The technological innovations used in the 2010 Census, the first total digital census in the world, granted IBGE a position among the 10 award winners announced by UNESCO and Netexplorateur, French NGO, for the development of the digital society.

The president of the Institute, Eduardo Pereira Nunes, and the coordinator of the 2010 Census Technology, José Sant’Anna Bevilaqua, will be in Paris next February 3 and 4 to receive the prize "Netexplorateur Palmares 100" and to present the case of success.

In December, the director of the Informatics of IBGE, Paulo César Moraes Simões, received the prize "Professional of Information Technology 2010", from the site Today Informatics, for his leadership in the area in the 2010 Census.

Netexplorateur (

www.netexplorateur.org) is an observatory for the dissemination of new uses of Internet in the whole world. Every year, it lists the 100 most promising innovations and rewards the 10 most important ones, in the "Netexplorateur Palmares 100".

According to the organizers , " in 2010 IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) conducted a complete census of the Brazilian population to determine the place, size and habits of each family, that is, almost 200 million residents. The extensive use of mobile technology in the survey made it the first totally digital operation in large scale (...). The paperless operation also promoted economic and environmental benefits".

In addition to the award ceremony, possible socioeconomic impacts of the 10 award-winner innovations will be presented in a forum. The purpose is to help participants – public policy makers, scholars and media and business representatives – understand how digital culture will transform their universes, businesses and working methods, preparing them for new practices and management models.

Second award in one month

In December, the director of the Informatics of IBGE, Paulo César Moraes Simões, won the 11^th edition of the Prize "Professional of Information Technology 2010", in the "Government" category, promoted by the site Today Informatics (http://www.informaticahoje.com.br), for his leadership in the area in the 2010 Census.

In the first phase of the award process, Simões was chosen by a committee with more than 500 personalities of the Information Technology (IT) sector - executives, businesspeople, consultants and scholars.

They nominated 50 professionals in ten sectors to be voted by site members – who defined the final list of 10 winners.
