Between June and July, seven of the 14 surveyed locations presented positive seasonally adjusted rates. The largest increase was registered in Goiás (10.3%),which practically recovered the 10.7% loss, observed in the previous month. Bahia (3.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.3%), Northeast region (1.7%), Rio de Janeiro (1.1%) and São Paulo (0.5%) were the group that grew over the national average (0.4%). Minas Gerais (0.1%) and Espírito Santo (-0.2%) practically repeated the rates of last June. The negative results in the period were registered by: Pará (-0.7%), Pernambuco (-1.2%), Amazonas (-1.3%), Ceará (-1.5%), Paraná and Santa Catarina (both with a contraction of 2.9%).

Comparing July 2010/July 2009, the indices were predominantly positive, with all places registering advance in production, except for Santa Catarina, which presented a negative change of 0.1%. It is worth mentioning that July of 2010 (22) presented one working day less than July of 2009 (23). The highest positive rate was registered in Espírito Santo (24.7%), followed by Paraná (18.1%), Amazonas (16.4%), Bahia (14.4%), Northeast region (14.3%), Ceará (13.4%), Pernambuco (13.3%) and Minas Gerais (11.2%), all of them expanded two digits. Goiás, with a growth of 8.8%, was also over the national average (8.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.6%), Rio de Janeiro (8.0%), São Paulo (7.9%) and Pará (3,9%) registered the remaining positive rates.

The accumulated indicator in the period of January-July of 2010 also presented an upward trend, with all places registering positive indices. Espírito Santo (34.9%), Amazonas (26.4%) and Minas Gerais (20.5%) registered the highest rates in this type of comparison, propelled in great part by the advances in the mining and quarrying industry (iron ores), in the manufacturing sector of durable goods (televisions, cellular phones, microwave ovens and motorcycles) and

manufacture of primary iron and steel (ferro-niobium and steel plates, rods, blocks or ingots). Also presenting an expansion of two digits and over the national average (15.0%) were the following places: Paraná (19.3%), Goiás (18.9%), Pernambuco (17.3%) and Ceará (16.5%). The remaining positive results were observed in São Paulo and in the Northeast region (both with 14.1%), Bahia (13.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (10.8%), Rio de Janeiro (10.4%), Santa Catarina (10.3%) and Pará (8.1%). By the positive performance of these places, it is possible to observe the highest dynamism of the manufacturing sectors of capital and consumption durable goods, as well as the gradual recovery of exports.

Comparing the accumulated performance of the first semester of the year with the monthly index of July, both in contrast with the same period of the previous year, there was a reduction of the industrial activity growth pace in great part (12) of the 14 surveyed places, accompanying the movement of the national index, in which the sector changed from 16.2% in the first semester of the year to 8.7% in July. It is important to highlight that this movement reflects not only a more moderate behavior of the industrial activity in the last months, but also the increase of the comparison basis, since the second semester of 2009 presented a more intense pace than the first one. In this type of comparison, Santa Catarina (from 12.3% to -01%), Goiás (from 21.0% to 88%), Espírito Santo (from 36.9% to 24.7%), Amazonas (from 28.2% to 16.4%) and Minas Gerais (from 22.4% to 11.2%) registered the highest pace reductions between both periods.
