and footwear and leather (-23.0%) and textiles (-2.5%); the industry of Ceará felt the impact of decreases in apparel (-8.3%), footwear and leather (-3.5%), and textiles (-8.5%); and the last region was affected by the contractions of the employed persons of the manufacturing industry of footwear and leather (-12.7%) and food and beverage (-7.9%). Paraná (2.2%) and Minas Gerais (0.3%) marked the main positive contributions . The highlights were the segments of communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (35.1%) and food and beverages (6.1%), in the industry in Paraná, and of fabricated metal products (6.7%), mining and quarrying industries (7.6%) and basic metals (4.3%), in the Minas Gerais’ industrial sector.

Among the sectors, considering the monthly index, the industrial employment shrank in 12 of the 18 sectors surveyed. The highlights were the negative results from apparel (-8.7%), footwear and leather (-6.1%), fabricated metal products (-4.3%), textiles (-5.7%), paper and press (-4.6%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.8%), wood (-7.7%), basic metals (-4.8%) and rubber and plastic (-3.0%).  The main positive impacts were seen in the sectors of food and beverages (3.0%), machinery and equipment (2.0%) and mining and quarrying industries (3.4%).

In the index accumulated in the first five months of 2012, the industrial employment kept the falling movement (-1.1%), with negative rates in nine of the 14 places and in 11 of the 18 sectors surveyed. São Paulo (-3.2%) marked the main negative impact, followed by the Northeast Region (-1.8%), Santa Catarina (-1.4%), Ceará (-3.2%) and Bahia (-2.6%). Paraná (3.6%) and Minas Gerais (1.4%) exerted the major positive influences. Among the sectors, the most relevant negative contributions came from apparel (-7.2%), fabricated metal products (-5.3%), footwear and leather (-6.6%), textiles (-5.4%), wood (-9.4%), rubber and plastic (-3.8%) and paper and press (-4.0%); whereas the sectors of food and beverages (3.9%), machinery and equipment (2.4%), mining and quarrying  (4.3%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (1.7%) were responsible for the major positive impacts.

Number of hours paid is -0.6% lower than in April

In May of 2012, the number of hours paid to industrial workers, discounted the seasonal influences, retracted -0.6% against the immediately previous month, the third consecutive negative rate, accumulating in this period a loss of 2,6%.  As a result, in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index recorded a drop of -0.9% in the quarter ended in May against the results of the previous month, after posting a negative change of 0.3% in April.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the number of hours paid marked, in May 2012 (-2,8%), the ninth consecutive negative rate in that type of comparison and the most substantial since November 2009 (-3,1%), with negative figures in 13 of the 14 places and in 15 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the sectors, the main negative influences came from apparel (-9.0%), fabricated metal products (5.0%), footwear and leather (-5.2%), paper and press (-5.3%), textiles (-5.8%), transportation means (-3.0%) and basic metals (-6.1%). Mining and quarrying industries (3.1%), chemical products (1.4%) and machinery and equipment (0.7%) registered the positive results this month.

The accumulated index in the first five months of the year also posted a negative result (-1.7%), sharpening the falling pace against the previous months, with 13 of the 18 sectors surveyed recording falling rates.  The major negative influences came from apparel (-7.6%), fabricated metal products (-5.3%), footwear and leather (-6.2%), textiles (-5.7%), wood (-9.1%), paper and press (-4.0%), rubber and plastic (-3.8%) and basic metals (-4.7%).  The main positive contribution on the total number of hours paid to the industry employees came from food and beverages (2.0%), followed by machinery and equipment (2.3%) and mining and quarrying industries (4.1%).  Concerning the regions, 11 of the 14 places presented negative rates, with a highlight to the contraction of 3.9% observed in São Paulo, followed by the losses in Santa Catarina (-2.2%), the Northeast Region (-1.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.4%) and Bahia (-3.3%). Minas Gerais (1.5%), Paraná (1.8%), and Pernambuco (1.0%) posted the positive rates in the index accumulated from January to May of 2012.

The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), recording a retraction of 1.1% in June 2012, kept the downward trend started in February of 2011 (4.5%).

Real Payroll falls 2.5% in May

In May of 2012, the value of the industrial workers’ real payroll seasonally adjusted retracted 2.5% if compared to the immediately previous month, recording the sharpest drop since December 2010 and the third negative consecutive rate in this type of contrast, accumulating a loss of 3.5% in this period. In this month’s result, the 2.5% reduction posted by the manufacturing industry is evident, once the mining and quarrying sector advanced 1.9%. Concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index, with a fall of 1.2% between the quarters ended in April and May, registered the first negative result since December last year.

Contrasting with the same month of the previous year, the real payroll rose by 1.1% in May 2012, the 29th consecutive positive result in that kind of comparison. In that kind of analysis, the value of the real payroll recorded an expansion in 12 of the 14 places surveyed. The major influences on the national overall were seen in Minas Gerais (8.4%) and in the Northeast region (6.2%). The only negative result this month occurred in São Paulo (-4.1%).  Among the sectors, concerning the monthly index, the value of the real payroll grew in 13 of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to machinery and equipment (9.2%), mining and quarrying industries (11.9%), food and beverages (3.6%) chemical products (5.6%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (2.5%), non-metallic minerals (3.6%) and rubber and plastic (3.1%).  Conversely, the sectors of transportation means (-10.9%) exerted the greatest negative impact on the industry overall.

In the indicator accumulated in the first five months 2012, the value of the real payroll rose by 3,8%, with positive rates in 13 of the 14 places surveyed, with a highlight to Minas Gerais (8.3%) and Paraná (10.8%), attributable to the gains in the sectors of mining and quarrying (23.6%), transportation means (5.6%), food and beverages (6.6%), non-metallic minerals (14.4%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (11.5%), in the first place, and of food and beverages (15.1%) and transportation means (15.7%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (38.2%), in the second.  São Paulo (0.2%) posted the only negative result in the index accumulated in the year, especially influenced by the sectors of transportation means (-2.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-6.7%) and fabricated metal products (-7.2%).  Among the sectors, considering the index accumulated in the year, the value of the real payroll advanced in 12 of the 18 activities surveyed, leveraged particularly by the gains coming from food and beverages (8.3%), mining and quarrying industries (15.3%) machinery and equipment (7.8%), transportation means (1.8%) and non-metallic minerals (5.1%). Footwear and leather (-3.3%), apparel (-2.6%) and wood (-5.1%) exerted the greatest negative influences on the national overall.

The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), growing 3.5% in May 2012, proceeded with the reduction in the growing pace begun in May 2011 (7.3%).
