August 19, 2011 09h00 AM | Last Updated: September 11, 2018 05h15 PM

Among the indexes by area, the highest one was that of Brasília (0.44%), mainly due to the rise of rents (2.07%) and of fuels (1.77%). The lowest index was recorded in Recife, with decrease of 0.17% as a consequence of the lower result of food products (0.66%).

In order to calculate IPCA-15, prices were collected from July 14 to August 12 and compared to those in force from June 14 to July 13 of 2011. The indicator refers to families with a monthly income of one to forty minimum wages and encompasses the metropolitan regions of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Curitiba, and also Brasília and Goiânia. The methodology is the same as the one used for IPCA; the difference is in the period of price collection.

The Extended National Consumer Price Index-15 (IPCA-15) recorded change of 0.27% in August, and was 0.17 percentage points above the rate of July (0.10%).With this result, the index accumulated in the year was 4.48%, being above that of the same period in the previous year (3.21%). Considering the last 12 months, IPCA-15 was 7.10%, higher than in the immediately previous 12 months (6.75%). In August 2010, the rate was -0.05%.

Led by meals in restaurants, which recorded increase of 0.92% and accounted for the main individual impact on the index of the month, 0.04 percentage points, the group food products and beverages rose once again, being 0.21% in August, versus decrease of 0.39% in July. Several food products  which had faced decrease in the previous month rose in August. Some examples are beans ("carioca type", –0.73% to 1.21%), rice (from –1.29% to 0.34%) and meat (from –1.50% to 0.52%).

Other items influenced the monthly index, for example, residential rents which changed from  0.46% in July to 1.06% in August. The highlights in this case were Belo Horizonte, with 2.20% of hike in the month, and Brasília, with 2.07%. There was also significant rise of household appliances (from 0.61% to 1.27%), apparel (from 0.15% to 0.68%) and urban bus fares (from 2.97% to 4.09%).

Regarding fuels, which changed from –1.17% to 0.01%, in spite of the lower rhythm of rise of ethanol, which fell from 1.79% to 1.54%, gasoline recorded less significant fall, having changed from –1.49% to –0.17% and, as a result, affecting the monthly index.

As a result, whereas food products became, on average, 0.21% more expensive, non-food products rose 0.29%, being above the July result, 0.25%.
