Industrial output drops in 9 of the 14 places in June

Nine of the fourteen places surveyed recorded negative rates between May and June, discounted the seasonal influences, following the drop observed in the total result of the country (-1.6%). The sharpest drops were registered in Rio de Janeiro (-4.5%) and in Amazonas (-3.7%), followed by Ceará (-2.9%), Espírito Santo (-2.4%), Pará (-1.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.6%). With drops below the one observed for the national total, there were São Paulo (-1.5%), Minas Gerais (-1.3%) and Santa Catarina (-0.1%). The five areas with increases were Bahia (5.6%), Pernambuco (4.8%), Paraná (3.1%), Goiás (2.3%) and Northeast region (0.5%).

The increase of industrial activity at national level in the first six months of 2011 (1.7%) reached nine of the 14 areas surveyed, being the main highlight Espírito Santo (12.4%), the only one with a two-digit increase. Rates above the national average were reached by Goiás (3.6%), São Paulo (2.5%), Minas Gerais (2.3%), Rio de Janeiro (2.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.1%). The positive performance of these areas presents increased presence of segments related the production of capital goods (for transportation and construction) and of durable consumer goods (automobiles and mobile telephones), besides advances in the sectors of mining and quarrying (iron ore), pharmaceutical industry and metallurgy. The other positive results were recorded by Paraná (1.6%), Pará (0.9%) and Amazonas (0.3%). On the other hand, the areas that faced decrease of output in the first six months of the year were: Pernambuco (-4.2%), Santa Catarina (-4.4%), Bahia (-4.7%), Northeast Region (-5.2%) and Ceará (-10.7%).

 

The quarterly moving average index for the country fell be 0.9% between May and June, interrupting the positive evolution of this indicator, present since October last year. In terms of areas, seven of the 14 areas surveyed followed this change, being important to mention the losses which occurred in Ceará (-2.9%), Santa Catarina (-2.1%), São Paulo (-1.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.1%). The major increases occurred in Goiás (4.8%), Bahia (3.6%) and Pará (3.2%). Also considering the series with seasonal adjustment, in the index in the quarter versus the immediately previous quarter, the national industrial production decreased by 0.7% in the second quarter of 2011, after having increased by 2.0% in the first quarter of the year. In terms of areas, nine of them recorded deceleration of increase from the first to the second quarter, mainly due to the decreases observed in Santa Catarina (from 0.2% to -6.6%), Ceará (from 1.8% to -4.8%), Paraná (from 5.6% to -0.9%) and Espírito Santo (from 8.2% to 2.0%), whereas Bahia (from -5.1% to 8.4%), Goiás (from -2.7% to 9.0%) and Pará (from -5.9% to 5.4%) recorded the biggest increases  between the two periods.

 

Compared to June 2010, nine of the 14 areas surveyed recorded increase of output, being the main highlight the two-digit increase of Goiás (26.1%), mainly due to the advances in the sectors of chemical products and food products and beverages. Being above the national average (0.9%) also featured Espírito Santo (8.0%), Bahia (6.1%), Pará (4.5%), São Paulo (1.9%), Paraná and Pernambuco (both with 1.6%) and Minas Gerais (1.3%). Rio Grande do Sul, with hike of 0.7%, recorded advance in the production of the monthly index of June 2011. Ceará (-14.6%), Santa Catarina (-7.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (-3.9%) recorded the most significant decreases, whereas Amazonas (-0.2%) and the Northeast Region (-1.7%) had more moderately lower results.

 

In the analysis by quarter, it is possible to observe that the industrial sector, having grown by 0.7% in the second quarter of the year, has kept its positive results for seven consecutive months, but with clear reduction of rhythm since the 18.2% recorded in the first three months of 2010, being both comparisons relative to the same period in the previous year. At agricultural level, eight areas recorded positive rates in the comparison between the second quarter of 2011 and the same period in 2010, being the main highlight Espírito Santo (13.6%) and Goiás (8.4%) which recorded the most significant advances. The loss of dynamism observed at national level from the first (2.6%) to the second quarter of the year (0.7%) was followed by six of the 14 areas surveyed, with Santa Catarina (from 0.4% to -8.9%), Ceará (from -7.3% to -14.0%), Paraná (from 4.6% to -1.1%) and Minas Gerais (from 4.6% to 0.3%) recording the main decreases between the two periods. São Paulo, with the most varied industrial structure in the country, also followed this national trend between the first and the second semester, having changed from 3.9% to 1.1%. Goiás (from -1.5% to 8.4%) and Bahia (-9.2% to -0.2%) were the two areas presenting the most significant highlights between the first two quarters of the year.
