IBGE presents its schedule of events and activities related for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20)...

IBGE presents its schedule of events and activities for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

Besides hosting the meeting of the UN Committee of Experts on Environmental-Economic Accounting (UNCEEA), the Institute will release, shortly before the Conference, two publications with essential information to discuss  sustainable development in the country: “Sustainable Development Indicators” (SDI) and “Brazil in Figures”.

IBGE will also install a Biome Map in the area Rio+20 called Biome Pavilion, allowing visitors to interact and learn more about the biomes which form the national territory.

Another interesting fact is the partnership of IBGE and the National Water Agency (ANA) in the project of a committee responsible for the elaboration of the Economic and Environmental Accounts for Water through a ministerial ordinance signed on May 30 by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management and the Ministry of the Environment.  The Water Accounts follow recommendations of the United Nations Statistical Division, in order to promote the standardized monitoring of statistical information about water, integrated to the System of National Accounts.

The Rio+20 Organizing Committee received a donation of 1,500 Smartphones used by IBGE in the 2010 Population Census. The equipment will be useful for the control of administrative activities during the conference.

Meeting of statistical agencies will discuss strategic participation of environmental accounts

IBGE will host, from June 11 to 14, the meeting of UN Committee of Experts on Environmental-Economic Accounting (UNCEEA), of the United Nations Statistical Division (UNSD).  The meeting will gather approximately 30 directors and specialists from national statistical agencies with the objective of discussing strategic aspects of the participation of environmental accounts and statistics in the work plans of these institutions.  IBGE is the representative of Brazil in this Committee.

Two publications present a panorama of national features

Two IBGE publications will bring important information into debate during Rio +20. “Sustainable Development Indicators: Brazil 2012” (IDS 2012) will continue the series which started in 2002; it presents, in this edition, 62 indicators divided into four segments:  Environmental, Social, Economic and Institutional issues. The environmental dimension refers to the use of natural resources and environment degradation, being related to preservation and conservation of the environment. The social dimension corresponds to objectives related to the satisfaction of human needs, improvement of the quality of life and social justice.

The economic dimension deals with matters related to the production and management of resources, use of energy, use and scarcity of some natural resources and their connection with the macroeconomic and financial development of the country. The institutional dimension refers to the political orientation, the capacity and the efforts made by governments and society towards the implementation of changes aimed at the effective implementation of sustainable development.

“Brazil in Figures” is a bilingual publication presenting information which summarizes  the Brazilian reality in its multiple aspects. About 600 copies will be handed in to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and distributed to authorities and members of foreign delegations which will take part in Rio+20. Besides traditional data about the national territory, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the population, prices, national accounts, aspects of agriculture, industry, commerce, services, finance, foreign trade, science and technology and basic statistics of the government, the publication brings a thematic map of environmental diversity, showing the continental biomes which form the Brazilian territory.

Biome map will allow interaction of visitors and territory through playful activities

During Rio +20, Armazém 4 do Cais do Porto 9 (Warehouse No 4 of Rio de Janeiro Port) will host the Biome Pavilion, an area under the responsibility of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. In this place, IBGE will install the Biome Map, a 10m x 10m structure formed by 100 temperate glass plates. The map background is formed by the Brazilian Continental Biomes, besides the main rivers which form an important part of the national environmental scenario. For each biome there is an illustrative and explainable map, with its main characteristics.  The map also shows the location of all the Brazilian cities, with their pricnipal routes of access and level of population density. The visitor will walk freely on the Map, in a playful interaction with the territory; furthermore, in order to provide a better notion of distance, a scale has been attached to it. This way, visitors can measure, in a comparison with the size of their feet, the distance separating several points covered on the map.
