The Image Map of the Federal District, which IBGE makes available today at ftp://geoftp.ibge.gov.br, will enable users to access the main geographic names, streets and roads, besides district limits of DF. Produced to celebrate Brasília’s 50th anniversary, it is the first cartogram made from color images of the Alos satellite. Other nine states will be mapped through the same process, which has already been used to update maps of census collection in the whole country.

Produced on a scale of 1:100,000 (each 1 cm represents 1 km of real area), the cartogram is made of six integrated images, which will enable users to manipulate and visualize, in one image, the whole area of the Federal District, expanding the capacity of analysis and serving as the basis for policies of sustainable development.

This is because it is made of orthoimages, a process that corrects imperfections and produces more accurate measures, presenting a wealth of detail that makes it possible to be used to plan soil use and occupation, as it is possible to identify urban and rural areas, forest, plantations, etc.

The release will be out today, at 11 a.m., at the Ministry of Planning (block K, basement auditorium), at the Ministries Esplanade, in Brasília.
