The Extended Consumer Price Index-15 (IPCA-15) changed 0.86% in November, above the result of October (0.62%). The accumulated index of the year was at 5.07%, above the index of the same period in 2009 (3.79%). Considering the last 12 months (5.47%), the rate was also higher than in the immediately previous 12 months (5.03%). In November of 2009, the IPCA-15 was at 0.44%.

The highest result of IPCA-15, which changed from 0.62% in October to 0.86% in November, continued linked to the group food products and beverages, whose rise was even sharper, reaching 2.11% in November, whereas it had already reached 1.70% in the previous month.

Consumers began to pay, on average, 6.10% higher for one kilogram of meat, an item that remained ahead of the major impacts, with 0.14 percentage point of the November IPCA-15. In relation to December of last year, in 2010, meat prices rose 20.49%.

Other food products also had rises. Carioca beans, for example, increased 10.83% in the month and more than doubled prices in the year (105.48%). Substantial rises were recorded, in November, in prices of crystallized sugar (14.05%), tomatoes (10.28%), potatoes (9.96%), black beans (7.15%), wheat flour (5.76%) and refined sugar (4.50%), among other important food items in family budgets.

As a whole, the group food products and beverages made a 0.48 percentage point contribution in the month, being responsible for 56% of the November IPCA-15 result.

Besides food products, fuels stood out, with a 2.22% rise. The liter of ethanol became 6.75% more expensive in the average of the surveyed areas, with effects on gasoline, which increased 1.92% and became the second major impact of the month, responsible for a 0.08 percentage point contribution.

Besides fuels, the highlights are rises in expenses with domestic workers (1.34%), apparel (1.17%), residential rent (1.05%) and condominium (0.88%), taking the group non-food products from a variation of 0.30% in October to 0.49% in November.

The next table shows IPCA-15 results by group of products and services.

For the calculation of IPCA-15, prices collected from October14 to November 12 were compared to those in effect from September 14 to October 13, 2010. The indicator refers to families with monthly income ranging from one to 40 minimum wages and encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, besides Brasília and Goiânia. The methodology is the same as that used for IPCA; the difference lies in the price collection period.

Among regional indexes, the highest was presented by the metropolitan area of Salvador (1.45%), emphasizing the strong rises of 24.72% in prices of ethanol and 14.27% in gasoline. The lowest index was that of the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre (0.58%). The table below presents result by area.
