75% of the total accommodation capacity of the metropolitan regions are concentrated in the capitals

Almost 75% of the total accommodation capacity of the metropolitan regions (RM) of capital municipalities and development integrated regions (RIDE) in Brazil, in 2011, were concentrated in the capital municipalities.   The same was true for more than 67% of the establishments and 76% of the accommodation units. That happened mainly in Fortaleza (CE), which had 76.5% of the establishments (280), 85.2% of the accommodation units (12,188) and 82.4% of the total accommodation capacity (28,987). On the other hand, Recife (PE) recorded 43.3% of the establishments (161), 48.4% of the accommodation units (7,216) and 45.6% of the total accommodation capacity (15,244). Apart from the capital municipality, the city with the widest accommodation network was Ipojuca (PE), which concentrated 25.3% of the establishments (94) settled in the metropolitan region of Recife (CE).

 

This and further information integrate the Survey of Accommodation Services (PSH) 2011- Capital Municipalities, Metropolitan Regions of Capitals and  Development Integrated Regions, which investigated 7,479 establishments in the surveyed areas. Recife, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre have the lowest indexes of establishments

 

The PSH 2011 reveals that 67.3% of the establishments, 76.4% of the accommodation units and 74.8% of the accommodation capacity are concentrated in the capital municipalities. Besides Fortaleza (CE), São Paulo comes in the second place with 73.5% of the establishments (972), 78.5% of the accommodation units (54,065) and 78.0% of the accommodation capacity (114,212), and Rio de Janeiro is in the third position, with 70.4% of the establishments (429), 81.9% of the accommodation units (31,594) and 81.2% of the total accommodation capacity (67,536).

 

Among the capitals with the lowest concentration, the highlights were Recife, with 43.3% of the establishments (161), 48.4% of the accommodation units (7,216) and 45.6% of the total accommodation capacity (15,244); Belo Horizonte (MG), with 49.4% of the establishments (291), 61.2% of the accommodation units (13,353) and 57.5% of the total accommodation capacity (27,842); and Porto Alegre (RS), with 52.5% of the establishments (190), 68.8% of the accommodation units (10,284) and 67.6% of the total accommodation capacity (21,570).

 

Four metropolitan regions concentrate 44.2% of the accommodation capacity

 

The survey also reveals that four metropolitan regions account for 40.6% of the total of establishments, 46.3% of the accommodation units and 44.2% of the accommodation capacity. The metropolitan region of São Paulo registered 1,323 establishments (17.7%), 68,858 accommodation units (21.0%) and an accommodation capacity of 146,381 guests (19.7%). Whereas the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro had 609 establishments (8.1%), 38,565 accommodation units (11.8%) and a capacity of 83,130 guests (11.2%). In the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, there were 589 establishments (7.9%), 21,809 accommodation units (11.8%) and a capacity of 48,393 guests (6.5%). The metropolitan region of Salvador concentrated 516 establishments (6.9%), 21,591 accommodation units (6.6%) and an accommodation capacity of 50,158 guests (6.8%).

 

 


 

Accommodation network can host an average of 99 guests per establishment

 

The accommodation establishments of the metropolitan regions (RMs) and development integrated regions (RIDEs) registered, in average, 44 accommodation units per establishments. The RMs of Rio de Janeiro (63), São Paulo (52) and Curitiba (45) stood above the national average. As to the average accommodation capacity per establishments, the average was of 99 guests, but the RM of Rio de Janeiro recorded an average of 137 guests per establishment. The highlights were also the RMs of São Paulo and Curitiba, with 111 and 100 guests per establishment, respectively.

 

Almost half of the accommodation establishments are hotels

 

The accommodation establishments settled in the metropolitan regions (RMs) of the capitals and  development integrated regions (RIDEs) comprise mainly hotels (46.9%), followed by motels (24.8%) and inns (20.0%). Apart hotels and flats (3.2%), boarding houses (2.7%), hostels (1.4%) and others (1.0%) are less significant. The RIDE of the Federal District and surroundings had, in 2011, the greatest proportion of hotels in its accommodation network (57.5%), followed by the RMs of Curitiba (55.9%), São Paulo (54.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (52.5%). The most intense concentration of motels is in the RMs of Porto Alegre (37.0%), Fortaleza (34.7%) and São Paulo (31.7%). Inns, however, are more common in the RMs of Florianópolis (45.7%) and in the Northeast capitals, particularly Salvador (38.4%), Recife (33.9%) and Fortaleza (28.7%).

 

Concerning categories, 12.6% of the establishments are in the luxury or superior/high comfort group, with top comfort standards. On the other hand, 87.4% of them have average and low comfort/quality services, 27.4% being considered as tourist/average comfort, 38.3% as budget and 21.7% as simple. The apart hotels and flats concentrate the largest proportion of the luxury and the superior/high categories (41.5%), followed by hotels (19.8%), which present a higher proportion of establishments in the luxury category (5.8%). The establishments with inferior comfort standards are more concentrated in boarding houses, hostels and others.

 

Even though the RM of São Paulo has the greatest number of luxury and superior/high establishments (174), the largest proportion is in the RM of Rio de Janeiro, which concentrates 18.2% of the establishments in this category. The RMs of Curitiba (17.9%), Porto Alegre (14.4%) and São Paulo (13.2%) come in the sequence.  The major proportion of establishments in the category tourist/average comfort is in the RM of Florianópolis (42.9%). Considering budget and simple establishments, the highlights were the RMs of São Paulo (68.5%) and Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte and the RIDE of the Federal District, with a contribution around 60.0%.

 

Most of the establishments have up to 19 accommodation units.

 

Concerning the establishments capacity, according to the number of accommodation units, 31.8% have up to 19 units; 22.0% between 20 and 29 units; 22.3% between 30 and 49 units; and 23.9% with 50 or more units. Among the main areas surveyed, the major proportion of establishments with 50 or more units is in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, where such establishments account for 44.3% of the accommodation network: 13.0% with 100 or more units and 31.3% with 50 to 99 units. The RMs of Curitiba, with 27.4%, and São Paulo, with 26.7% come in the sequence.  The establishments with the lowest capacity (those up to 19 accommodation units) are more concentrated in the RM of Florianópolis, with 49.8% of the establishments, and in the main RMs of the Northeast capitals, particularly Fortaleza (39.6%), Recife (39.0%) and Salvador (38.9%). The establishments categorized between 20 and 49 units are more common in the RMs of São Paulo (50.9%), Belo Horizonte (46.8%) and Curitiba (46.4%).

 

Information about 86 municipalities of touristic interest are in SIDRA

 

IBGE also surveyed data on accommodation in 86 municipalities of touristic interest, in accordance with the classification of the Ministry of Tourism. It comprises Búzios (RJ), Cabo Frio (RJ), Santos (SP), Ouro Preto (MG), Ponta Grossa (PR) and Bento Gonçalves (RS), among others.
