In 2010, the Brazilian industrial production increased in the 14 places surveyed, with five Federation Units registering highs above the national average (+10.5%)...

 

In 2010, the Brazilian industrial production increased in the 14 places surveyed, with five Federation Units registering highs above the national average (+10.5%).

The highlight was Espírito Santo (+22.3%), followed by Goiás (+17.1%), Amazonas (+16.3%), Minas Gerais (+15.0%) and Paraná (+14.2%). Another highlight was the increase of two digits for Pernambuco (+10.2%) and São Paulo (+10.1%). Their growth was near the Brazilian industry average.

 

Between November and December of 2010,the seasonally adjusted indexes recorded drops in 11 of the 14 places, with Rio de Janeiro (-5.7%), Paraná (-5.0%), Bahia (-3.9%), Goiás (-3.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-3.0%) registering the most significant decreases. They were followed by Espírito Santo (-1.9%), Ceará (-1.6%), São Paulo (-1.2%), Pernambuco (-1.2%), Northeast region (-0.7%), which repeated the national result, and Amazonas (-0.4%).

Conversely, the three places with highs were Santa Catarina (+3.0%), Minas Gerais (+2.0%) and Pará (+0.8%).

 

 

 

In the comparison between December of 2010 and the same month a year ago, the indexes were positive in 10 of the 14 places surveyed. The highlights were Pará (+13.5%) and Goiás (+10.3%), which recorded two-digit rates. Amazonas (+8.7%), Minas Gerais (+6.5%) and Santa Catarina (+5.2%) also rose above the national average (+2.7%), followed by Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo (both with +1.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (+0.7%), Paraná and Pernambuco (both with +0.2%). Conversely, downs were registered for Espírito Santo (-0.8%), Northeast Region (-5.5%), Ceará (-9.7%) and Bahia (-10.8%).

 

Regional highlights followed the growth pattern of the overall industry

 

In the highlight regions in 2010, the growth pattern was similar to the one observed in the overall Brazilian industry. There was a strong presence of the manufacturing sectors of capital goods and durable consumer goods, mainly automobiles and "brown-line" house appliances, as well as typically exporting sectors, specially the one related to commodities.

 

Compared with the last quarter of 2009, highs in 11 of the 14 places

 

In the comparison between the last quarter of 2010 and the same period of 2009, the results were positive in 11 of the 14 places. The highlights were Goiás (+15.0%) and Pará (+11.5%), sustained respectively by the production of food and beverages and by the extraction of iron ores.

Conversely, only Northeast Region (-1.6%), Bahia (-2.8%) and Ceará (-5.9%) recorded negative rates.

 

Between the third and the fourth quarters of 2010, following the national result (deceleration from +8.0% to +3.3%), 12 places registered a reduction in the industrial pace, all comparisons against the same period a year ago. Such movement was more relevant in Ceará (from +11.4% to –5.9%), Paraná (from +16.1% to +3.5%), Northeast Region (from +8.4% to –1.6%), Espírito Santo (from +16.6% to 6.6%) and Bahia (from +5.8% to –2.8%). Conversely, only Pará (from +8.2% to +11.5%) and Goiás (from +12.8% to +15.0%) displayed an increase in the pace betweeen both periods.
